Gianna Ammassari
The evening felt like a dream, perfect, almost surreal. As I stepped out of the sleek black car, I caught my reflection in the glass doors and blushed at the sight. My emerald green Valentino dress hugged me in all the right places, making me feel like I belonged beside Nico Baldocchi—the leader of one of Sicily’s most powerful mafia families and soon to be my husband.
Nico stepped out behind me, and the sight of him stole my breath. He was dressed in a sharp black suit that fit him perfectly, accentuating his tall, broad frame. Every inch of him reflected the power and dominance he held as the man who commanded one of the most feared mafia families in Italy.
But it was his eyes that captivated me the most. Dark, intense, and always so unreadable, holding so many secrets.
“Gianna,” he said, holding out his hand, his voice smooth and commanding, sending a shiver down my spine.
I took his arm, my fingers lightly brushing against his as we walked inside the chic restaurant. We were seated at a secluded table with a breathtaking view of the city below. This was our official first date since both our families decided that I was to marry him, an arrangement to bring together the two of the strongest mafia families in existence.
The flickering candlelight cast a warm glow on Nico’s face, making him look even more handsome. For a moment, I just stared at him, soaking in every detail.
He was damn fucking gorgeous.
“This place is perfect, Nico,” I murmured. Anything to break the silence. His dark eyes met mine, sending a flurry of butterflies through my stomach as he pinned me with his intense gaze.
“Gianna,” he began, and there was something about his voice that made my heart skip a beat. “There’s something I need to tell you.”
My smile faltered. “What is it?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. Nico squared his broad shoulders and leaned forward slightly, his gaze piercing into my fucking soul.
“I will give you everything a wife deserves—protection, loyalty, power. But I can't love you. Don't ever expect that from me.”
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. His words hung in the air like a dark cloud, suffocating me.
“What?” I managed to croak out, my voice barely audible. He didn’t flinch.
“I’m in love with someone else, Gianna.”
It felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me. I tried to steady myself as the room spun around me. My heart shattered into a million pieces.
“Who?” The question slipped out before I could stop it, my voice trembling. I hated how small I sounded.
“It doesn’t matter,” Nico said, his voice cold and distant. “What matters is that you understand where we stand. This marriage is a business arrangement, nothing more.”
Business arrangement. The words were like a knife to the heart. I had always known that our marriage was meant to unite our families, to strengthen our power. But I had hoped, prayed even, that there would be more to it—that maybe, just maybe, Nico actually liked me somewhat.
But those hopes were gone now, shattered by his brutal honesty.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, forcing myself to meet his gaze. “And you’re asking if I still want to marry you?” My voice was surprisingly steady, despite the storm raging inside me.
Nico nodded. “Yes.”
My throat tightened with the effort of holding back the tears that threatened. I had loved Nico for as long as I could remember, and now, just when I thought I was finally getting my fairytale, it was being ripped away from me.
But love was a luxury in the world I came from. I had duties and obligations, and no matter how much it hurt, I would fulfil them.
Nico reached into his pocket, revealing a small velvet box holding a stunning diamond ring. Then, to my surprise, he stood and moved around the table, lowering himself onto one knee. My breath caught in my throat as he looked up at me, the ring gleaming between his fingers.
“Gianna Ammassari,” he said, his voice steady and emotionless, “Will you marry me?”
Tears blurred my vision. This was the moment that could change everything. The truth was laid bare in front of my eyes to see, and I could easily make the right choice and free myself from an eternity of hell.
Yet I didn't. I couldn't.
“Yes, Nico,” I whispered, my voice catching in my throat. “I’ll marry you.”
He slid the ring onto my finger, and for a brief moment, our eyes met. I searched for something—anything—that would show he felt more than just duty. But there was nothing. He rose to his feet, and as he did, I realized that my heart was shattering, piece by piece.
“Thank you, Gianna,” he said quietly.
But there was no warmth in his voice, no affection. Just the cold, hard truth that our marriage would be nothing more than a contract. I would be Mrs. Nico Baldocchi, the wife of the invincible heir to the Baldocchi legacy.
But I would never have his love.
