ADRIANO'S POV~

As I stood before her, my gaze traveled across her petite, slender frame. She was exactly the kind of woman I desired. But there was something different about this one. A spark, a defiance in her eyes that I couldn't resist. It was as if she was daring me to try and break her.

"What's your name, pretty nurse?" I asked, my voice low and seductive. I didn't usually bother with flirting, but there was something about her that made me want to. Something that made me want to see how far I could push her.

Her teeth clenched as she snarled at me. "Let go of me!" she demanded, pulling against my grip. I fought back a laugh, amused by her defiance. How adorable. Those flushed cheeks, the way her body stiffened against mine - it only made me want to push her further, a possessive need to claim her, to make her submit to me.

I pulled her closer, relishing the gasp that escaped her lips as her body melted against mine. The scent of lavender and vanilla filled my nostrils, intoxicating and sweet.

"You didn't answer me," I murmured, pressing my lips against her ear. "Ah, playing hard to get, are we? No matter. I know what to call you... and that's 'mine'." My voice dropped to a possessive growl, a promise of what was to come. "So, darling... What's your name?"

"If I had known that your real identity was the monster I was describing some minutes ago, I swear on my life... I would never bother to save you. I have no desire to be associated with a criminal and the likes of you. Let go of me this instant!"

I couldn't resist the dark chuckle that rumbled through my chest. I threw my head back in a hearty laugh, basking in the fire and defiance she showed.

Despite the chill in her words, I could see the fear flicker in her eyes. The tremble of her hands only served to fuel my desire. My hand slowly wrapped around her waist, feeling her delicate frame against my own.

She fit perfectly in my arms, slender and vulnerable. There was this great urge to suddenly protect her. Never let go of her.

"Is that a no?" I asked, relishing the cruel delight in my tone. "Tell me, dear pretty nurse, what's your name? I must know the name of my future wife."

Her eyes widened in shock, as though she couldn't quite believe what she was hearing.

I wanted to keep poking her. To see the range of beautiful expressions that would dance across her face. I was mesmerized, obsessed. Despite the shock of these newfound emotions, there was a thrill in knowing that I would never let go of her. I strangely found comfort in her presence.

"Wife?” She choked out the word, her voice barely above a whisper.

I felt my lips curl into a grin, relishing the power in the word, the way it rolled off my tongue. But before I could bask in my triumph, I saw her expression change. The fear that had been in her eyes was replaced by a dark fury.

Without warning, her palm connected with my cheek in a crackling slap that echoed through the empty halls. I was stunned, frozen in place, unable to believe what had just happened. My men gasped, equally shocked.

Her defiance, her audacity, was a slap in the face to my pride. In my shock, I loosened my grip and watched as she took several steps back. My men were still too stunned to react, and she saw the opportunity. In an instant, she turned and raced away, her footsteps echoing in the empty hallways.

I stood there, unable to move, my thoughts reeling. My mind struggled to comprehend what had just happened.

The shock that had paralyzed my men was slowly fading as the haze of disbelief lifted. Two of them started to move, no doubt planning to give chase and bring the woman back to me. But before they could take a step, I raised my hand in a silent command.

"Stop!" I barked out, watching as they froze in place. "Let her be."

I chuckled, the sound echoing through the empty hall. I knew my men were staring at me as though I'd gone insane, but I couldn't bring myself to care.

The thought of her, of the way she'd struck me down in a moment of weakness, sent a thrill through me. I wanted her, this woman who'd dared to defy me. And I'd have her, no matter what.

"I want that one," I said, my tone dangerous. "Find me every damn detail about her. Everything! Do not leave any stone unturned, especially her address for me and name first."

I rubbed the spot where she'd slapped me, a slow, deliberate caress.

My men stared at me with wide eyes, their jaws practically hitting the floor. But I just smiled, a half-smile that held a hint of something dark and possessive.

"Understood?" I asked, my voice a deadly calm.

"Yes sir," they chorused, their voices stiff with shock.

I hummed, and turned to my second in command, whose face was still stiff in shock.

“A woman slapped you." He whispered, as though he couldn't even believe what he had witnessed.

I nodded, humming again. “I know."

His mouth opened and then clamped shut again like a fish out of water. He knew it was something that had never happened. Strong men don't even dare to defy me not to talk of a petite, fragile woman whom I could easily break with a snap of my finger. People who had dared me had their special spot just underneath the earth. They all deserved it.

But this one woman?

“Just find her." I ordered and then bent to take a look at my wound which she had dressed up.

“You’ve never had any interest in any of the women who had thrown themselves at you. Why the sudden interest in this ordinary woman on your first encounter?” He sounded puzzled and it greatly amused me.

Slowly, I walked up to him. I raised my unbandaged arm and patted his cheeks, staring deep into his eyes. “You see Salvatore… because she's the first person who has ever dared to face me without fear—and even had the guts to hit me. Do me a favor and find her for me, Salvatore.”

