Chapter 6

ELENA

The car was long and black and so quiet that I could hear my own breathing.

The older guard, the one who had pulled Maria out of my room, opened the back door for me. He did not smile, but he waited until I was all the way inside before he closed it, gentle, like the door might hurt me.

"Thank you," I said.

He gave a small nod. "Marcus, ma'am. I'll be with you from now on."

"With me? Like a guard?"

"Something like that." And he shut the door before I could ask him more.

Damien got in on the other side. He did not look at me. He had his phone out before he even sat down, his thumb moving fast over the screen. A man sat in the front passenger seat, dark hair, a sharp jaw, a gold watch that caught the light. He turned halfway around and gave me a quick look. Not cold. Just careful.

"Morning, Elena," he said.

"Do I know you?"

Something moved across his face. It was gone fast. "Luca," he said. "You know me. You just don't remember."

"Luca." Damien's voice was low. He still did not look up from the phone. "Face front."

Luca turned back around without another word.

The car pulled away from the hospital. I held my bag close on my lap. There was not much inside it. A hairbrush, the gown they gave me, and the folder I had taken from the closet. I had pushed it down to the very bottom and put the gown over it. I had not had one minute alone to read it. Not one. Every time I touched it, someone walked in.

Now it sat on my lap like a hot stone. Damien was right next to me. I did not dare open the bag.

The city went past the window. Tall glass buildings. Busy roads. Street food carts with steam rising off them. People laughing at a bus stop. A big bridge over dark green water.

None of it meant anything to me.

I kept waiting for something to feel familiar. A shop sign. A park. A street corner where I had once stood. But it was like watching a movie about someone else's life. I had lived here for three years, maybe longer, and the city did not know me any more than I knew it.

I looked at Damien. His face was calm and closed. The light from his phone made his eyes look even colder.

"Where do we live?" I asked.

"Outside the city."

"Is it far?"

"Forty minutes."

He answered like a machine. No extra words. No looking up.

I tried again. "What happened to me? The accident. Nobody told me anything. Was I driving? Was someone else in the car?"

His thumb stopped on the screen. Just for a second. Then it moved again.

"Not now," he said.

"Then when?"

"When I say."

I bit down on my tongue so hard I tasted blood. I wanted to shout at him. I wanted to grab the phone out of his hand and throw it out of the window. But then I thought about that memory. The one that came to me in the hospital. My own voice, laughing, drunk on champagne, saying I would marry him no matter what it took.

What if I really had done something terrible to get him?

What if this cold man beside me was not cruel at all? What if he was just a man who had been trapped?

The thought made my stomach turn. I looked down at my hands. At the pale scar. At my bare ring finger.

"Maria tells me you hit her," Damien said.

He still did not look at me. He said it the same way you would say it looks like rain.

My back went stiff. "She told me it would have been better if I didn't wake up."

"Maria says a lot of things."

"So you believe her, and not me?"

"I didn't say that."

"You didn't say anything."

"Exactly." He typed something, sent it, and started on the next message. "Don't do it again."

"Then tell her not to say things like that to me again."

Luca made a small sound in the front seat. It might have been a cough. It might have been a laugh he swallowed. Damien's eyes flicked up to the back of Luca's head for half a second. Then down again.

After that nobody talked.

The city got smaller behind us. The glass buildings turned into houses, and the houses turned into trees. Tall, thick trees on both sides of the road, so close together that the light came through them in thin gold lines. We drove for a long time on a road with no other cars.

Then I saw the wall.

It was high and gray, stone at the bottom and black iron at the top. It went on and on, following the road, and there was no end to it that I could see. Then the car turned, and there were the gates.

They were huge. Black iron, with sharp points on top like spears. Two men stood in front of them. They wore dark clothes. And they held guns. Not small ones hidden under a jacket. Big ones. Rifles, held across their chests like they were ready to use them.

My heart started to pound.

The gates opened slowly without anyone touching them. The car rolled through. I turned in my seat and looked back. More men. One on top of the wall, walking along it. Another one by a small stone hut beside the gate, talking into something on his shoulder. All of them had guns.

I looked up ahead. There was a long drive lined with neat trees. And far down it, near a row of hedges, two more men with rifles, walking side by side like they were on patrol.

"Damien."

He did not answer.

"Damien, there are men with guns on the walls."

"I know."

"Why?"

Nothing.

"What kind of businessman needs guns on his fences?" I asked. My voice came out higher than I wanted. "What kind of business are you in?"

