ELENA

Before leaving the house, I had thought carefully about whether I really wanted to confront the man sitting across from me now.

Truth be told, I wasn’t surprised to find him in the position I did. The woman I assumed to be his secretary looked annoyed that I had interrupted the massage session.

Meanwhile, his expression remained calm, as though it were perfectly normal to receive a massage from his secretary during work hours. He cleared his throat.

"I'm sure you didn’t come to my office just to look around," he said, clearly amused by my discomfort.

I straightened in my seat and met his gaze head-on.

"Can you tell me what happened between you and my late husband the day before he was shot?" I asked, keeping my eyes on him.

He looked taken aback, clearly not expecting the question.

"That’s between me and your late husband," DeLuca replied smoothly, refusing to give anything away.

It was clear he wasn’t going to make this easy for me.

"Here's some advice," he said, leaning forwa

ELENA I followed alongside their car down to an abandoned powerhouse. Inside, I was led to a room where a girl—or woman, rather—was tied to a chair."She the one?" I asked as soon as we walked in.They nodded."She is. We caught her trying to light the ship on fire," the guy standing behind her said, his gun aimed at her head. The woman struggled against the gag in her mouth. Something felt off—but I couldn't quite place it yet."What is it?" Deluca asked, stepping beside me."Something’s not right," I whispered, taking a cautious step closer."You sure?" he asked.I nodded."Take off the gag," I ordered. The man’s eyes widened slightly as he hesitated, then took slow steps toward the girl. And that's when it clicked."Stop!" I shouted.I drew my gun and fired, hitting his hand—the one holding the weapon. He screamed in pain, and I rushed forward, kicking the gun away from his grasp."Elena, what the hell?!" Lucas demanded from behind me."He was the one going to burn the ship. He kn

DELUCA "I heard there was a change in authority here," came a voice from behind me, and I fought off an annoyed growl as Detective Lawson stepped in front of me with a grin."News travels fast," I said calmly, taking a sip of my drink."It does—especially when it involves shady dealings like yours," he goaded, but I merely shrugged."I’ve told you to stop dreaming, Detective.""What man doesn’t dream?" he replied as he made to take a seat—but a voice stopped him in his tracks."Men like you, for instance," Elena Russo said, stepping past him and claiming the seat he was aiming for. He didn’t recognize her through her disguise and gave her an appraising look."A new whore?" he asked, turning toward her, but she made herself comfortable, crossing her legs elegantly."Look around you. Don’t mess around in a place where you’re not wanted," she said with a shrug. He did look around—and clearly didn’t like what he saw. We’d been here before, and still, this guy couldn’t take a hint. How th

ELENA "The kids miss you."I startled at the sound and turned sharply to find Francesca walking up to me. I had been standing at a distance, once again staring at the orphanage. I never thought anyone would recognize me in my all-black disguise."You should consider being an assassin," I said, taking a seat on the hood of my car. He came to sit beside me."Nah, I’m not cut out for that," he replied with a soft laugh, and I smiled."How did you find me?" I asked, and he smirked."I saw you last time—twice. I just decided to go for it," he replied."So you had no clue it was me. Suppose it was an assassin scouting out the orphanage?" I asked, raising a brow."Not sure. Didn’t think that far ahead. Why don’t you come again?" he asked, and I sighed. I didn’t want to get into this topic, but it seemed I wasn’t escaping it any time soon."It’s not rocket science why I stay away," I replied. He shook his head slowly, that look of quiet disapproval I didn’t need."I know how much you adore t

DELUCA The next few days passed by uneventfully, but today, I finally decided to check up on Colton and see what he’d been up to all this while.I left the car behind—Lucas had insisted I go alone after the stunt he pulled with Colton last time. But I knew for a fact that he didn’t like the kid.Colton was a major pain in the ass, so I understood why everyone found him difficult. When I got to the condo where he lived, I paused to ring the dingy doorbell.“Who are you—Brother?” he asked, clearly surprised as he tore the door open to see me there. Not a smart move. What if I had been an assassin or someone sent to kill him?“Hey, Colton,” I said as I pushed past him into the house. I’d come in disguise so no one would know we had any connection. The more hidden his identity as my sibling, the safer he was.“You didn’t tell me you were coming—”“Of course. What the fuck is he doing here, Colton?” I snapped as my eyes landed on the one person I least expected to find in his home—calmly

ELENA The back of my hand burned with pain, but I felt it only as a dull throb."This will hurt," the doctor beside me said.I shot him a withering look."Get it over with," I muttered, and he did—soon tying up the hand."Don’t take out your frustration on the poor guy. Look at how scared you made him," Lucas muttered beside me.I gave him a look."What are we doing about this?" Deluca asked, and I turned to him in surprise. He was asking me? That was... nice."There’s nothing to do. Unless the contract is fake—and flawlessly fabricated, I might add," I said.Lucas chuckled, and Deluca shot him a glare."Then there’s really nothing we can do," I finished with a sigh."We could investigate. And we’ll all think on this before any decisions are made," Deluca said, also sighing. He looked exhausted—but don’t we all?"I’ll be leaving now. Need to clear my head," I said, rising to my feet.I gave them one last look before leaving the office.I passed by the casino and stopped in front of t

DELUCA This was not good at all. In fact, it was very bad—for both Elena and me. Definitely not in our best interests.Dante Morreti held a contract between himself and Lorenzo, Elena’s late bastard of a husband.According to this contract, upon Lorenzo’s death, this fool would own his half of the casino. That dead bastard never thought of his wife. What the hell was he thinking when he made this contract?Sure, it might have been forged—but it was flawless. And worse, everyone believed him.I needed to investigate this more. But if this fool tried anything with me, I’d kill him.I walked out of my office with Lucas, stepping into the hallway and then into the casino. There sat Dante Morreti, surrounded by a few low-level gang members, all engrossed in a poker game. The entire place went quiet—except for their table. Such blatant disrespect and disregard for authority.I gave Lucas a look, and he sent a bullet flying into the foot of the guy closest to Dante. The guy screamed in pain
