You Can Have Him

POV: Vita

The first discovery was the money. Dominic had been sending millions of dollars to an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands. The name on the account was Elena Rossi.

My cousin...

The woman who lived in my house and pretended to be my closest friend. The second discovery was the poison.

My medical records showed traces of a synthetic abortion drug in my blood. It had been entering my body in small doses, mixed into my prenatal vitamins.

Dominic had been poisoning me. I already knew that the pregnancies had never been his. I had discovered that on the balcony, when I caught him with Elena.

I know he had lied to me when he said that he was ill and too tired to perform in bed, convincing me to get artificial insemination because he claimed it was the only way we could have a child.

What I didn’t know is that the sperm used on me had not even come from a proper clinic. According to the records, it had been bought from an unidentified homeless man on the street.

I did not know whether the donor had been tested for diseases or genetic conditions. Dominic and Elena had not cared. They only wanted to keep me quiet and stop me from asking questions.

He and Elena had planned everything together. They wanted their own children to inherit the empire while I remained unaware, married to Dominic, and legally useful to him.

Mafia law required Dominic to stay married to me for exactly five years before he could legally inherit my family’s empire. He had needed me alive, obedient, and married to him. But he had never wanted my child.

When I finished reading the documents, Lorenzo watched my face. He was clearly expecting me to break down.

I did not...

I smiled and held on to the documents as if my life depends on it.

“I need everything,” I said.

“Every ledger, every transfer, and every person connected to that shell company. I need evidence that can survive in court, not just proof the Commission can use behind closed doors.”

Lorenzo’s mouth almost curved into a smile, but there was no warmth in it.

“You are not planning to let the Commission deal with this quietly.”

“The Commission protects men like Dominic,” I replied.

“I am going to use their rules and the law against him.” I said firmly.

He nodded and hugged me tight, not saying one more word. His silence was louder and even more deadly, everyone knows that.

It took him eleven days to build the file just as I instructed. I worked with a lawyer Lorenzo trusted completely. She had spent years studying the narrow space where organised crime and ordinary law overlapped.

Together, we gathered the bank records, shipping documents, medical reports, and statements from two of the lower-level wives. At first, the women had been afraid to speak.

They agreed only after they understood that Dominic had not just stolen from the family. He had poisoned his own wife and used her body as part of his plan.

The evidence showed that Dominic had been stealing from the Marino family’s construction union. It also proved that he had been sending the money to Elena.

Every document led back to them, and there was no way they were getting out of this.

I filed for divorce that same week. This time, I used the courts instead of relying only on the Commission’s rules. I invoked the prenuptial agreement my lawyers had insisted on five years earlier, when I was still naive enough to believe I needed protection from the outside world.

I had never imagined I would need protection from the man inside my own home.

The separation of our companies and accounts went smoothly. The prenup protected my assets, and Dominic had no legal claim to the money or businesses I had brought into the marriage.

Our marriage is not yet 5 years, so I made sure he gets nothing from my family assets. I did all the arrangements before he even knows what I was planning. I played the dutiful wife while I secretly made arrangements to leave him and burn his entire world to the ground.

I handed the day-to-day management of my company to Sofia Whitmore, my most trusted friend and assistant. She was the only person in my life I was completely certain had never lied to me.

“I need to disappear for a while,” I told her. Sofia did not ask too many questions. She simply promised to protect the company until I returned, promising to do everything to help me.

I smiled, recalling all the times Dominic had tried to get her out of the way because she is not a good friend, according to him. I guess she was one of the few people he couldn’t but with money.

After handing over the day to day running of the company to her, I moved on to the last part of my plan that involved a man called Julian Costello.

Julian was the head of the rival Irish-Italian mob on the South Side. He was known for being intelligent, ruthless, and almost impossible to reach. He was also the man my father had originally wanted me to marry before I fell in love with Dominic.

I had never met Julian, never wanted to actually. But I knew enough about him, I knew how much Dominic hated him. I also knew that Julian was the only man powerful enough to destroy Dominic completely.

I had no intention of asking Julian for help, I just want him to destroy whatever is left of Dominic once I’m gone. That way, he would be too busy picking up the broken pieces of his life, too busy to search for me or try to force me back home.

I prepared a file that could ruin Dominic’s plans, expose his theft, and destroy his position within the Commission.

