Dante Romano

My blood runs cold as I rush to Issa’s side.

She’s lying on the wet ground, her dress is soaked and her face is pale as snow. My hands shake when I touch her, and they come away slick with blood.

No, no, no.

“Issa!” I choke out her name, tapping her cheek, but she doesn’t move. Her lashes flutter once, and that’s all.

“Stay with me, baby. Please, stay with me.”

I slide one arm beneath her legs, the other around her shoulders, and lift her into my arms. She feels weightless and still. The rain pelts my face as I carry her to the car, my heart pounding so loud it drowns out everything else.

I lay her carefully in the back seat, one hand still pressed against her stomach as if I can keep everything inside her from falling apart.

“Hold on, Issa,” I whisper. “You and the twins…you’ll be fine. You have to be fine.”

The tires screech as I pull onto the road. My hands are trembling so hard I can barely hold the wheel. Her blood is everywhere, on my hands, my shirt, the steer

Annalissa Hale I wake up before my alarm goes off. My heart is already beating like i’m late for something. It takes me a few seconds to realize why.Today. Today is the day I finally meet the buyer of MuseCo.I lie on my back, staring at the ceiling as pale morning light creeps through the curtains. My chest feels tight, like someone tied a ribbon around my ribs and pulled just a little too hard. I don’t usually get nervous like this. I pitch to boards. I negotiate contracts. I’ve handled men who thought they could talk over me simply because they could afford to.So why does this feel different?I tell myself it’s just the uncertainty. I hate not knowing who I’m dealing with. I hate faceless power. It’s easier when the threat has a name.I swing my legs out of bed and exhale slowly. Get it together, Issa. You’ve survived worse than a mysterious billionaire with a habit of secrecy. The apartment is quiet as I pad down the hallway, the wooden floor cool beneath my feet. I pause out

Dante Romano The room is too quiet.Paris hums beyond the tall windows of my penthouse suite. I lean against the desk, phone pressed to my ear, listening to my sister breathe on the other end of the line.“Dante,” Ornella says softly, and that alone is enough to tighten something in my chest. “When are you coming back to the States?”I close my eyes. She’s been asking the same question for weeks now, ever since word spread through the family that she’s officially engaged. Ornella and engaged in the same sentence? The thought should make me smile. It doesn’t because I’m not sure I’ll make it back in time.“I don’t know yet,” I say evenly. “Work here isn’t done.”There’s a pause. Then, quieter, “I’m holding off setting a date because of you.”I straighten. “That’s ridiculous.”“It’s not.” Her voice sharpens. “You’re my big brother. I want you there.”“You don’t need me there,” I reply, though the words feel wrong the moment they leave my mouth. “Mum will be there. Grandpa too. The w

Annalissa HaleMornings in my apartment are never quiet.I wake to the sound of running water where there shouldn’t be running water, drawers slamming, and Kian loudly declaring that socks are optional if you truly believe in yourself. I lie there for exactly three seconds, staring at the ceiling, wondering if this is what surrender feels like.“Why are there footsteps on my walls?” I call out, pushing myself upright.“Mummy!” Hania’s voice floats in, far too cheerful for this hour. “Kian is using your lipstick to draw muscles on his arms.”“I am absolutely not…” Kian protests, then pauses. “Okay, maybe a little.”I groan and drag myself out of bed.By the time I make it to the living room, chaos has fully bloomed. Kian is shirtless, flexing in front of the mirror with red smudges on his arms, while Hania stands nearby with crossed arms, already dressed and glaring at him like a disappointed manager.“You said you’d wear the blue shirt,” she says.“I changed my mind,” Kian replies.

Annalissa HaleThat evening, just as I’m about to shut down my computer and clock out, an email notification pops up on my screen.I sigh, already mentally halfway home, but I click it anyway.[Leclair Academy – Important Update Regarding Classroom Renovations.]My eyes skim the first few lines, then slow.Renovations will be starting soon. Some classes will be temporarily redistributed. Certain students will be placed in higher grades for the duration of the renovations. Performance will be monitored. If satisfactory, placement may become permanent. My breath stills.Hania Hale and Kian Hale will be placed in Grade Three.I stare at the screen for a long moment.Grade three. They’re barely six.I know they’re intelligent, sometimes frighteningly so, but I’ve always made a conscious effort not to push them. I want them laughing, getting dirty, arguing over silly things, not drowning under expectations they didn’t ask for. Childhood is supposed to be light, not filled with academi

Dante Romano The car hums beneath us as we pull away from the curb. Mackenzie sits across from me in the backseat, tablet balanced on her knee, already in work mode. “Leclair Academy finalized the paperwork this morning,” she says without looking up. “The dean wants you to meet the other investors today. Mostly legacy families. Old money. They’re excited.”I grunt in response. Excitement is irrelevant. Results aren’t.Mackenzie scrolls. “Muse Co is progressing well. The takeover campaign is… surprisingly clean.”I glance at her. “Surprisingly?”She nods. “The strategist they hired is efficient. Discreet. Refuses spotlight. No unnecessary press, no ego-driven moves. It’s rare.”“So she’s doing her job,” I say flatly. “Why are we discussing it?”Mackenzie smiles faintly, like she expected that answer. “Just thought you’d like to know. Whoever she is, she understands power dynamics.”“Good,” I reply. “Then she won’t be a problem.”The car slows as we approach the academy. I hear it b

Annalissa Hale Wedding dress shopping is not something I ever imagined myself doing on a Saturday morning with two five-year-olds in tow, but here I am standing in the middle of a luxurious bridal boutique that smells faintly of lavender and expensive fabric, while chaos incarnate clings to my legs.Clarissa is already drifting between racks of gowns. Her fingers graze satin and lace with bright eyes in that way that tells me she’s allowing herself to be excited. Really excited. Not the careful, guarded kind. The twins, on the other hand, are unimpressed.“Mummy,” Kian announces loudly, tugging at my coat, “this place is boring.”Hania, standing beside him with her arms crossed, tilts her head critically at a dress mannequin. “I think it’s elegant,” she says. “But the hemline is impractical.”The sales assistant blinks. “Hemline? Impractical? How old are you?”Clarissa snorts. I press my lips together, trying not to laugh.“It’s a wedding dress, Hania,” I say gently. “It doesn’t
