Chapter 2

Author: Vesper Shaw
The Falcone Estate had been transformed for the annual gathering of the five mafia families.

A massive iron arch stood at the entrance of the main courtyard, wrapped in white roses and ivy, with the Falcone family’s crest—a coiled serpent—worked into the metalwork.

Dozens of guests had already arrived. Men in tailored suits, women in silk and diamonds. All of them, made men and their families from five families.

The moment my heels touched the ground, the conversation died.

Every single pair of eyes turned to me. Not with curiosity. With pity.

I walked through the arch and immediately understood why.

In the far corner of the courtyard, under a trellis draped with fairy lights, lay a body covered with a white sheet.

I stopped dead. For a second, I forgot to breathe.

Then Lilian glided through the crowd toward me. She wore a crimson dress that matched her nails, her smile as sharp as a blade.

She said apologetically, "Gianna, I'm so sorry. I only meant to teach your mother a hard lesson with a few slaps. I had no idea she was that fragile. She was scared to death. You're not going to blame me for that, are you?"

I was stunned. My heart slammed against my ribs.

She still thought the body under that sheet was my mother.

I glared at her. "How could you be so cruel?"

She flinched and stepped back, like she was scared of me.

The next second, Anthony stepped in front of Lilian like a human shield. He moved with the easy confidence of a man who had never been challenged in his life, his tailored suit hugging broad shoulders.

"Lilian, you okay?" he asked softly.

Lilian's lower lip trembled. "I'm so sorry, Don Falcone. I never meant to ruin your gathering. I just… I saw her sneaking through the estate, and I thought…"

He pulled her into his arms. "I know. This isn't your fault. You protected my property. You did your job."

Then he wheeled toward me. Every trace of tenderness evaporated.

"Gianna, take a look at what your mother has caused. Trespassing on my grounds. Alarming our guests. Turning this gathering into a three-ring circus." His eyes narrowed to slits. "You ought to be relieved I'm not asking for compensation."

I stared at him.

He was my fiancé, the one who was meant to be my husband.

Yet, he just defended a woman who had beaten someone to death.

"Anthony," I said quietly, "I think you should look at the body."

He scoffed, contempt dripping from his voice. "And why would I do that? So I can gaze upon your mother's face one final time and feel sorry for you? Don't flatter yourself. I'm not about to let some decrepit old woman spoil my appetite."

A polished voice interjected from behind him. Daisy Falcone—Anthony's sister—approached at a leisurely pace, her designer heels clicking against the stone.

"Anthony, why waste your breath on Gianna at all? This whole mess is her mother's fault for trying to pilfer things." She folded her arms. "If Father hadn't insisted on this marriage alliance before his death, given your standing now, you could have selected a partner with genuine integrity. Not the daughter of a thief who can't even control her own mother."

She cast a dismissive glance at the shrouded corpse. "Honestly, this thief's demise might be a blessing. Saves the rest of us from being robbed next."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the surrounding guests.

"Daisy's got a point. A mother-in-law like that would be nothing but a leech."

"What if she'd stolen from another family and they traced it back to us? That would be mortifying."

"Why didn't Gianna keep her mother under lock and key? Lilian did everyone a favor. Problem dealt with."

Lilian peeked out from Anthony's embrace, her eyes glistening with manufactured tears. "But Gianna looks so furious. What if she comes after me for revenge? What if she hurts me?"

"Don't worry." Anthony drew her even closer. "As long as I'm breathing, nobody will lay a hand on you."

He reached into his jacket and withdrew his wallet, pulling out a crisp hundred-dollar bill. He extended it toward me the way one might toss a scrap to a stray mutt.

"Here," he said flatly. "Go buy yourself a drink. Or whatever helps you move past this."

I stared at the note.

The insult struck me like ice water.

He was buying me off. Brushing me aside. Reducing his own mother's death to pocket change.

Anthony pressed on, "Your mother's death was an accident. She brought it upon herself. I'm willing to overlook her attempted theft. But you will take this money, and you will walk away. You will never seek retaliation against Lilian."

He checked his wristwatch. "You've got five minutes. My mother is en route, and I refuse to let her stumble into this mess."

