The long flat tone filled the medical room.

“Clear!” the doctor shouted again.

Mako’s body jerked again under the pads. For a moment nothing changed. Then the monitor blipped. Once. Twice. A weak but steady rhythm returned.

Everyone in the room released a breath at the same time.

“He’s back,” the doctor said, still working fast. “Unstable, but he’s back. We need to move him now. This place isn’t equipped for what he needs.”

Gerald’s hands, which had been locked into fists at his sides, slowly

Gerald did not move.“Hiding what?” he asked.Lily stepped back from him and sat on the edge of the bed, hands clasped tight in her lap. For a moment she seemed to be ordering the words so they would not come out broken.“I got a message from the orphanage. St. Agnes. One of the sisters had been digging through what was left of my old file, I asked her to, we spoke some days back.”Gerald’s eyes narrowed. “And you kept it from me.”“Yes.” Lily forced herself to hold his gaze. “Because I didn’t know what it meant yet. And because I wasn’t sure where I stood with you.”He stayed standing, waiting for her to continue.“She spoke to the retired matron who was there when I was brought in,” Lily continued. “She said, a woman left me at night and that the woman was shaken. She told the matron she had been ordered to kill the child. She couldn’t do it. So she dumped me there and ran.”Gerald’s voice came out low. “Ordered to kill you.”“Yes. She said my birth mother was already dead, but my

Gerald stayed back in his study long after Mako left.He kept replaying the words Mako had said. Lily may actually be in love with you. He had faced gunmen, old families, and wars but facing this felt different. It made him think about every fight, every night, every time she had stood her ground and still come back to him.He left his study, and found her in her room.Lily was by the window, arms folded, eyes on the dark stretch outside. She did not turn when he entered.“If you came to repeat no,” she said, “save it.”“I didn’t.” Gerald closed the door. “I came to fix what I broke.”That made her turn around and look at him. Her face was tired, guarded, still marked by the tears from their fight.“You think coming in here and speaking with a calm voice fixes it?” she asked. “You put another woman…no…Cleo of all women as an option and you never actually intended to tell me.. .”“I should have told you about the condition myself,” Gerald said. “Not telling was wrong, and it makes me l

The question hung between them like a live wire.Gerald stared at Lily. For a second he looked almost caught, like someone had pulled a curtain back too fast.“You heard that,” he said.“Yea.” Lily did not move from where she stood. “You told them if they find who killed your father and why, you’ll marry Cleo. So don’t stand there and tell me you want me by your side like it means something because it does not.”Gerald’s jaw tightened. “It was just a condition. Not a wedding date. Not a promise I wanted to give. My hands were tied, I had to untangle it and be the one holding the rope.”

One of Don Megalion’s men called Gerald the next afternoon with the lead. A former associate of Benson, some guy named Rizzo. He used to do some quiet jobs on the south docks years back. According to the tip, Rizzo had been talking in private about the night Gerald’s father died. And he’s willing to share the information for the right prize.“We have confirmed his address,” the caller said. “Old row house near the rail line. He drinks alone most afternoons. If you truly want answers, today is the day.”Gerald already felt doubtful how easy it sounded. Still, he could not ignore it. He took Mako and four men, left the estate and told Lily only that he had business across town. She watched him leave, unbothered by his issues then went down to the gym.The row house felt wrong when they arrived.Smoke was coming from the side windows. Neighbors stood back on the cracked sidewalk. Somewhere a dog barked without stopping. Gerald was out of the car, gun low, moving fast with Mako and his me

Lily got back to the estate later in the afternoon, when the sun was still up.The house was quiet. She went to Gerald’s office but no sound came from the study. There was no movement from the side of the house where Mako had been resting. She asked one of the men near the stairs.“Where is Gerald?”“Boss went out with Mako about an hour ago, miss. He did not mention when he would return.”Lily went upstairs, closed her bedroom door, and locked it. For a moment she only stood there with her back against the wood, phone in her hand. The text from the orphanage had been making her uncomfortable all the way home from Maria’s cafe. Now the house was empty enough to respond. She sat on the edge of the bed and called. It rang four times before a woman answered. “St. Agnes line.”“This is Lily Robinson. Someone texted me from this side earlier. Said there was news on my old file.”A short pause. “Yes. I’m Sister Margaret. I handled what was left of the sealed intake notes after the recent a

The ride back from the party was quiet for most of the journey.Gerald drove with his hands tight on the wheel. Lily sat beside him, the tension from the night sitting under her skin. She had handled the man in the hallway. She had faced Cleo without folding. None of that seemed to cool the heat rolling off Gerald.“You’re still angry,” she said.“I’m both angry and proud..” His eyes stayed on the road. “Proud you shut that bastard down. Angry you had to at all.”“I told you I handled it.”“I know. That’s the problem. You keep handling things before I get there.”Lily turned her head. “Would you rather I freeze and wait?”“I’d rather no one put hands or words on you in the first place.”Lily did not respond any further, she still did not know where she stood with the whole Cleo situation, if they could find his father’s killer, then she would be discarded in no time. They arrived at the estate a few hours later. Inside the house, Gerald did not allow her to go her room. He walked her
