Chapter 5

Penulis: Harper
Three weeks after Sofia got out of the hospital, Matteo suddenly started coming back to me every day. At first, I didn't know what had happened. It was only later that I heard from his driver that Sofia had danced with another man at a club she and Matteo often went to, and the two of them had fought over it.

Matteo stopped going to see her.

When I asked him about it, he only said, as if it were nothing, "Who she wants to get to know is her business."

He said it so calmly that I almost believed him. For those few days, it felt like he was finally giving me all the time he'd owed me over the past three years. He came with me to rehab. He had dinner with me. He even planned my birthday all over again, after two disasters in a row had kept me from celebrating it.

On my birthday, he took me to a rooftop restaurant in Manhattan. The whole floor had been cleared except for one table. The lights of New York spread out below us, and the wind curled around the glass walls. Wrapped in his jacket, I suddenly remembered the year I turned 17, when he first took me up to the roof of the old Rossi building.

Back then, he hadn't taken over anything yet. He shoved a can of truly awful soda into my hand and promised that once he had money, he'd rent out the best spot in the whole city for my birthday.

"What are you thinking about?"

Matteo slid the cake over to me.

"How broke you used to be."

He laughed.

"When was I ever broke?"

"When I was 17."

"I wasn't broke. I just hadn't started making real money yet."

I laughed too. I hadn't felt this light in a long time. I even started to wonder whether I'd just been too sensitive these past few months.

Maybe he was just tied down by what he owed her and his sense of duty. Maybe with enough time, we really could go back to how things were. Halfway through dinner, Matteo's phone lit up several times in a row.

He glanced at it but didn't answer.

"Work?" I asked.

"Nothing important."

Ten minutes later, he got up to take a call about Rossi family business and left his other phone, the encrypted one, on the table. Its screen suddenly lit up. I hadn't meant to look.

But the message was so long that the preview took up the whole lock screen.

"I already talked to him and made things clear. Can you please have your people lift the ban on him? I promise I won't dance with him again, and I won't see him alone either. Matteo, I know I was wrong. I really do."

My fingers slowly went cold. Right below it was a second message.

"It's been three days since you came to see me. You can't still be mad, can you?"

I stared at the word "ban."

When Matteo came back, the first thing he saw was the lit-up screen. He stopped short. I looked up at him.

"You banned that man from every Rossi family venue?"

His face darkened a little.

"It's just a warning."

"You had to ban him from every club and restaurant you control just to warn him?"

"The guy has a shady background."

"So because Sofia danced with him once, you ran him out of your territory?"

Matteo reached over and took the phone.

"Elena, it's not what you think."

Suddenly, I laughed.

"Then what is it?"

He didn't answer. I stood up.

"Look at me."

Matteo's frown deepened.

"Elena."

"Look me in the eye and say it."

I pointed at the phone in his hand and asked, slowly and clearly, "You've been coming back to me these past few days. Is that because you finally decided to set clear boundaries with Sofia, or are you just doing it to spite her?"

His jaw tightened.

"I came back because today is your birthday."

"Then why won't you answer the first part?"

"Because it's a pointless question."

"Not to me."

The air grew colder by the second. He was clearly running out of patience.

"She took a bullet for me. I don't want her running around with some guy nobody knows anything about. Is that a problem?"

"Would you blacklist a guy friend of mine from every Rossi family venue?"

"You'd never do something like that."

"So you still haven't answered."

Matteo shut his eyes for a second. Right then, the phone buzzed again. This time it was a photo.

It showed the wound on Sofia's shoulder, oozing blood, with part of the bandage soaked red. Under it was a single line.

"I think my wound opened up again."

Alarm flashed across Matteo's face. Almost instinctively, he grabbed his jacket off the back of his chair. I stayed where I was and watched him.

"Today is my birthday."

He paused.

"Her wound might be infected. I'm just going to take a look at it."

"There are doctors at the hospital."

"Elena." His voice hardened. "She took that bullet for me."

That again. Suddenly, I didn't have the energy to fight anymore.

"Go."

Matteo looked at me like he wanted to say something.

In the end, all he said was, "I'll be back later."

Then he was gone. The candles on the table were still burning. The waiter hovered near the door, unsure whether he should come in.

I sat back down and pushed the birthday cake away. It had only been cut once.

