Marco started to follow, then pressed his hand back against the padding. Evelyn made room for the nurse beside the child.

“Marco, I need you to move for a moment too. We need to get equipment in here.”

Once he had secured the panel and moved aside, the equipment came in. Dane stood in the doorway, looking at the boy under the bed. A bare foot protruded from the curled-up body, dragging weakly across the floor.

Then the boy's head dropped.

“Leo.”

Something changed in Evelyn's voice. His chest was barely moving.

Dane crossed the threshold. As Evelyn positioned herself at the boy's head, the nurse connected the monitor. The doctor came in after them with equipment to support his breathing.

“Contact the hospital. He needs to be transferred.”

At Evelyn's words, the doctor looked at Dane.

“His guardian said he wasn't to be taken off the island—”

“We can't wait here any longer.”

Dane withdrew the arms he had reached out to lift him. Evelyn and the nurse took their places at the boy's head. Behind the medical staff, all he could see were Leo's bare feet.

“Why is he...”

Dane called to him again. His lips had changed color further. Leo couldn't turn his head.

Dane's knees hit the floor.

“Save him. Evelyn Hart. Please. This child, at least.”

Evelyn barely looked at his face.

“We need to support his breathing and get him to a hospital. Can a boat leave now?”

Dane sent away the man who wanted to put more guards aboard and ordered a boat cleared for the transfer team first. Meanwhile, Evelyn and the doctor helped the boy breathe. They adjusted the poorly fitting mask, and his small chest rose.

Word came that the hospital would accept him. The nurse gathered the remaining medication and the times of the doses. Dane called to the doctor following them.

“They'll ask who gave him what. You're coming too.”

The stretcher caught on the threshold. Dane crouched by the wheels. It was something he could do without pushing aside the people at the boy's side. As he lifted the wheels over, Evelyn and the nurse watched for the next breath. For a moment, Leo's chest seemed to stop.

He coughed.

A short, choking sound.

Dane looked up. Leo's chest rose again. Only after watching the next breath did Evelyn nod to the nurse.

“I'll keep monitoring him. Get ready to leave.”

Marco braced a hand against the wall. Dane could only watch the boy draw another breath. Evelyn had to call his name twice before he turned.

“You're his guardian. You're coming with him, aren't you?”

“I am.”

“Then leave your weapon here.”

His gaze dropped to the inside of his jacket. Following that look, a guard at the door held out a hand. At a sound from the boy, Evelyn turned back to the stretcher.

Leo had opened his eyes. He tried to push away the mask near his face, then caught Evelyn's sleeve. His small fingers pulled at the fabric.

“It's helping you breathe. And I'm right here.”

When Evelyn showed him her hand, he looked at it for a moment. But the sound of dress shoes by the door made him clutch her arm.

Pain drove through her.

Leo had bitten the inside of her left forearm. Evelyn started to pull away on instinct, then held still. The nurse came closer.

Dane reached for the boy.

“Don't pull!”

Evelyn's voice cracked. The nurse helped keep them both from further injury, and the boy let go. Blood beaded on her arm.

Crying, Leo clung to her coat. Evelyn told him he could come closer and lowered herself. He leaned into her first. The nurse stayed beside them, watching his breathing.

Dane's hand remained suspended in the air. They had both been bitten by the same child, yet he couldn't move closer, while she was supporting him.

Evelyn shifted the way she held her aching arm. She had no smile to spare. Instead, she stayed where the boy could see her face.

“I'll stay right here for now.”

After a while, his grip loosened. Evelyn laid him on the stretcher and let the nurse take over. Only after pressing gauze to her wound did she come over to Dane.

“Give me my phone.”

Dane looked at her bloodied arm.

“Get that treated first.”

“That's what I intend to do. And on the way to the hospital, I'm telling someone where I am.”

Marco took out the phone, then hesitated in front of his boss. Evelyn held out her hand, keeping the gauze pressed to her arm.

“I'm telling someone my location, and I'm getting medical attention too. Give it to me.”

Dane took the phone from Marco and handed it to her. Evelyn turned on the screen at once.

There were several missed calls from Olivia. As Evelyn tapped her name, Dane asked,

“Are you going to tell her about me too?”

“Yes. Starting with the man who ordered them to take me.”

“Dane Blackwell. That's the name of the man who ordered them to take me.”

The other end of the line went quiet.

Evelyn watched Dane as she spoke. He didn't reach for her. But the moment she said his name, every trace of expression left his face.