I sent it through a private contact arranged by Lorenzo. The file was delivered to Julian’s assistant, a woman known as Miss Castellano.

She ran Julian’s operations from behind a desk and was one of the few people trusted to speak for him. She is practically the face behind all his operation, no one knows the man behind these operations. All we have is his name, Julian Costello.

I included a short note with the file. I explained what the documents contained, how much damage they could cause Dominic, and what I wanted in return.

Nothing sentimental...

Nothing that revealed how much it had cost me to place five years of humiliation inside a single folder... Well, almost five years... Almost.

I signed the divorce papers and gave them to my lawyer to complete the process. Then I made sure Dominic would never need to see my face again.

He would wake up one morning, only to realise that his five years of lies and deceit had all been for nothing. He would wake up to the news that all his plans for the past years had all been for nothing.

Let’s see who’s the bigger fool...

I booked a flight under a name that was not mine. I packed one bag and hid my new address from Dominic, Elena, and everyone else connected to the family.

Before leaving, I made sure my company, accounts, and legal affairs were separated from Dominic’s control. Sofia had everything she needed to keep the business running. I officially handed control to her, leaving her to handle the fallout while I escape this madness.

From now on, I’ll just be the name behind the empire. My face and location would be a mystery. No one is allowed to come after me, no one.

I sent one text to Elena before I left the city. Just as I boarded the plane, I typed one last message to my cousin.

“He’s all yours Elena...

I hope you two burn in hell playing with my life and killing my babies.”

Then I trashed the burner phone in a nearby trash, and I left the city.

I did not look back...

I had no idea what would happen after I sent the file to a man I had never met. I only knew that I had handed Dominic’s enemy the first card in a game that would end with his empire in ashes.

I literally put the last nail in his coffin, and I love every moment of it.

POV: Vita I sat on my balcony one October afternoon, three months to the day since I had boarded a plane under a name that wasn't mine and left Chicago, and everyone in it, behind me.I had just finished unpacking the last of my boxes and setting every piece of furniture exactly where I wanted it. My new apartment reflected every part of me that five years of marriage had slowly sanded away. Every vase, every painting, every careful arrangement of white and grey and soft rose gold felt like proof that I still existed as someone other than a Salucci, other than a Marino heiress, other than a cautionary tale whispered about at Commission dinners.I was exhausted from the day spent decorating my new haven, but I was happy, genuinely happy, in a way I hadn't let myself feel in longer than I wanted to admit. I'd hired an interior design team and paid them a small fortune without flinching, because for the first time in my adult life, the money in my accounts belonged to no one but me. Sof

But he had only been waiting for a legal deadline.Five years. A clean succession. Then everything would be his."Does it matter who the father is?" Elena asked."Not really. Why would it? It's not as if I was ever going to touch her myself," Dominic said, with a quiet laugh. "I can barely look at her without thinking about her father's men putting a bullet in mine.Marino blood makes my skin crawl. I only needed her name on the paperwork long enough to make this legal, and to take back everything that was stolen from me."The phone continued recording, though I could no longer feel it in my hand. POV: VitaThey discharged me two days later. A nurse wheeled me through a private entrance so no photographer would catch the Marino heiress leaving the hospital without her baby.I did not argue about the wheelchair. I did not have the strength to argue about anything.Dominic had arranged for me to recover at a private wellness retreat upstate."Somewhere quiet," he had told me. "Somewhere you can rest properly, my love."He kissed my forehead when he said it. I nodded, and some small, tired part of me was grateful. At the time, I believed he was worried about me. I believed his gentle voice and kind words meant something.I was wrong. The nurse changed everything. She came to check my blood pressure before I left. My limbs feels heavy with whatever they'd given me.For a moment I didn't remember, and I wish it stayed that way. But it didn’t...I looked down...God, I looked down and saw it. I saw the dark stain soaked through the pristine white sheets, and my body remembered before my mind did. I felt empty in places that used to be full and heavy. The moment it clicked in my head, I almost passed out from the sheer shock. The sound that came out of me wasn't a scream. It was smaller than that, and worse, a broken, animal sound I didn't recognise as my own voice.“Oh God no...Not again, not me... Not again!” I cried. I pressed both hands over my mouth to stop it, because somewhere in my head, and instinct, so
