Chapter 2

Author: Harper
The day Sofia got out of the hospital, my father brought her back to the Moretti estate without asking me first. When I came downstairs, the staff were carrying her luggage back into the east wing. It was the part of the house closest to my parents' room.

Before my coma, the east wing had always been empty. I only found out after I woke up that Sofia had been living there for three whole years. Four months ago, she had moved out on her own, and my mother cried all night. Now she was back.

"We still don't know who was behind it," my father explained from the bottom of the stairs. "It isn't safe for her to live alone."

"Then bringing her back is fine with me."

I stopped on the last step. "But why did you give her my guards too?"

My father faltered. Ever since I woke up, I'd been recovering with four bodyguards assigned to me. That morning, the head of my security detail had suddenly told me that three of them would be protecting Sofia from then on. My father quickly pulled himself together.

"She just went through something. She needs more people for a while. You're here on the estate. You won't be in any danger."

"The last time, it happened on our own territory too."

The air went still. The ambush at the docks three years ago was a wound nobody wanted to touch. My father's frown deepened.

"Elena."

"I'm just reminding you," I said. "Danger doesn't go away just because this place has the Moretti name on it."

My mother came out of the east wing just in time to hear the last part.

"The guards are only with Sofia for now," she said, her voice softening. "Her father already died for you. We can't let anything happen to her too."

"Maybe we could make it up to her some other way?" I said, a little wearily. "Give her a villa, a luxury car, a piece of the docks..."

"Elena!" my father snapped. "You're my daughter. You're my heir. You shouldn't be so small-minded."

The fight went right out of me, and I didn't say another word.

At dinner, the first thing I saw when I walked into the dining room was Sofia sitting to my father's right. That was my place. For as long as I could remember, I had sat there at every formal family dinner.

When she saw me, she started to get up right away. My mother pressed down on her shoulder.

"You're still hurt. Don't get up."

So Sofia sat back down and gave me an awkward little smile.

"I didn't know this was your place."

I didn't call her on it. She'd lived here for three years. There was no way she didn't know. I pulled out another chair and sat down.

Almost everything on the table was food she liked: salty dishes, seafood, and a bottle of hard liquor from my father's private collection. My physical therapist had told me again and again to stay away from alcohol for at least six months, and the inflammation around my old gunshot wound meant I couldn't handle anything too rich or spicy. But nobody remembered.

Halfway through dinner, my father had the butler bring in a black case. Inside was a pistol I knew all too well. My gun.

It bore the crest reserved for the Moretti Don. When I was little, my father used to hold my hand and tell me, "You're Daddy's only little princess. You're the Moretti family's most precious jewel. Everything Daddy has will be yours one day."

The grip still had the shallow, crooked scratch I'd carved into it when I was 17. My fingers went still. My father slid the case over to Sofia.

"Keep it on you from now on."

Sofia looked at him in surprise. "This is Elena's."

"She's in no shape to handle a gun right now," my father said. "Once she's recovered, I'll get her a newer one."

My father had promised that once my arm regained its strength, he would hand it back to me himself. It would mean I could protect myself again. It would also mean he saw me as more than a patient stuck in a hospital bed. Now he had given it to Sofia without even asking me.

Sofia was still trying to turn it down.

"I really can't take this."

My father had already closed the case.

"Take it."

She finally took it. I set down my silverware.

"Dad."

My father looked at me.

"Protect her, fine," I said. "But stop taking things from me to make it up to her."

My mother's smile faded.

"What kind of thing is that to say? We're family. Why are you keeping track of what's yours and what's mine?"

"If we're family, then why is it always my things that get taken to make it up to her? Has the Moretti family gone broke in the last three years?"

Sofia went pale.

"I can give you the gun back."

"I wasn't talking to you."

Tears sprang to her eyes.

My mother frowned at once. "Elena."

I looked up at her.

"What?"

She seemed caught off guard when I pushed back. After a few seconds, she said, "We're the ones who want to be good to Sofia. Even if you're upset, you shouldn't take it out on her. You never used to be like this. When did you get so thoughtless?"

I looked at her and suddenly couldn't say a thing.

I felt like an outsider who had barged in, out of place in my own home.

