ELENAHis thumb kept moving on the phone. His face did not change. It was like I had not spoken at all. Like I was a fly buzzing in the car, and he had decided not to swat it.
I looked at Luca. He was staring straight ahead. His hands were folded on his knee. But I saw his jaw move, like he was holding something in. "Luca?" I said. "You'll tell me. Won't you?" "It's safer this way," Luca said quietly. "That's all." "Safer from what?" "Luca." Damien's voice again. Just the name. Nothing else. Luca said nothing more. I sat back in my seat and pressed my hand flat over the bag on my lap, over the folder hidden inside it. I thought of the guard at the hospital with the black badge. The whole empty floor. The nurses who shook when they almost said his name. The young one who said, "He wouldn't like me talking about this." I had thought they were afraid because he was rich. Because he was powerful. Now I looked at the men with guns, and I was not so sure it was only that. The house came into view. It was not a house. It was bigger than any house I had ever seen, or at least any house I could remember. Pale stone, three floors high, with tall windows that shone in the sun. Wide steps went up to a big front door made of dark wood. There was a fountain in the middle of the round drive, water falling into a stone bowl. There were roses along the front, red and white, cut so neat they did not look real. It was beautiful. It was also cold, the same way Damien was. Like something you were allowed to look at but not touch. "I live here?" I said. It came out as a whisper. "We live here," Damien said. It was the first thing he had said the whole ride that almost sounded like it meant something. But when I looked at him, he was still on the phone. The car went around the fountain and slowed down in front of the steps. My hands were wet. I wiped them on my knees. I did not know what I expected. Maybe that I would see the house and it would all come back. Maybe that my feet would know the steps. Maybe that the door would open and something inside me would say, yes, this is home. But nothing came. Just the same empty space where three years should have been. Marcus got out of the car in front of us. He must have been riding in the other car behind. He walked to my door and opened it and held out his hand to help me. I took it. His hand was big and warm and very steady. When I stood up, the world tilted a little, and he did not let go until I was standing straight. "Alright?" he asked, very low, so only I could hear. It was the first time anyone had asked me that and sounded like they cared about the answer. "I don't know," I said. He nodded, like that was a fair answer. Then he let go and stepped back, and his face went blank again, the way guards' faces do. Damien got out on the other side. He finally put his phone in his pocket. He walked around the back of the car, not fast, not slow, and stopped next to me. He did not touch me. He did not offer me his arm. He just stood there, looking up at the house like he owned it, because he did. That was when I saw her. The front door was already open. And standing at the top of the steps, like she had been waiting there for a long time, was Maria. She wore a soft cream dress this time, not the sharp black suit from the hospital. Her hair was down. Her feet were bare on the stone, like she had just come from somewhere warm inside. Like she had been walking around this house barefoot all morning. Like it was hers. There was a faint mark on her cheek. Makeup covered most of it. But I could still see it, a little pink under the powder, right where my hand had landed. And she was smiling. Not the thin, cruel smile from the hospital. A big, warm, welcoming smile. The kind of smile a woman gives when she opens the door of her own home. "You're back," she said. She was not looking at me. She was looking at Damien. "I had them make your coffee. It's in the study." "Thank you," Damien said. Just that. Thank you. Easy and normal, like they had said it to each other a thousand times before. Then her eyes moved to me. Slowly. The smile stayed on her mouth, but it did not reach her eyes at all. "Welcome home, Elena," she said. "I hope you don't mind. I've been taking care of things while you were gone." I stood at the bottom of the steps with my bag held tight against me, the folder inside it pressing into my ribs. Behind me the fountain was running. Somewhere on the wall a man with a gun was walking. Beside me my husband was not looking at me. And up at the top of the stairs, in the doorway of a house I could not remember, a woman who wanted me dead stood barefoot like the lady of the house. "What things?" I asked. Maria's smile got wider. From somewhere deep inside the house, I heard small feet running on marble. Fast and light and more than one pair. And then a little voice, high and happy, calling out a word that turned my blood to ice. "Mommy!" It was not calling for me.Chapter 66 – DamienI was in the doorway of the dining room, watching everything play out piece by piece: the broken plate, the stain on the floor, Kayla’s wet cheeks already dried by Maria’s shoulder. Kade who was furious a moment ago was eating from the food Maria brought.Elena was very still. She was a few feet from the table and a smear on her apron. Her hands hadn’t moved from her hands and I recognized it for what it was: it was the stillness that people used when they wanted to hide how badly they had been affected by whatever happened.I should have consoled her with some kind words but I didn’t. The words were drowned by the pressure that had been swirling in my chest since the gala. It finally chose now to erupt."Enough, Elena."She turned. "Excuse me?""Stop this charade at once." My voice was low but completely laced with venom and hurt that had been looking for a target. “ Do you think one breakfast would restore everything that you broke? You abandoned them for years