The driver's words landed like a stone dropped into still water. For a moment, no one moved. The courtyard seemed to hold its breath.Anthony crushed the phone in his grip and took off toward his mother's private quarters without a word. We followed.Inside, a suitcase lay open on the floor, its contents strewn about as if someone had ransacked it in a hurry.Clothes, toiletries, and more than a dozen neatly wrapped gifts were scattered across the tiles.Lilian pushed her way to the front. The second she spotted the luggage, her face lit up like she'd just won a prize. She jabbed a finger at it. "I've seen that suitcase before! That filthy middle-aged woman was carrying it!"I held her gaze, my voice calm. "Are you sure about that? That suitcase belonged to the person you said you 'disciplined'?"Certain she'd cornered me in a lie, Lilian grabbed Anthony's arm and gave it a triumphant shake. "See? I told you she was here to steal! The suitcase isn't even properly packed. She got caught

At my words, Daisy's face darkened.Behind her, the stretcher sat abandoned in the corner of the courtyard, the white sheet still draped over the still form beneath it. Nobody dared look at it.Anthony's gaze locked onto mine, sharp and unyielding. "Gianna, enough."He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, as if steadying himself, then let out a slow, controlled breath. When he spoke again, his voice was quiet but final. "If you want to call off the engagement, fine. But tonight, you will see the gathering through. The moment it ends, we're done. I promise."Lilian's eyes gleamed with quiet victory. Still, she hurried over, placing herself between us like a mediator."Ms. Vitale, please think this through. Your engagement involves both families and it's very important. Maybe you should wait for Don Falcone's mother returns. If there's been any misunderstanding, we can clear it up after the guests leave. And if you don’t want to see me, I'll leave…"I caught her wrist before she could tu

Pushing people around? I nearly choked on the words.Did my ears just betray me, or did Anthony actually have the nerve to say that?Wasn't it his secretary—the sweet, innocent Lilian standing there with tear-streaked cheeks—who had beaten a middle-aged woman to death? And now I was the one being accused of bullying?A cold laugh escaped my throat.I lifted my chin slowly, letting my gaze travel across every single face in the Falcone family. Then I spoke, my voice flat and even. "Fine. If that's how it's going to be, then summon the dons from all five families. Bring them here. Right now."Anthony's forehead creased into a deep frown. "Why would I drag the other dons into this? This is a family matter, Gianna. It stays within these walls."I met his stare without flinching. "You're all convinced that woman under that sheet is someone from my family who snuck in. You won't believe a single word I say. So be it. Call the dons. Let them inspect the body. We'll wait for them to announce w

Anthony's eyes widened in shock as a realization dawned on him. "So… the deceased woman isn't Gianna's mother."The instant he uttered those words, the already taut silence in the courtyard grew even heavier. My mother stared at him, evidently baffled by the unexpected remark. Her brow knitted deeper."Anthony, what on earth is the matter with you today? I'm standing right here. Who is the deceased woman you're talking about?"Once she finished, she looked at Anthony, then turned to Lilian, whose face had gone pale as paper. Finally, she fixed her gaze on me. "Gianna, would you please tell me what's going on?"Daisy pulled herself together first. She stepped right in front of my mother and gave her a look that dripped with contempt."Okay, fine, so you're Gianna's mother. But who's gonna prove you didn't worm your way in earlier? Because plenty of people spotted you sneaking through the east wing."My mother's face flickered with surprise for just a second. "That's impossible. This aft

Anthony's face had drained to a pasty white, but in the commotion, nobody noticed—every pair of eyes was locked on my mother. For a moment, the crowd went still. Then the whispers started, low and sharp."Who the hell invited her? She's late and she's not even dressed for the occasion.""Look at her—strutting in like she owns the place. Probably some low-rent social climber looking for a free drink.""Security here is a joke. They let any stray mutt wander in these days."Lilian hastily wiped away the tears she'd been using to garner sympathy and marched forward. She planted herself directly between Anthony and my mother, her voice laced with barely concealed contempt."Hey, you." Her voice cut through the air like broken glass. "Who do you think you are, waltzing in here like you're somebody? Don't you dare show your face again unless you've got a death wish."She snapped her fingers at the nearest guards. "Get this wretch out of here! She's probably here to steal the silverware."She

I eyed the hundred-dollar bill and left it untouched."If anyone here is in need of a payoff," I said evenly, "it certainly isn't me."Anthony's jaw tensed immediately. He took it as a deliberate jab at Lilian."Gianna, don't test my patience. Your mother was worthless—no influence, no intelligence, no value to this world." He curled his lip. "Lilian still has her whole life ahead of her. Are you truly going to destroy her future over a corpse?"Daisy bobbed her head in vigorous agreement. "Exactly. Your mother was just a nobody. Wait, are you trying to extort money from us using her death? That’s cruel. I clearly misjudged you."Lilian resumed her weeping. "Don Falcone, this is all my fault. Maybe I ought to resign if that would help Ms. Vitale feel better…""You're not resigning." Anthony pulled Lilian behind him protectively and fixed me with an icy glare. "Gianna, I'm asking you one final time. Are you taking the money or not?"I listened in silence until they finished, then shook
