Chapter 2

Author: Peachy
"Elena, you're misunderstanding," Marco said, reaching for my hand. "This is all for our future."

I stepped back, pulling away from his touch.

"Our future?" I motioned to Isabella, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. "Does our future have a guest star?"

"Don't be ridiculous." His patience was wearing thin. "Isabella is helping. She knows the wives of three potential investors here tonight."

Isabella walked toward me, the bracelet flashing under the lights.

She deliberately lifted her wrist, making the diamonds catch the light.

"Elena, you should understand Marco's position." Her voice was sickeningly sweet. "Business is war. He needs all the help he can get."

Marco's mother nodded. "Isabella's right. Elena, you're always so emotional."

"Emotional?" I scoffed. "Do you have any idea what I've put into this family?"

Sofia rolled her eyes. "Here we go again. Every time you're upset, you bring up money."

"Money?" My voice turned sharp. "Sofia, those Louboutins on your feet? That Hermès bag you're holding? Who paid for them?"

Sofia snapped back.

"That was Marco's money! You just hold the purse strings."

"And you," I turned to Marco's mother. "Your oceanfront villa in Florida—I pay the monthly maintenance. Your private doctor, your driver, your living expenses—"

"Enough!" Marco cut me off. "Elena, this is ugly."

Ugly?

His company had just gone public and he thought he was the wolf of Wall Street?

I was the one who got him into high society.

I pulled every string I had to get him in rooms with the real players.

To protect his fragile ego, I always let him take the credit.

He had no idea that for his first big pitch, the client wouldn't even meet with him.

I had to make one quiet call to Tony, pull one of our family’s strings, just to get him in the door.

"Marco, let me ask you something." I looked him straight in the eye. "Without the money from my 'paintings,' without my support, where would you be right now?"

His face darkened. "Elena, are you threatening me?"

"Threatening you?" I shook my head. "I'm stating a fact."

Isabella laughed. "Elena, do you really think money is all a man cares about?"

She stepped closer, the bracelet practically in my face.

"Marco needs a woman who understands him. A partner who shines in a crowd."

She paused, her voice turning sharp. "Not some weirdo who hides away in a studio, painting her creepy little pictures."

Marco said nothing.

His silence hurt more than anything.

Sofia giggled from the side.

She pointed at the huge, red-and-black abstract painting on the main wall.

"Isabella's right. Your paintings are... something else, Elena. It looks like a crime scene. All that red… it's a bad omen."

"It is," his mother added. "I've been meaning to suggest you hang something brighter. All that darkness is just depressing."

My heart seized.

The painting was called Embers of Memory.

I painted it after my parents' funeral.

Every slash of red on that canvas was me bleeding out my grief.

It was my only memorial to my past.

I had told Marco what it meant. That it was to remember my "parents."

And now, he just stood there while they called it trash.

I looked at him.

He just frowned and said, in a placating tone, "Elena, maybe they have a point. The guests are important. Perhaps... we could put the painting in storage, just for tonight? We can hang it back up after the party."

Just for tonight.

Like a piece of garbage to be hidden away.

The ice in my veins began to burn.

For ten years, I had played the part of a normal wife. In that moment, I was done with the game.

I was about to snap back when my phone buzzed.

A message from the P.I.

[Ms. Moretti, I have the results you wanted. Found something... shocking.]

A video and a report followed.

I stepped aside and opened the video. My heart stopped.

One month later. From the top floor of the Moretti Tower, the city of New York sprawled beneath me like a kingdom at my feet. My kingdom."Boss, Isabella is handled," Tony said as he walked in, a triumphant smile on his face."Tell me," I said, flipping through a financial report."She was dumped by all four men at the same time. And each one is demanding she pay back what they spent on her." Tony held out a list. "Totaling three and a half million dollars. She's broke. Can't even make rent.""And the best part," Tony continued, "is that after Thomas's parents saw the photos, they put out a statement in the papers. Called Isabella a dangerous woman and warned everyone to stay away. Now, in high society, her name is a disease.""What's she doing now?""Trying to get a work visa for Europe. Wants to flee New York," Tony said, his voice full of glee. "But no company will hire her. Her reputation is completely shot.""Let her run." I waved a dismissive hand. "She won't have a good life any

