Sergio's POV

The sword was still in my hand, and I did not remember picking it up.

I remembered Clara's kitchen knife.

I remembered the weight of it in my palm and the worn leather hilt and the cold of the blade when I first took it from her hands in the alcove. I did not remember the sword.

It was longer than the knife, and heavier, and there was blood on the hilt that had dried into the leather wrap and gone dark.

I was standing in the north gate corridor, and the rebel wave was broken.

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   chapter 116: The hunt begins

Dario's POVI had chased men through the frozen waste before, and I had never once brought one back alive. But I intended to bring this one back alive even if it killed me.The north gate corridor was full of prisoners and wounded and survivors moving between them, and I stood at the center of it with my sword still in my hand and my cheek still bleeding from the rebel who had caught me with the flat of his blade in the last push. The blood had dried at the edge of my jaw and pulled at the skin when I spoke, and I did not wipe it away. The corridor smelled of smoke and blood and wet wool, and the stones under my boots were slick with things I did not want to look at.My second, Esteban, crossed to me, and I did not turn my head."Report," I ordered."Three rebels kneeling against the wall, Capitán," Esteban replied, and he wiped snow off his brow with the back of his wrist. "Nineteen wounded in the corridor, four dead, and the gate is still holding.""Hold it," I told him, "and if the

Sergio's POV I shook my head. Then I looked at my hands in his hands. My hands were covered in blood, and his hands were too, and there was no way to tell whose was whose."I keep thinking about his face," I told him. "I keep thinking about how young he was. And then I think about the one in the alcove, and I cannot remember his face at all, and that frightens me more than the first one.""You are still here," Leandro said again, and his voice was quiet. "Say it back to me.""I am still here," I told him, and I did not believe it."The rebel in the alcove," I said. "I went into his throat. I felt it go in. I do not know if he had a family.""He was going to kill Clara," Leandro told me.I nodded. "I know.""You saved Mateo's mother." Leandro said, still trying to comfort me.I nodded again. "I know that too."I held my hands up between us. They were still shaking, and the candle flame jumped every time they moved."They have not stopped," I told him, and my voice cracked. "I have tri

Sergio's POV The sword was still in my hand, and I did not remember picking it up. Three rebels knelt against the wall with their hands on their heads. The corridor was full of the wounded and the dead and the courtyard survivors moving between them. Dario crossed to me. His cheek was still bleeding, and he did not wipe it away. "Go back to the great hall," Capitán Dario ordered, and his voice was flat and steady. "The prisoners and the wounded are mine to handle. The king needs you." "The east tower is still smoking," I told him. "I know," Dario replied. "I am sending fo

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   chapter 113: The tide turns

Sergio's POVI heard Dario's voice before I saw him, and I had never been so glad to hear anyone shout in my life. The scream was still echoing in the corridor when the noble came running back from the great hall.He was out of breath, and there was blood on his hands that was not his own, and he nearly went down on the stone before he caught himself on the wall."What happened?" I asked, and I did not leave the junction."A servant, my lord," the noble gasped, and he pressed a hand to his chest to steady himself. "The scream was a servant. She saw the runner come through the doors.""And the runner?" I asked."Dead," the noble answered. "Doña Clara killed him. She put a kitchen knife into his throat before he took three steps into the alcove."I closed my eyes for one breath. I opened them again."Go back," I ordered. "Tell Clara to hold the doors. Tell her I am still at the junction. Tell her not to move from the alcove until I come for her."The noble nodded and ran.The thin man w

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   chapter 112: The fall of the rebels

Sergio's POV The two royal guards were still there with the nobles, and the thin man with the white beard was standing over a dead rebel with his sword in both hands and his chest heaving."Report," I ordered, and I stopped beside him with my knife still out."The first wave is finished, my lord," the thin man answered, and he did not look up from the body."Fourteen rebels dead in the corridor. Two of ours wounded. The gate guards are holding.""Any movement beyond the junction?" I asked."Not yet," the thin man replied."They will regroup," I told him, and I looked down the corridor. "They always regroup. Count the timing. Four breaths on, six breaths off. Do not break the line.""How do you know the timing, my lord?" the thin man asked."Because I have been counting since the first wave," I told him. "Four on, six off. It has not changed once."The thin man looked at me for a moment, and then he nodded."Yes, my lord," the thin man said. His hand had not stopped shaking since I ca

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   chapter 111: The flanking manouver

Sergio's POV The runner and I saw each other through the narrow opening at the same moment, and neither of us had anywhere to go but toward the other. The passage was barely wide enough for one man, and neither of us could step around the other. There was no room to swing and no room to run, and whatever happened between us was going to happen at the length of an arm.He was young. Younger than me. Thin across the shoulders, with the kind of face that had not finished growing into itself yet, and there was blood on his jaw that was not his own.He had a short blade in his right hand, and he held it low, the way a man holds a blade when he has used it before but not for very long. The torchlight from the corridor behind me threw my shadow down the passage toward him.His shadow stood still on the wall behind him. The air in the passage was cold, and it smelled of wet stone and old smoke, and every breath I took tasted like ash.Neither of us spoke. Neither of us moved.'One knife,' I

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   Chapter 2: The king

I had expected a monster, the kind of monster that lived in the stories my mother used to tell me before bed, with sharp teeth and claws and eyes that glowed in the dark, but when the doors of the throne room opened and Lycan king Leandro walked in, I realized that I had been wrong about everything

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   Chapter 1: The Chains

The snow burned my knees through the holes in my trousers, and I had been kneeling for what felt like hours, though time moved differently when you were waiting to die, and I had been waiting to die for as long as I could remember. The chains bit into my wrists, the metal so cold that it felt like

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   Chapter 6: The Servant

I woke the morning after my meeting with Ramiro, and the first thing I saw was the tray of food on the table, still untouched from the day before. The fire had burned low while I slept, and the room was cold enough that I could see my own breath hanging in the air. My back ached from pressing again

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   Chapter 23: The Warning

Sergio's POVThe morning after Leandro stayed in my room, I woke to find him gone. The space beside me was still warm, and the indent of his body was still pressed into the mattress, and I could smell him on the pillows, like snow and smoke and something wild that I was starting to recognize. I la
