Daphne’s hand pressed against Suzi’s back, urging her forward. Suzi hesitated at the threshold, her throat dry.

Landon didn’t even glance at Daphne. His eyes pinned Suzi the instant she entered. “Sit.”

The single word held no room for refusal. She obeyed, sinking into the chair across from him, her knees tucked close, fingers twisting together.

He leaned forward, arms braced on the desk, his face carved from stone. “Ricci will be at a party tomorrow night. A gala. Too many people, too many eyes. That’s where we’ll move.”

Her heart stuttered. She nodded, unsure if it was permission to breathe.

“You want to help?” His tone was clipped, dangerous. “Then you’ll do it my way. You’ll listen to every word I give you. No improvising. No heroics. One slip, and you don’t just kill yourself, you kill us.”

“Yes,” she whispered.

His gaze sharpened. “Louder.”

“Yes.” The word came out steadier this time.

“Good,” he said.

“Once you find him, you approach him,” Landon said. “Act naïve. Shy. Wounded. H

  • The Mafia Boss's Pregnant Bride   334. Do It Again

Suzi slipped back into their bedroom. The curtains were drawn halfway, spilling a weak gray light across the bed. Max lay there unmoving, his body broad and strong but unnervingly still. His chest rose and fell only because the machines said it must.Suzi stood for a moment, her hands clasped in front of her, afraid to cross the room. Afraid to see him up close like this.Max was never still. He filled every space he walked into. He spoke and people listened. He laughed and it shook through everyone around him. To see him silent, weak, laid low, it felt wrong, like the world had turned inside out. Finally, she made herself move. She sat on the edge of the bed, barely letting her weight sink into the mattress. Her hand hovered over his before she dared to touch. His skin was too cold. She rubbed her thumb across his knuckles anyway, trying to give warmth back to him.“You would be so mad at me right now,” she whispered. Her voice cracked on the words, but she pushed them out. “I know y

Landon guided Suzi inside Antonio’s study and closed the door. Antonio stood behind the desk, hands flat on the blotter. He did not sit. His eyes traveled from Landon’s face to the dried glitter of glass in Suzi’s hair, then down to the red mark on her wrist.“What did I say about the wives putting themselves in grave danger?” His voice was even, but the anger in it was a blade.Suzi flinched before she could stop herself. “I wanted to help,” she said. “Max would want me to.”Antonio’s mouth tightened. “Max would want you alive.”Landon stepped in. “It was my call. I set the perimeter. We had men inside and out.”Antonio’s gaze cut to him. “And still Ricci laid hands on her.”Landon took the hit without a word. The room was still. The fire cracked once, then quieted again.Antonio looked back at Suzi. The anger in his eyes did not dim, but something else moved under it. It sounded like regret when he spoke next. “You should not have been there. You should never be near that man.”Suzi

“I think I am going to take you instead.”The words crawled under her skin like ice. Before she could process it, the club’s velvet hush shattered. The door burst open, slamming against the wall, and men in black poured through.Ricci’s hand jerked, and Suzi was yanked hard off the seat. He shoved her down behind the low couch, his voice slicing through the chaos.“Stay put, little bird,” he sneered.Gunfire cracked a heartbeat later. Loud, sharp, deafening. The chandelier above exploded, raining shards across the velvet booths. Suzi gasped, curling into herself as glittering glass rained over her hair and shoulders.Landon’s men were inside, guns raised, firing across the room. One dropped almost instantly, a bullet tearing into his chest. Another hit the ground rolling, firing back as two of Ricci’s guards fell near the entrance. The air was filled with smoke and screams. Wood splintered as bullets ripped through tables, chairs, and walls. Suzi pressed her hands over her ears, heart

Suzi stared at the man in front of her.The man sitting in the booth looked barely older than her, his face smooth, boyish even. His jaw was clean, his skin fresh. But his eyes…his eyes ruined the illusion. Dark, sharp, and cold. They pinned her like knives, a shadow that didn’t belong on a face so young. He leaned back against the velvet seat, one arm stretched along the top, fingers tapping lazily. His lips curved faintly, not a smile, not a frown. Something in between.“Suzi, right?” he asked.“Who are you?” she whispered.“Why don’t you sit down?” he said. She slid onto the edge of the booth, keeping her body stiff.“Better,” he murmured. His eyes scanned her face, lingering on the faint tremble of her mouth. “Max’s little wife. I’ve been curious about you.”The mention of Max made her chest squeeze. She forced her lashes down, her hands folding tighter. His eyes narrowed, studying her. A slow smile tugged at his mouth. “Sorry. Allow me to introduce myself. Richard Sinclaire, bett

Daphne kept thinking about what Suzi had said. She should have laughed. Should have snapped at the girl, shut it down before the thought could root. Instead, she found herself considering.Landon was in the study, hunched over the oak desk. Maps, dossiers, photographs of Ricci’s men were spread out in messy layers. His pistol rested on the blotter beside an untouched glass of bourbon. He looked up the moment Daphne stepped in.“Tell me you’ve got news,” he said. His tone was clipped, impatient. His brother still hadn’t woken. Every hour stretched him tighter.“I’ve got…something,” Daphne said carefully.Landon’s eyes narrowed. “Something good or something that’s going to make me throw that glass against the wall?”She folded her arms, leaning on the desk’s edge. “Suzi wants to help.”Landon blinked. Then he let out a sharp laugh with no humor. “Help?”“She’s serious,” Daphne pressed. “She wants to be bait.”The room stilled.Landon’s chair screeched back as he stood, looming over her.