Chapter 65 ElenaThe dinning room was bright with the morning light that entered through the window. I had thought about this moment for so long, I started hearing my blood pumping. I pictured them eating the meal and eventually giving me a smile.I set the plates gently, bending and whispering to each of them. "I made these for you. I hope you like them."The pancakes had dark edges. I noticed it at the store but told myself it was no big deal. Kayden looked at his plate without zeal and my heart dropped a bit. Kade poked his with his fork and turned it over.A disgusted ire distorted his face. "They look funny."There was humor in my voice. "I know they look darker but they might taste better than they look.Kayden was having none of it. “Mummy Maria makes them better."My smile faltered, but it still remained on my lips. "Then maybe you can teach me how she likes them."Kade shrugged and said nothing. He didn’t refuse; I took it as a small

Chapter 64 ElenaI woke before everyone and spent the twilight hours of the day thinking about everything that was wrong. I had argued, pushed and insisted, rather than making things better it made them worse. I needed to them see me act as their mother. I had spent so much time trying to convince them that I never contemplated that my actions and words were in opposite directions.I would stop asking them to believe me and start giving them things to remember. I should start small and see where it goes. There was a lot to do before I could beat Maria but this morning could be the start of that race. I rose up, wore a simple dress, tied my hair back and went downstairs. The kitchen was in full flow already. Mrs. Hale was directly two maids when I entered. Her face perfectly still when she saw me. "I'd like to prepare breakfast for the children," I said."The kitchen is for staff, madam."I looked around. “I’m not asking to live here or

Chapter 63 ElenaI hadn’t slept since the incident. Every time I closed my eye, I could hear the recording starting over and over again, the sound of my voice coming alive and growing to fill up the ballroom as every eye turned towards me. I had told myself that the recording wasn’t true, it must have been doctored but I wasn’t so sure about that stance when morning found me on my bed.I moved to the dressing table and began grooming my hair. The door opened and Kade came in, already dressed for school. My heart was filled with warm that he had come to me. The warmth gave way to trepidation when I saw the glint in his eyes. He hadn’t taken another step further. "Everyone knows now," he said.I lowered the brush. "What does everyone know sweetheart?""Everyone heard what you said. Mummy Maria told us. She said you never wanted us and wished we were never born." His voice was flat, as he obviously tried to bury the hurt he was feeling. My fingers clutche

They were only in there because I didn’t trust they would remain still.Tomas had spent the last thirty minutes under the car, when he finally rolled out, his face told me all I needed to know.“The lines were cut. It was a cut thick enough to make the brakes failed when she had gotten some miles in.”I asked to repeat it again though I heard him clearly the first time."Someone cut the brakes. There is no planet this wasn’t an accident."I could hear my blood pumping as I remembered the black cat with no headlights almost ran her down if it weren’t for Marcus quick reflex."Do you have any idea when this was done?""I can’t say but it should pretty close because the brake fluid is pretty much intact.""Photograph everything and this is be

Chapter 61ELENA I saw Damien. Standing exactly where I had left him. Very still. His face was white. His eyes were on me. I could not read them. I could not read anything.I saw Theo. He had pushed out from the crowd near the stage. He was coming after me, fast, his face worried. And I saw Luca grab his arm.Luca held him. Hard. Pulled him back. Said something in his ear, quick and sharp. I could see his mouth move. Don't. Not here. Everyone's watching.Theo pulled. Luca held. Then Theo turned his head and looked at him. Just looked. I do not know what was in that look. But Luca's face changed. His hand loosened. He let go.And then they were both coming. Theo first. Luca right behind him.I did not wait. I pushed through the doors and out.The hall outside was long and empty and full of mirrors. I saw myself in all of them as I ran. Chapter 60ELENAThe voice did not stop.It went on and on, out of the speakers, filling up the whole gold room. My voice. I knew it was mine. I had heard it every day since I woke up. In the hospital. In my bedroom. Talking to Grace. Talking to Kayden over a little white table. But I had never heard it like this."I wish they were never born! I wish I never had them! Three of them, three, screaming all night, every night, and he doesn't even look at me! He looks at them. He loves them. He doesn't love me. They ruined my life! They ruined everything!"Loud. Ugly. Cracking at the edges. Wet with crying, or drink, or both.I could not move.I stood in the dark with my hand pressed against my stomach and listened to myself say it. And somewhere deep inside me, in the black hole where my memories should be, nothing moved. Nothing answered. No little light came on. No voice said, yes, I remember, I said that.Nothing.Just the words. Going on and o
