Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Peachy
When I got back to the estate that day, the living room was a war zone.

Father was arguing loudly with Mother. My oldest brother sat nearby, smoking. Chloe was curled up in the corner of the couch, eyes swollen from crying.

The second I walked in, all eyes shot to me.

"Aurora!" Father bolted up. "What the hell kind of spell did you put on that Vitiello boy?"

I frowned. "What do you mean?"

"We just called Don Vitiello to call off this marriage." Mother's voice shook. "And that bastard Marcello threatened that if he doesn't marry you, he'll rip up the peace treaty and start a war!"

My heart sank.

"Don Vitiello was so mad he snapped a golf club in half!" Father's face was beet red. "He said Marcello must have lost his mind over you!"

"I didn't—"

"Enough!" Chloe suddenly stood up, tears in her eyes. "Aurora, how long are you going to keep acting?"

I turned to her. It was the first time she yelled at me directly.

"You said you wouldn't fight for anything. Said we'd stay out of each other's way. And then what?" Her voice was crying but clear. "Now you took my fiancé. You took everything that was supposed to be mine!"

"Chloe, you know that's not what happened..."

"No? Then what happened?" She sneered. "Every mob dinner, you wore slutty dresses! You shoved your body in Marcello's face!"

I froze. "When did I ever—"

"And your bike!" She kept screaming. "You know Marcello likes thrills, so you sped around in front of him on purpose!"

"Are you crazy?" I finally snapped. "What do my clothes have to do with you? What does my bike have to do with you?"

"What does it have to do with me? He's my fiancé!"

"Then go fight your fiancé!" I sneered. "You're too scared to blame the powerful Marcello, so you bully me because I have nobody backing me. You're just a coward picking on the weak!"

Chloe went pale, trembling all over.

"How... how could you say that? I treated you like a sister..."

"Sister?" I scoffed. "A real sister defends me. She doesn't point fingers."

"Aurora!" My brother finally spoke. His voice was low and furious. "That's enough!"

I turned to him. A wave of sorrow hit me.

Since I got back, every time there was a fight, he always took her side.

"Enough?" My voice started to shake. "Enough of what? Since this whole mess started, has anyone here said one fair word for me?"

The living room fell dead silent.

"Have you?" I looked around at my so-called family, my heart bleeding. "You all swore I seduced Marcello. But did anyone ask me for the truth? Did anyone believe me, even once?"

"Aurora, what's done is done—" Father tried to speak.

"Shut up!" I cut him off. "You already had your answers! To you, I'm just the wild brat from the slums. Born to use cheap, dirty tricks!"

"We didn't think that—" Mother argued.

"No?" I sneered. "Then why did you blame me from day one? Why did no one stop to think that maybe, just maybe, Marcello made his own choice?"

"Because deep down, you think Chloe is your real daughter, and I'm just an outsider!"

Everyone froze.

Chloe covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face.

"Am I wrong?" My voice grew hoarse. "Sixteen years of love matters more to you than blood. I get it. But I have my pride too. I will never apologize for something I didn't do!"

"Enough!" My older brother bolted up and marched over to me. "Aurora, I don't care what the truth is, your attitude right now really disappoints me!"

"Disappointed?" I looked up at him. "Brother, what are you disappointed in? That I didn't get on my knees and beg for forgiveness? That I didn't just swallow a crime I never committed?"

"I'm disappointed you're so selfish!" His voice thundered. "Chloe gave sixteen years to this home! She dedicated her youth to this family! And the second you come back, you snatch everything away from her!"

"Snatch what away?" I hissed. "What did I take that actually belonged to her?"

"Her fiancé! Her status! Her future!"

"Those were never hers!" I roared. "If she were a real Russo, if I had never existed, then yes, they'd be hers! But I do exist! I am the real Russo blood!"

Smack!

My brother's slap landed hard on my face.

The sheer force made me stumble back. Half my face swelled up instantly.

The living room was dead silent, save for Chloe's sobbing.

I slowly raised my hand, touching my burning cheek, and looked at my brother.

Not a shred of regret in his eyes. Only rage.

"You shouldn't treat Chloe like that," he said coldly. "No matter the reason. You just don't."

I nodded. The last ounce of warmth in my heart died out completely.

"I get it." My voice was terrifyingly calm. "In your hearts, I'll never be family. I'm just an accident. A nuisance. An intruder threatening your precious daughter's throne."

"Aurora—" Mother tried to speak.

"Save it." I turned toward the stairs. "I understand perfectly."

"Wait." My brother spoke from behind me. His tone dripped with disgust. "Aurora, I want you to remember one thing."

I stopped. I didn't look back.

"Our family doesn't have a daughter like you."