Two hours later, Marco was on a flight to Mexico City.I didn't see him off at the airport. There was no need.I sat in my office at the estate, watching the entire thing on a live feed.Marco was practically carried onto the plane by two bodyguards, a picture of absolute despair. He didn't even have the strength to struggle."Boss, our associates in Mexico have him," Tony reported, walking in. "He's being 'looked after'.""Good. And his family?""They're packing." Tony pulled out a tablet showing the camera feed from the apartment. "They'll be evicted shortly."On the screen, Amelia and Sofia were frantically packing. All the luxury goods, the jewelry, the designer clothes—all being stuffed into suitcases."Where are they going?""Back to their old place in New Jersey," Tony said. "A 500-square-foot apartment. It's been empty for ten years. Probably doesn't even have hot water."I pictured them going from a Manhattan penthouse to a rundown flat. The thought pleased me."You should hav

"You can't do this!" Marco shrieked, his voice echoing through the room. "We're married! Half of everything you have is MINE! That's the law!""Husband?" I took the divorce papers from Tony and slid them across the table. "Sign."Marco looked at the papers, his hands shaking so badly he could barely hold them. He ripped the agreement to shreds. "I will NEVER sign!"I looked at the scraps on the floor and smiled. "Marco, do you really think you have a choice?"I clapped my hands softly. Tony immediately produced another file."This is the list of debts you owe the Moretti Group. Fifty million dollars. It includes embezzled client funds, fraudulent business loans, and all the money you scammed from Ms. Moretti over the last ten years," Tony's voice was cold. "Under New York state law, you can choose to repay it immediately, or...""Or what?" Marco's voice trembled."Or we can settle this the Old Way." My smile turned colder.Marco knew what "the Old Way" meant. His face turned ashen."El

That afternoon, I arrived at Marco's apartment building.I wasn't visiting as his wife. I was here as Elena Moretti, the head of the family. My six bodyguards moved with me, an aura of quiet lethality hung around them. The crowd on the sidewalk simply melted away.Even the building's doorman stood up straighter, looking nervous."Boss, should we clear the way first?" the lead bodyguard asked."No," I said, adjusting my black trench coat. "I want them to see exactly who's in charge."In the elevator, I looked at my reflection. The naive girl from ten years ago was gone. In her place stood the heir to the Moretti family. The elevator doors opened. I walked straight to our apartment.I rang the doorbell.Sofia opened it. The moment she saw me, the color drained from her face. Her lips started to tremble."Elena... you..." she stammered, unable to meet my eyes.I ignored her and walked right into the living room. My bodyguards fanned out behind me, securing the space.Marco was on the s

The next morning at 8 AM, I sat in my office. Three different phones were laid out in front of me.Each had a purpose. One for my inside contacts. One for the media. And one to directly threaten Marco's partners."Tony, I'm starting," I said, checking my watch. "Record every call. I want to hear every moment of his downfall."9 AM. On the dot.I dialed the first number."Mr. Johnson, good morning." My voice was cold. "I suggest you check your email.""Who is this?" Johnson's voice was tense."Someone who knows all of your son David's secrets." I clicked 'send' on my computer as I spoke. "The casino footage is in your inbox now. I think after you see it, you'll reconsider your partnership with Marco Ricci."Johnson was silent for a few seconds. I knew he was looking at the email.Just as I expected, his panicked voice came through. "Is this... is this real?""Of course it is. David owes me two million dollars." My tone was casual, like I was discussing the weather. "Mr. Johnson, I can

I got a text from Tony.[Boss, it's done. Marco Ricci's reputation in this town is shot.]The car pulled into the lavish estate in Brooklyn Heights.Ten years. I was finally home.Tony was waiting at the entrance, a dozen men in black suits standing behind him.As my car approached, they bowed in unison."Welcome home, Boss." Tony opened my door respectfully.I stepped out of the car and looked at the mansion I once hated. Now, it looked like a fortress."Tony, follow me." I walked straight to my father's old office.I sat behind his desk for the first time in a decade. Just as I settled into the leather chair, my phone rang. I put it on speaker."Elena! Where the hell are you?" he roared, his voice a mix of panic and fury. "What did you do? My party is ruined! My investors are gone! You did this!""I did," I said evenly."You come back here right now! Do you have any idea what you've done? Without those investments, the company is finished!" He was trying to sound intimidating, but