CASSANDRA'S POV~

I stepped out of the hospital, my heart pounding in my chest as I glanced around, making sure no one was following me. A wave of relief washed over me as I spotted an empty taxi and flagged it down. Though exhausted, I knew I couldn't go home alone, scared I might be traced over there and decided to head straight to my boyfiend, Eden's tech start-up just some distance away from the hospital.

The moment I approached his office, the first thing that struck me was the stillness. Eden looked extremely absentminded despite the sound of the door's click signifying my presence, he didn't even turn to my direction. And it was then I took in how the office was chaos--- papers scattered like a tornado had hit here, phones unplugged, their cords coiled haphazardly across the room.

My heart sank at the sight of it all. My boyfriend, normally impeccably organized, was a mess. His shoulders were hunched forward, the tension palpable in his furrowed brow and clenched jaw.

The way his fingers repeatedly kept thrumming on his desk told me everything wasn't okay.

“Everything okay?” I asked softly, stepping closer to him. “You look so stressed.”

Eden's head snapped to my direction, an expression of anger flashed through his eyes before he looked away. "Why did you come?"

I swallowed hard. It was already at the tip of my tongue to tell Eden of the incident that had transpired in the hospital but I quickly changed my mind, seeing him stand to walk toward the window as though he was expecting someone.

I noticed immediately how he gripped the window frame with such force that the tips of his fingers were tinged white.

"Eden?" I whispered, placing a hand on his shoulder. "What's wrong?" Immediately he stiffened at my touch.

ADRIANO'S POV~The moment her scent hit me, every taut muscle in my body melted. Fuck. My entire system went lax as I pulled her tighter into my arms, burying my face in her hair and breathing her in like she was the last drop of oxygen in a world gone toxic.God, this woman was my drug. My anchor. My goddamn undoing."I missed you so fucking much, tesoro," I whispered into her hair, my voice hoarse, soaked in everything I hadn’t said since we fought. "Couldn’t sleep without you next to me. Couldn’t even breathe right."For the first time all day, I started to relax. Her warmth against me, the rise and fall of her chest, the faint scent of her shampoo—fuck, I was drifting. I’d just begun to doze off, barely halfway to peace, when she stirred. And shoved me.What the—My eyes snapped open, brows furrowing as I looked at her, confused. I thought she was asleep. • The Mafia King's Only Love   Chapter 53

CASSANDRA'S POV~I swallowed hard, yanking Adriano’s sleeve a little harder now as I silently begged him not to do something reckless—like bash Dario’s head into the concrete. “Please,” I whispered under my breath, “for the love of God, just walk away. Don’t give these people a show.”Cameras were out. Phones lifted. The internet was probably live-streaming this circus. Two men fighting over me? No, thank you. That’s not the kind of viral I wanted to be.Thankfully—miraculously—Adriano threw one last glare at Dario that looked like it could murder three generations of his bloodline, then turned sharply to me. Without a word, his hand clamped around my wrist, his grip firm but not painful, and he dragged me out of the restaurant like I was some briefcase.I looked back over my shoulder, only to see Dario standing there, smiling like a damn lunatic and waving at me like we were old friends parting after brunch. My throat tightened. I wanted to punch that smugness off his stupidly handso

  • The Mafia King's Only Love   Chapter 52

CASSANDRA'S POV~My jaw nearly hit the damn floor.I stared at Dario, wide-eyed, breath caught in my throat as if he’d just told me the sky was green or that gravity had stopped working. My ears buzzed, actually buzzed like someone had clapped cymbals against both sides of my skull. Was this a prank? Was he joking?Or worse... was I dreaming?A sudden wave of doubt washed over me and I panicked. I bit the inside of my cheek hard.“Shit,” I gasped under my breath when the sharp sting made my eyes water. That pain was too real.I wasn't dreaming.“Oh my God—are you serious?” I squealed, my voice coming out breathless, borderline hysterical.Dario’s brows drew together. “Are you okay? Do you need water?”Before I could even answer, he was already reaching for the bottle on the table, uncapping it and pouring it into my glass. I watched him, stunned by how calm he was while my entire nervous system felt like it was short-circuiting.I shook my head quickly, blinking away the shock. “Y-Yea

  • The Mafia King's Only Love   Chapter 51

CASSANDRA'S POV~I walked out of the hospital with my shoulders heavy, dragging behind me. My feet moved, but my spirit didn’t follow. It stayed somewhere back in that office, crushed beneath the weight of a suspension letter and pitying glances.God, I hated this feeling. The same old, soul-sucking feeling that clung to me like a shadow—like I was never enough. Never smart enough. Never strong enough. Never anything enough. And as if the universe hadn’t mocked me enough already today, thunder cracked violently across the sky. A warning. But I didn’t flinch. The rain followed almost instantly, pouring in thick sheets, drenching my scrubs and hair within seconds. I didn’t run. I didn’t even blink. I just stood there, arms limp at my sides, and let it soak me. Maybe, if I stood still long enough, the storm would wash this pain off me—scrub away the shame, the helplessness, the cruel sense of déjà vu that clung to my chest like a noose.I tilted my head back and closed my eyes. The rain

