Isabella's POV

I paced back and forth in my room, my torn engagement dress finally changed for comfortable clothes, but my mind was still racing.

The events of the night played on repeat—the gunfire, the panic, the violence in the basement, and then that name. Valentina.

Matteo's ex-girlfriend had sent armed men to attack me.

The thought was so absurd it almost didn't feel real. But it was real.

The blood on the captives' faces had been real.

The fear in the ballroom had been real.

And somewhere out there, a woman I had never met hated me enough to try to stop my engagement through violence.

What could Matteo had done to warrant this treatment from her? Because no one could say I was the cause of the attack. But the men had said they hold a personal resentment towards me.

Was valentina resenting me for Matteo engaging me? Was she jealous I had him in my grasp and she couldn't?

I checked my phone. It's nearly one in the morning, and Matteo still hadn't returned.

Isabella's POV Matteo's expression shifted immediately, suspicion replacing the frustration that had been there moments before. "How do you know Vincenzo left this morning?"I realised my mistake too late. I had revealed information I shouldn't have, exposed that I had been paying attention to things I wasn't supposed to notice."I saw him from the window," I said quickly. "When I was in your office earlier, looking out at the gardens. His car drove past, and it seemed odd that he was alone, without guards. That's all.""And you didn't think to mention this?""I didn't think it was necessary to mention your cousin left. Afterall he isn't a baby."He studied my face, clearly trying to determine if I was telling the complete truth. But before he could press further, he pulled out his phone."I need to call him to make sure he knows what's happening, that he needs to be careful." He dialled his number, waiting. "It's going straight to voicemail.""Maybe his phone is off.""Or maybe he'

Isabella's POV I stood there staring at the credit card in Matteo's hand, my mind scrambling for a believable explanation. But the anger that had been building since this morning, since finding the hidden threat, since feeling watched in my own home, finally bubbled over."Were you following me?" The accusation came out sharp, challenging."I was bringing you something you forgot." He held up the card again. "Something you would need if you were actually shopping.""That's not an answer. Were you following me or not?""I came to find you, yes. Is that a crime?" His voice remained calm, but I could see tension in his jaw. "You left in a hurry, forgot essential items, and given everything that's happened lately, I was concerned.""Concerned or suspicious?""Both." He pocketed the card. "You've been acting strange all morning. Distracted. Jumpy. And now you're out here alone, without proper security, doing something that's clearly not shopping."He was right. I knew he was right. But a

Isabella's POV I couldn't shake the image of Vincenzo driving away alone, his car moving quickly towards the gate like he was running from something. Or towards something he didn't want anyone to know about.Matteo was still holding me, still talking about celebrating our victories, but my mind was elsewhere. I needed to know where Vincenzo was going. I needed to understand what he was up to."I should go," I said suddenly, pulling away from Matteo's embrace."Go where?""Shopping. I need some things, and after everything that's happened, getting out of the house for a bit sounds good." The lie came easily, automatically. "I will just be getting normal things. Clothes, maybe some personal items."Matteo studied my face. "You want to go shopping. Now. After finding a death threat in Valentina's note.""Especially after finding that. I can't just sit here being scared. I need to do something normal, something that reminds me life exists outside of all this chaos." I moved towards the

Isabella's POV I stood in Matteo's office, staring at the glowing words under the UV light, my hands still shaking. The threat was clear, explicit, terrifying. Valentina planned to kill me. I needed to tell Matteo. I needed to show him what I had found. But he was still at his meeting with the Marchetti family, and I had no way to reach him without potentially exposing that I had been digging through things he had told me to leave alone.I took photos of the message with my regular phone, making sure the UV-reactive text was clearly visible. Then I carefully put the envelope back in its plastic bag, returned the UV light to the drawer, and left his office exactly as I had found it.Back in my room, I paced. The waiting was unbearable. Every minute that passed was another minute Valentina could be planning, another minute someone could be watching me through methods I hadn't detected yet.I pulled out my burner phone again, checking if Aunt Carla had responded to my earlier message

Matteo's POV I sat in the back of the car as my driver pulled up to the Marchetti building, my hand resting on the gun in my jacket pocket. My phone buzzed. A message from my father.*Be careful. Got word that someone in the Marchetti camp thinks you put them all in danger at the party. Meeting might not go well.*Perfect. Just what I needed this morning—walking into a potentially hostile situation whilst Isabella was back at the estate with Valentina somewhere out there planning her next attack. But this meeting was too important to postpone. The Marchetti contract was worth more than my personal safety, and if there was even a chance I could get information about it, I had to take that risk. The building was a converted warehouse in the industrial district—all exposed brick and modern fixtures, trying to look respectable whilst maintaining that edge of danger that said you were still dealing with criminals. Guards stood at the entrance, checking IDs, scanning for weapons.I clim

Isabella's POV I sat on my bed for several minutes after the footsteps retreated, my heart still racing, my mind trying to make sense of what had just happened. Someone had tried my door, had stood there, testing the lock, waiting. But who? And why?I couldn't just sit here wondering. I needed to know if I was truly in danger or if my paranoia was making me see threats where none existed.I crept to the door quietly, pressing my ear against it first. Silence. Nothing moving in the hallway. I checked the handle carefully, looking for any signs of tampering, any wires or devices that might have been attached.Nothing, the door was clean.I unlocked it slowly, easing it open just enough to peer out into the hallway. It was empty. There was no guards, no servants, no mysterious figures lurking in the shadows.I stepped out, moving carefully, scanning every corner. The hallway stretched in both directions, doors leading to other rooms, alcoves with decorative tables and vases. Everyt