Picking up his coat, Dane told Marco to secure the entrance where they would meet the medical staff first. He didn't tell him to put more guards on his boat. Evelyn remembered the instructions from his recent follow-up.“If anything physical needs doing there, leave it to someone else.”“Marco and I have divided it up. My job is to get the door opened.”While he checked inside his coat, Evelyn took his arm. Hearing that he'd divided the work hadn't eased her worry. Instead of pulling his coat away, he turned toward her.Dane pressed a deep, warm kiss to the forehead of the woman holding his hand.“I'm going to the mainland. I'll confirm when I can return and call you.”Evelyn didn't release his coat. She was glad he hadn't promised an impossibly short time, but that made her more anxious too.“Come back alive. Dane, that's not a request.”

Dane didn't take out his phone as he watched her. Only when Evelyn smiled first did his arms tighten. From the far side of the greenhouse came the sound of Leo's spade digging in the soil. Evelyn looked over Dane's shoulder toward the boy. When Leo lowered his head to his own game, she turned back to Dane too.As the wind strengthened, Evelyn went to close the vent. Instead of reaching ahead of her, Dane supported the handle she was working. The bottom wouldn't shut properly, and they pressed close together to push.“Do you stick this close every time you're working?”“Didn't realize I was working right now.”He answered from right behind her. Evelyn released the handle and turned. The frame behind her left no room to retreat, but the space beside her was clear. Instead of stepping out through the opening he'd left, she picked a small leaf from his coat collar.“Don't say you wan

“It's good news.”Even after saying it, she couldn't smile. She remembered the family's shoes as they waited in the corridor for an explanation. The question the child had asked her to pass on to his dad before surgery—she still hadn't spoken it in front of his father.“They'll have gone back to the same house today too.”Evelyn's breath broke. Dane came closer. She started to hide her face, then caught his shirt instead. As she bent forward, she lost her balance. Dane reached around her waist and back. When her weight fell against him, he moved a foot back and braced himself to keep them both from sinking to the ground. His shirt smelled of soap. Unable to raise her face, Evelyn held his collar.Supporting her weight, Dane moved toward the bench. Evelyn sat with him without lifting her head. Her wet cheek pressed against his shirt.“Dane... I... the child...”She couldn't continue. Dane rested a hand against the back of her head, then lowered it to her back when she shook her head.E

On the day the meeting ended, Evelyn went to her accommodation on the mainland. Only after unpacking did she tell Dane she'd arrived. He acknowledged it but didn't add his usual question about food. The next day, the hospital explained the surgical course she would be reviewing.Further questions came, and she wrote out the stages she remembered again. She also arranged to give a statement to the investigators. Submitting material that challenged the foundation's allegations hadn't ended every process at once.Adrian maintained that there had been nothing wrong with the record changes. He no longer said Evelyn had left the scene after surgery. Instead, he said their accounts of the decisions at the time differed. While the wording shifted little by little, no one apologized first. The foundation amended part of its official statement. It withdrew the explanation that had given the impression Evelyn had fled with 300 million Westmere marks in research funds and announced that the accou

After speaking, Evelyn let out a long breath. She worried she might have raised her voice, but she didn't apologize again. The external reviewer organized the points that needed checking. Missing records. Conflicting times. How the order had been passed on. Papers that had tried to close a child's death quickly under one person's name opened again into several questions.Chairman Richard Cross, sitting at the back of the conference room, asked to speak. They mustn't prolong the family's suffering, he said. Evelyn bit her lip, knowing how true that was. Words supposedly for the family were being used to mean they should stop looking at the records. The bereaved family's representative asked,“Then why didn't you provide the originals the family requested?”The chairman replied that the scope of disclosure had needed review. The representative read the date of the family's request. Before Evelyn had been removed from duty. Only today did she fully learn that the family had been waiting

After Evelyn went back inside, Dane continued the call. The other man now wanted to reconcile all the dates together. Dane asked why the answer he'd sent earlier had changed. From the next room came the sound of her name. Evelyn pressed her headphones more firmly into place. She couldn't wait for him to make room for her. She had to answer the allegation that the medication order had been hers. On-screen, Adrian Cross was preparing to begin with his own account again. Evelyn wrote down a time she remembered differently within that sequence. This time, before he could speak, she requested a turn to ask her question.9:45 a.m.As the meeting resumed, the moderator put newly received material on-screen. An edit history the IT staff member who had received the preservation request had secured separately.Adrian looked at the legal department employee. The employee read the filename as though seeing it for the first time too. Evelyn pressed her hands together harder in her lap.“There are