  • The Mafia King's Only Love   Chapter 50

ADRIANO'S POV~The city of Antwerp looked like a jewel box scattered open under the pale sunlight. Glass skyscrapers sparkled against the horizon, trimmed with gold and steel like a high-society necklace. I should’ve been impressed. I wasn’t. I sat at the head of a long, obsidian conference table in the penthouse of a luxury business tower—my tower. One floor below my diamond refinery, where billions worth of stones were processed every year. The room stank of money. Of ambition. Of suits with soft hands pretending they’d ever held power. A sleek woman in a fitted navy pantsuit stood beside the massive projector screen, tapping her laser pointer against an illuminated chart filled with graphs and numbers. “…and if we tap into Sierra Leone’s underutilized supply routes, we can increase exports by twelve percent while keeping taxation under the radar,” she explained in her best ‘please take me seriously’ voice. The room was a roundtable of European, Russian, and African diamond entr

  • The Mafia King's Only Love   Chapter 49

CASSANDRA'S POV~The moment I turned around and saw my mother still standing, eyes wide, staring right at me… and then at Adriano… and then back at me, my soul nearly flew out of my body.I turned crimson red on the spot, my whole face heating up like a microwave had just blasted me.Adriano, the shameless devil, just straightened like he was about to accept an award. And before I could even think of saving the situation, he smirked and said — loudly,"Mrs. Ashford, your daughter’s sweeter than all the desserts in Italy combined. And I’m starving."Oh. My. God.My heart stopped. My soul left my body. I almost blacked out right there. My mother’s jaw dropped. She flushed so deep a red, I was honestly concerned she might combust. Meanwhile, Adriano just stood there, looking proud of himself, like he’d just delivered the line of the century.Without thinking, I moved so fast I surprised myself — and pinched his butt. Hard.Adriano jumped a full foot off the ground like a startled cat, s

  • The Mafia King's Only Love   Chapter 48

CASSANDRA'S POV~Just as I was about to turn and leave, a loud, unexpected burst of laughter exploded behind me. I froze for a second, blinking in pure surprise. Was he... laughing?Slowly, I turned my head to see Dario clutching his side, trying—and failing—to contain himself. His blond hair was a wild mess against the crisp white pillow, and his green eyes gleamed mischievously even as he wiped a tear from the corner of his eye.I arched a brow, my patience thinning by the second, but I said nothing. I simply stood there, watching him like he was some curious animal at the zoo. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he hummed low in his throat and let out a satisfied sigh. Still chuckling lightly, he shook his head and said, "You are... refreshing, you know that?"I blinked, caught off guard by the softness in his voice."Most people," he continued, his lips still curled in amusement, "don't dare talk to me like that. Especially not here. Not in a country where even the air tr

  • The Mafia King's Only Love   Chapter 47

CASSANDRA'S POV~Everything went silent. I’m talking graveyard silent. The kind of silence that presses down on your ears and wraps around your chest like a steel wire. No one moved. No one even dared to breathe too loudly. Nurses exchanged nervous glances. A few took cautious steps back, eyes darting to the floor like maybe if they didn’t make eye contact, they could disappear. The bleeding man on the floor let out a soft, pained moan—barely audible. It was enough to make the silence even more deafening. Then, the click of the gun being cocked echoed like a gunshot itself. Gasps erupted all around me. A few nurses whimpered. One covered her mouth and squeezed her eyes shut. He was losing patience. And yet still… no one moved. No one stepped forward. So I did. I don’t know if it was courage or stupidity—or maybe just the fact that I knew if I didn’t move, someone else would die. I stepped out from the crowd. My heart was pounding so loud I could hear it in my ears, but I for

  • The Mafia King's Only Love   Chapter 46

CASSANDRA'S POV~The moment I shut Adriano’s door behind me, it felt like I was locking myself out of something I didn’t even know I needed until now.My steps faltered, my fingers tightening around the strap of my bag as the echo of his voice—so cold, so wounded—rattled in my ears. The look on his face when I said those words… God, I wish I could take them back. I wish I could rewind time and stop my own mouth from moving. But I didn’t go back.I couldn’t.I just walked faster, like creating distance between us would somehow protect me from the damage I’d already done. My chest ached with every step, and my vision blurred with the sting of tears that I fought tooth and nail to hold back. I wouldn’t cry here. I wouldn’t let them see me break. The guards bowed their heads politely as I passed. I smiled—or tried to. It came out crooked and pitiful, like my lips had forgotten how to stretch without trembling. The driver opened the SUV door, and I almost told him not to bother. I wanted t