Chapter 65 ElenaThe dinning room was bright with the morning light that entered through the window. I had thought about this moment for so long, I started hearing my blood pumping. I pictured them eating the meal and eventually giving me a smile.I set the plates gently, bending and whispering to each of them. "I made these for you. I hope you like them."The pancakes had dark edges. I noticed it at the store but told myself it was no big deal. Kayden looked at his plate without zeal and my heart dropped a bit. Kade poked his with his fork and turned it over.A disgusted ire distorted his face. "They look funny."There was humor in my voice. "I know they look darker but they might taste better than they look.Kayden was having none of it. “Mummy Maria makes them better."My smile faltered, but it still remained on my lips. "Then maybe you can teach me how she likes them."Kade shrugged and said nothing. He didn’t refuse; I took it as a small
Chapter 64 ElenaI woke before everyone and spent the twilight hours of the day thinking about everything that was wrong. I had argued, pushed and insisted, rather than making things better it made them worse. I needed to them see me act as their mother. I had spent so much time trying to convince them that I never contemplated that my actions and words were in opposite directions.I would stop asking them to believe me and start giving them things to remember. I should start small and see where it goes. There was a lot to do before I could beat Maria but this morning could be the start of that race. I rose up, wore a simple dress, tied my hair back and went downstairs. The kitchen was in full flow already. Mrs. Hale was directly two maids when I entered. Her face perfectly still when she saw me. "I'd like to prepare breakfast for the children," I said."The kitchen is for staff, madam."I looked around. “I’m not asking to live here or
Chapter 63 ElenaI hadn’t slept since the incident. Every time I closed my eye, I could hear the recording starting over and over again, the sound of my voice coming alive and growing to fill up the ballroom as every eye turned towards me. I had told myself that the recording wasn’t true, it must have been doctored but I wasn’t so sure about that stance when morning found me on my bed.I moved to the dressing table and began grooming my hair. The door opened and Kade came in, already dressed for school. My heart was filled with warm that he had come to me. The warmth gave way to trepidation when I saw the glint in his eyes. He hadn’t taken another step further. "Everyone knows now," he said.I lowered the brush. "What does everyone know sweetheart?""Everyone heard what you said. Mummy Maria told us. She said you never wanted us and wished we were never born." His voice was flat, as he obviously tried to bury the hurt he was feeling. My fingers clutche
Chapter 62 – DamienThe garage was heavily laden with the greasy smell of oil as I stood beside Elena’s car with my hands in my pockets. They were only in there because I didn’t trust they would remain still.Tomas had spent the last thirty minutes under the car, when he finally rolled out, his face told me all I needed to know.“The lines were cut. It was a cut thick enough to make the brakes failed when she had gotten some miles in.”I asked to repeat it again though I heard him clearly the first time."Someone cut the brakes. There is no planet this wasn’t an accident."I could hear my blood pumping as I remembered the black cat with no headlights almost ran her down if it weren’t for Marcus quick reflex."Do you have any idea when this was done?""I can’t say but it should pretty close because the brake fluid is pretty much intact.""Photograph everything and this is be
Chapter 61ELENA I saw Damien. Standing exactly where I had left him. Very still. His face was white. His eyes were on me. I could not read them. I could not read anything.I saw Theo. He had pushed out from the crowd near the stage. He was coming after me, fast, his face worried. And I saw Luca grab his arm.Luca held him. Hard. Pulled him back. Said something in his ear, quick and sharp. I could see his mouth move. Don't. Not here. Everyone's watching.Theo pulled. Luca held. Then Theo turned his head and looked at him. Just looked. I do not know what was in that look. But Luca's face changed. His hand loosened. He let go.And then they were both coming. Theo first. Luca right behind him.I did not wait. I pushed through the doors and out.The hall outside was long and empty and full of mirrors. I saw myself in all of them as I ran. A woman in a dark blue dress with her hair coming down and her face wet. Running and running. I did not know