Matteo was discharged three weeks later. He didn't send anyone to pick me up.He just texted me to ask if I'd be willing to meet him at the church. The same church where we had twice failed to get married.I said yes. That afternoon, there were no guests in the church.Light from the stained glass fell across every pew.Matteo sat alone in the front row.His wound still hadn't fully healed, and he moved slowly when he stood up.I walked over.He set a ring box and a set of keys on the pew.The ring was the one found at the docks. It had been through the fire, and there was still a tiny black mark on the edge."I had it fixed," he said."I didn't replace it with a new one."I picked it up and looked at it for a while. When he was 19, he had held out this ring and asked me to marry him. After that, we waited far too many years."Elena.""Yeah.""I always thought I owed you a wedding."He looked around the empty church."It took me until now to see it. The wedding wasn't what I needed to

His arm was scraped up too.The surgery lasted more than three hours.I waited until the doctor came out and said the bullet hadn't hit anything vital. My mother's legs nearly gave out.My father held her up.Matteo woke up the next afternoon.Luca and I went in together.I was the first person he saw."Are you hurt?""No."He was visibly relieved. Then he noticed Luca. The old Matteo would probably have ordered him out right away. This time, he was only quiet for a moment."Thank you."Luca nodded."It was the right thing to do."I was a little surprised.Matteo looked back at me."You were here the whole time?""I waited until your surgery was over."For a second, his face lit up."So does that mean—""No."I knew what he was going to ask."I just came to make sure you were okay.""Because I took a bullet for you?""Because you took a bulle

Within moments, gunfire was everywhere on the estate. My father's men held the main house.Luca's people locked down the side corridor and the back courtyard.I fell back toward the wine cellar with my mother and Walter. No one tried to take my gun away. And no one told me to hide in the back anymore, either.Luca pressed a spare magazine into my hand."They've got people at the back door. Go through the wine cellar.""Where's my mom?""Right up ahead."My mother looked back at me.I grabbed her hand."Come on."For the first time, she didn't ask a single question. She just followed me down. The west courtyard fell fast.We were halfway down the underground passage when two gunmen burst in through the cellar's side door.Luca fired first.I pulled my mother back behind some wooden crates and raised my gun to pin down the second man."Get her out of here!"The guards got my mother and Walter out first.Luca and I were the last to pull out.Outside the garage, there was smoke everywhere.

Two days later, my father called me."Come home one last time."I didn't say anything. He added quickly, "I'm not asking you to move back."The lawyer will be there."I want to give back everything I owe you."I frowned."Like what?""The property in your name, your accounts, the jewelry your mother set aside for you, and the investments our family has managed for you all these years."My father paused."All of it will be separated from the family's finances and put under your control."No conditions."Luca and I returned to the estate together. My mother was waiting at the front entrance. She simply handed me a long box. Inside was the diamond necklace from my 18th birthday."Sofia left it behind," my mother said quietly. "It was always yours."I picked it up and looked at it for a few seconds. "Thank you."Her eyes welled up at once.In the dining room, my place at my father's right was empty. When I walked in, everyone turned to look at me.Walter Hayes, my parents' lawyer, began go

The door opened just as Matteo reached it.I raised the gun.I held it steady and aimed it straight at his chest.Everyone in the hallway froze."Tell them to back off.""Elena.""Back off."He stared at me for a few seconds, then raised a hand.Everyone stepped back."Where's Luca?""Next door.""Open it.""Put the gun down first.""Matteo."I looked at him."Are you telling yourself again that it's all fine, as long as I don't get hurt in the end?"Little by little, the color drained from his face.Matteo's eyes slowly filled with tears."I'm just scared of losing you again.""So you still don't get it.""I already lost you once, for three years." His voice was hoarse. "I can't—"I cut him off. "Let Luca out."It was a long time before Matteo finally turned his head."Open the door."When they brought Luca out, he had a small scrape on his lip.He saw the gun in my hand, and the first thing he said was, "You okay?""I'm fine."I looked at Matteo."Give him back his things."One by on

It was Matteo himself. And the news he'd brought was true.Sofia had been in touch with two of her old hired guns, and they already had photos of this block.Luca's people were moving the cars and equipment.I opened the door and let Matteo in."We're moving tonight," I told him."Where to?""Luca's handling it."His gaze shifted to Luca. Then it settled on Luca's mouth, which was still a little red.Matteo's face darkened in an instant."What's going on between you two?"I didn't dodge the question."We're together."He looked like he hadn't understood."What?""Luca and I are together."The living room went deathly quiet."Since when?""Just now."Matteo stared at me."Because he saved your life?"That stopped me for a second.A moment later, I laughed instead."You just told me that saving someone's life doesn't mean you owe them anything."His expression froze."Then why him?""Because I like him.""Elena."His voice was tight.