Julian looked sharp in his tailored suit, his coffee mug warm in his hand as always. "Senior Prosecutor in D.C." He placed his transfer papers on the table. "I start next month."I nodded, showing no surprise. He earned it. The man had ambition, skill, and principles. The legal side needed men like him. "Congratulations," I raised my mug. "Prosecutor Julian."He gave a bitter smile. "Aurora, you know what I want to say.""I know." I put the mug down. "But there's no need."Julian looked at me, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes. "If I hadn't backed down back then... if I hadn't agreed to the switch... what would have happened?"The question hung in the air for a long time. I looked out the window at the Detroit streets, the familiar rundown buildings, the slums where I once lived. "'If' is a word for losers." I smiled slightly, raising my mug to clink his. "The past is gone, the future isn't promised, we only have today.""And today, the streets of Detroit and Chicago belong

"Let them in." I slammed a grease-covered wrench onto the metal workbench. The screech of wheelchair tires scraping against the concrete floor echoed through the auto shop. The two heavily armed guards outside lowered their SMGs and stepped aside. The roller door slowly rolled up, letting the blinding sunlight flood into the dim garage. The wheelchair rolled over the greasy concrete, making a dull, struggling squeak. I looked up and saw Chloe pushing Marcello in his wheelchair at the entrance. The former mafia prince, who once kicked down estate doors with total arrogance, was now slumped in a custom wheelchair like a pile of rotting meat. Chloe looked terrifyingly gaunt, her eyes hollow. She didn't look anything like a mafia princess anymore. The haute couture she used to treasure was long gone, replaced by a cheap, threadbare coat. Her withered face was ashen, and her once-proud neck was completely bowed. "Aurora." Chloe’s voice shook. "We need to talk."I dropped the wren

Chloe's bridge-jumping stunt turned both families into the biggest joke of the underworld. As the fallout from her little show spread, the paper-thin illusion of their power was completely shredded. I didn't give them a second to breathe. I ordered a total lockdown on their dark web trading channels and secretly severed their last few weapon and vehicle smuggling lines. I even paid off key middlemen to tank their remaining legitimate logistics network. I sat in my office, listening to Rico's latest report. "Donna, per your orders, we cut off their three main weapon supply chains." Rico placed the file on my desk. "The Vitiello family's cash flow is down 70%.""Good." I flipped through the report. "How are the rival factions reacting?""The Irish, the Russians, and the cartels down South are all getting restless." Rico sounded slightly thrilled. "They smell blood in the water."I put the file down and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window. Night fell, and the neon lights of C

"Here's your care package." I slid a manila envelope across the table. "That's the Irish mob's operational plan for next month."Julian took the envelope and nodded. "Your intel is as sharp as always."This gray-area collaboration between us had been going on for over half a year. He needed leads to fight crime; I needed to wipe out my rivals. We both got what we wanted. No debts. "Let's go." I stood up. "That's all for today."As we walked out of the coffee shop, Julian suddenly stopped. "Aurora, something's happening on the overpass ahead."I followed his gaze. A figure was standing on the outside of the bridge railing, ready to jump at any second. "Damn it." I cursed and sprinted toward the bridge. Julian was right behind me. By the time we reached the bridge, the person already had one foot off the edge. It was a woman in an expensive Chanel suit, but her hair was a mess and half her makeup was smeared. "Don't come any closer!" she screamed hysterically. "Stay away!"I st

"This signature on your fire permit is wrong. Your club is shutting down today." The fat inspector from City Hall slapped the seal hard on my bar. I sat on a barstool, slowly blowing out a puff of cigar smoke. "This paper was legal yesterday, but suddenly it's wrong today. Who gave you the balls to come messing around on my turf?" I glared at him coldly. The fat inspector wiped his sweat, pretending to stay tough. My fingers slowly slipped toward the holster at my waist. Just then, a slender hand pressed down on the seal. "The signature looks perfectly legal to me. Mr. Inspector, are you overstepping your bounds?"The fat inspector was about to snap, but when he saw the federal credentials the man flashed, his face turned white. He didn't even dare to leave a parting threat before scurrying away with his men. "The license issue is sorted."The man in the sharp suit pushed up his glasses and dropped a stack of files on my desk. I looked up and recognized that gentle face. Juli

Word travels fast in the underworld. Aurora didn't walk away with nothing. I carved a massive chunk of flesh right off the Vitiello family's bones. Soon after, Marcello threw a high-profile wedding for Chloe, who had just divorced Julian. Ironically, the golden girl I supposedly stole from him was back in his arms. "Boss, you have guests."I was in my new Detroit office, tallying the spoils of my takeover. The man who walked in was my oldest brother, whom I hadn't seen in ages. Along with my biological mother. Three years apart, and they had aged terribly. The scar on my brother’s forehead—where I smashed him—was still visible. My mother’s hair was half gray. "Aurora." My brother’s voice was hoarse. "How have you been?"I didn't look up, just kept flipping through the files. "Spit it out."They sat on the couch. My brother pulled a land deed from his briefcase. "This is a prime plot at the Chicago docks. Worth a fortune," he said cautiously. "Consider it compensation from the
