RENZO'S POV

I found Don in his study before sunrise, the same way I always seemed to find him lately, sitting behind his desk with a glass of something dark he hadn't touched.

He looked up when I knocked, already reading something in my face before I said a word.

"This early," he said. "It's never good news at this hour."

"It's not, Don."

He set his pen down and gestured to the chair across from him. I didn't sit. Some things felt wrong to deliver while seated, like the weight of them needed me

RENZO’S POVDon questioned Daniel for an hour and a half, and at the end of it he knew nothing he hadn’t known at the start.I stood by the study door for all of it. Don asked where Daniel had been that morning, who knew he was coming, who he had told, and whether he had talked to anyone about the lunch since Wednesday. Daniel answered every question in the same easy voice. He said he understood why Don was asking, and that in Don’s place he would have asked the same things. He had told Valentina about the lunch and no one else. When Don asked for his phone, he put it on the desk unlocked, without being asked twice, and Leo took it into the next room and went through it for half an hour. It held calls to Valentina, calls to his office, and an order for a pizza. At four o’clock Don let him go. Valentina walked him out to his car, and I walked a few steps behind them. Daniel told her quietly not to be angry with her father, and she nodded and stood in the yard until the gate had closed

VALENTINA’S POVDaniel held out his hand to Renzo before he had even taken his seat.“I wanted to say this properly,” he said. “We didn’t start well, and most of that was my fault. I’d like to start again.”The dining room went quiet. My father was already at the head of the table, and he watched them over the rim of his water glass and said nothing. Renzo looked at the hand for a moment, long enough that I thought he might leave it there. Then he took it, shook it once, and let go.“Petrov,” he said.“Daniel.” Daniel smiled as if he had been given a gift. “Thank you.”It was exactly what I had asked for, and I couldn’t understand why it made me so uneasy. There were four places at the table that day. My father had told me that morning that Renzo would eat with us, and when I asked why, he said Daniel had asked for it and he saw no reason to refuse. Daniel sat across from me, with Renzo on his other side, so close that their chairs almost touched. Wherever I looked, there was one of th

RENZO’S POVLeo found me in the hallway outside Valentina’s room at four in the afternoon. Don had ordered him to sleep for four hours that morning, and he looked as if he had managed three. He had the folder under his arm.“I found the man who stole the yearbook,” he said.“Not here,” I said. “Valentina’s inside.”“Then come down with me. One of the men can stand at her door.”We went to his small office next to the garage. He shut the door, sat on the edge of his desk, and held the folder in his hands without opening it.“His name is Ilya,” he said. “He’s a thief who robs empty houses for people who pay cash and don’t ask questions. I’ve been looking for him since Sunday, and I only found him today, because a man I know owed me a favor and phoned me while I was asleep. I sent two of my men to the station and the delivery company while I talked to him.”“What did he tell you?”“That someone phoned him on Thursday night. He didn’t give a name. He said there was a house with a garage, a

DON VALETTI'S POVLeo gave me the report at seven in the morning, standing in front of my desk and looking like he had not slept and did not expect to."Nothing from the four men on Daniel," he said. "He went home yesterday evening and stayed in all night. He doesn't leave for the firm until ten, so there's nothing else to report.""And the car?""Gone by two. The man in it drove off without turning on his lights until he reached the corner. My man followed him as far as the river road and lost him in the traffic." He rubbed his eyes. "The plates are false. I'm sure of it."I put down my coffee. "So we have a man in a grey car, with false plates, sitting outside the one man we don't trust, for days, and he is not ours.""No, Don.""Then someone else wants Daniel watched." I thought about that for a moment. It could be a rival who knew something about him, or an enemy of his own, and I didn't know which I liked less. "Keep your men on Daniel, and find out who that driver is. Then go an

DANIEL’S POVI waited until eight to call her. Eight was late enough that she would have spent the evening thinking about me, and early enough that she wouldn’t have talked herself out of it.“Hi,” she said. She sounded tired and a little careful.“Hi. Did I wake you?”“No. I was just sitting here.”“I’m sorry about this afternoon.” I let the pause run for a moment. “I think I pushed you. I asked you something I had no right to ask, and then I stood there like I was waiting for a grade.”“You didn’t push me.”“I did, a little. But I want you to know I wasn’t trying to catch you out. I just wanted to hear you say it, so I could stop wondering.” I kept my voice low and even, the way a man talks when he is being honest and it costs him something. “You said no, and I believe you. That’s the end of it.”It was a small lie, wrapped inside a bigger truth, which is the only kind worth telling. I knew what she was feeling on the other end of the line without having to see her. This afternoon s

RENZO'S POV"Tell me what you saw," Don said.It was past seven, and the lamp on his desk was the only light in the study. Valentina had gone up to her room an hour earlier, and I stood in front of the desk with Leo while the garden went dark behind Don's window."I couldn't hear a word," I said. "I stood by the wall like you told me, too far away. Daniel gave her pastries in a paper bag, and then they sat down and she did most of the talking while he listened.""For how long?""Most of the hour. Near the end, he leaned toward her and waited, like he had asked her something. She shook her head, fast." I kept my eyes on the lamp. "When he left, he came back two steps and spoke close to her ear. She stayed on that bench a long time after he finally left."Don nodded slowly and didn't ask what I thought Daniel had said, which I was glad of."He didn't try for the house," Leo said. "He stayed on the path the whole time. He never looked at the windows.""He doesn't have to look," Don said.