Matteo was discharged three weeks later. He didn't send anyone to pick me up.He just texted me to ask if I'd be willing to meet him at the church. The same church where we had twice failed to get married.I said yes. That afternoon, there were no guests in the church.Light from the stained glass fell across every pew.Matteo sat alone in the front row.His wound still hadn't fully healed, and he moved slowly when he stood up.I walked over.He set a ring box and a set of keys on the pew.The ring was the one found at the docks. It had been through the fire, and there was still a tiny black mark on the edge."I had it fixed," he said."I didn't replace it with a new one."I picked it up and looked at it for a while. When he was 19, he had held out this ring and asked me to marry him. After that, we waited far too many years."Elena.""Yeah.""I always thought I owed you a wedding."He looked around the empty church."It took me until now to see it. The wedding wasn't what I needed to

The ambulance sped the whole way.I knelt beside Matteo, pressing gauze to the wound. The blood kept seeping through.Luca sat on the other side. His arm was scraped up too.The surgery lasted more than three hours.I waited until the doctor came out and said the bullet hadn't hit anything vital. My mother's legs nearly gave out.My father held her up.Matteo woke up the next afternoon.Luca and I went in together.I was the first person he saw."Are you hurt?""No."He was visibly relieved. Then he noticed Luca. The old Matteo would probably have ordered him out right away. This time, he was only quiet for a moment."Thank you."Luca nodded."It was the right thing to do."I was a little surprised.Matteo looked back at me."You were here the whole time?""I waited until your surgery was over."For a second, his face lit up."So does that mean—""No."I knew what he was going to ask."I just came to make sure you were okay.""Because I took a bullet for you?""Because you took a bulle

Within moments, gunfire was everywhere on the estate. My father's men held the main house.Luca's people locked down the side corridor and the back courtyard.I fell back toward the wine cellar with my mother and Walter. No one tried to take my gun away. And no one told me to hide in the back anymore, either.Luca pressed a spare magazine into my hand."They've got people at the back door. Go through the wine cellar.""Where's my mom?""Right up ahead."My mother looked back at me.I grabbed her hand."Come on."For the first time, she didn't ask a single question. She just followed me down. The west courtyard fell fast.We were halfway down the underground passage when two gunmen burst in through the cellar's side door.Luca fired first.I pulled my mother back behind some wooden crates and raised my gun to pin down the second man."Get her out of here!"The guards got my mother and Walter out first.Luca and I were the last to pull out.Outside the garage, there was smoke everywhere.

Two days later, my father called me."Come home one last time."I didn't say anything. He added quickly, "I'm not asking you to move back."The lawyer will be there."I want to give back everything I owe you."I frowned."Like what?""The property in your name, your accounts, the jewelry your mother set aside for you, and the investments our family has managed for you all these years."My father paused."All of it will be separated from the family's finances and put under your control."No conditions."Luca and I returned to the estate together. My mother was waiting at the front entrance. She simply handed me a long box. Inside was the diamond necklace from my 18th birthday."Sofia left it behind," my mother said quietly. "It was always yours."I picked it up and looked at it for a few seconds. "Thank you."Her eyes welled up at once.In the dining room, my place at my father's right was empty. When I walked in, everyone turned to look at me.Walter Hayes, my parents' lawyer, began go

The door opened just as Matteo reached it.I raised the gun.I held it steady and aimed it straight at his chest.Everyone in the hallway froze."Tell them to back off.""Elena.""Back off."He stared at me for a few seconds, then raised a hand.Everyone stepped back."Where's Luca?""Next door.""Open it.""Put the gun down first.""Matteo."I looked at him."Are you telling yourself again that it's all fine, as long as I don't get hurt in the end?"Little by little, the color drained from his face.Matteo's eyes slowly filled with tears."I'm just scared of losing you again.""So you still don't get it.""I already lost you once, for three years." His voice was hoarse. "I can't—"I cut him off. "Let Luca out."It was a long time before Matteo finally turned his head."Open the door."When they brought Luca out, he had a small scrape on his lip.He saw the gun in my hand, and the first thing he said was, "You okay?""I'm fine."I looked at Matteo."Give him back his things."One by on

It was Matteo himself. And the news he'd brought was true.Sofia had been in touch with two of her old hired guns, and they already had photos of this block.Luca's people were moving the cars and equipment.I opened the door and let Matteo in."We're moving tonight," I told him."Where to?""Luca's handling it."His gaze shifted to Luca. Then it settled on Luca's mouth, which was still a little red.Matteo's face darkened in an instant."What's going on between you two?"I didn't dodge the question."We're together."He looked like he hadn't understood."What?""Luca and I are together."The living room went deathly quiet."Since when?""Just now."Matteo stared at me."Because he saved your life?"That stopped me for a second.A moment later, I laughed instead."You just told me that saving someone's life doesn't mean you owe them anything."His expression froze."Then why him?""Because I like him.""Elena."His voice was tight. "You've only been back a few days.""I was away from N