And yet, as I looked into his eyes, I realized I would do it all the same. Because I loved my family. And because even if I could never have his heart…
I would still always love him…
Gianna“Thank you for signing the papers,” Diego smiled politely as I handed him the documents he needed my signature on the next day. “Once these are verified, we will start with the process of transferring Signor Baldocchi’s assets to you.”“I really don’t care,” I muttered glumly.“Well, I am just doing my job and keeping with that, there was something else Nicholas wanted me to give you,” he said. I frowned at him, and something about the way he looked at me told me this can’t be good.“Wh…what is it?” I asked. Diego took a deep breath and then pulled out another envelope, handing it to me.“What is it?” I repeated, frowning at the envelope.“It’s…” Diego mumbled. “It’s…divorce papers. Already signed by him.” I froze, my fingers tightening around the envelope as if gripping it harder could somehow make the words inside disappear.“Wh…what?” I stammered, my voice barely above a whisper. My hands shook as I held the envelope, and I felt my legs starting to shake.Diego shifted uncom
GiannaMaximus looked like he had seen a ghost. He blinked at me, opened and shut his mouth multiple times, and ran his fingers through his hair.“Uh…You’re pregnant?” he mumbled.“Yes. Why is that so surprising? I was and still am married to Nico…he’s my husband…” I said, sounding way bitter than I intended to.“No…No, I meant…” he shook his head and took a deep breath before settling back with his confident, determined self. “I just…I am not sure why I reacted that way. But Gianna…I am so sorry…I really am. You shouldn’t have to go through all this.”“Well, now you know,” I hissed. “My life is going to shit, and I really don’t have it in me to deliver what you expect me to deliver to keep up with Bellavanti’s standards. I am no longer who you met three months ago, Maximus.”Maximus gave me a look before taking my hand and dragging me to the couch in the corner.“Wh…what are you doing?” I demanded. “Maximus, let me go!”“Just sit down…that’s all,” he said, his voice gentle enough fo
Sharp at eight next evening, I waited for Gianna to meet me. I had, of course, booked a private dining room and was now waiting anxiously for her to show up. I don’t even know if what I was planning to do would work. What if it didn’t? This collaboration was my only access to Gianna for the time being. I felt nervous and anxious for the first time in a long time. The last time I felt this nervous was when Drago found me fighting in the streets and decided to place a bet on me.A bet that changed my entire life.“Signor,” I shook my head and turned to the door, and the manager stood outside, wearing that fake, polite smile. “I have Mrs. Baldocchi for you.”He moved aside and…there she stood. She wore a simple white dress that looked way too loose on her shrinking frame. And yet she was still gorgeous. Absolutely breathtaking.“Thank you,” Gianna murmured to the guy who walked away, shutting the door behind him. She glanced at me and I gave her a smile, walking over to pull out the chai
MaximusI watched as Gianna gave me a strained smile before walking out. Seeing her after almost six weeks was both a relief and a shock. For the past month, I have been trying to reach out to her, but it has been fruitless. She was gone.I couldn’t reach her by phone, or anyway. I visited her home, but it was left abandoned. She was not there. I had tried to talk to Leonardo, but he had simply dismissed me. That guy had an ego the size of a mountain, and it annoyed my guts, but I held back. Because he was Gianna’s brother and she loved him.But I knew Nico was gone. I made sure of it when I threatened to hurt Gianna. And from all the info I have received so far, he has been gone a long time now and was nowhere to be found. Even my men couldn’t find him, which was worrisome because my idea was to eliminate him once separating him from Gianna. I knew Nico well enough to be sure he wouldn’t leave by telling her the truth. He’d never want her to worry. Fool that he was, he’d rather make
Gianna“You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to,” Teresa muttered as the driver pulled into the parking lot of Bellavanti. It feels like an eternity since I was last here.“No, I need to do this,” I sighed. “I owe Maximus an explanation. That’s the least I can do, especially if I am to quit.”“Are you sure about that? This was your dream project,” Teressa asked, her face all constricted with sympathy for me.But I was getting used to that look now. And honestly, what could I expect? I was a knocked-up woman whose husband somehow disappeared. Not divorced…not widowed…just left alone. There was also a rage building inside me that I knew I needed to channel somehow. Because as much as I loved Nico and deep in my soul I knew there must be a reason why he left like that, I was pissed at him.Fucking pissed.“I…I don’t have anything left in me, Tess,” I whispered. “And whatever I do have, I want to pour into this little one inside me. Believe it or not, I am both the father and the
Gianna“I’m really not interested,” I said dismissively. “I don’t care about his money.”Rossi’s expression didn’t falter. “I understand, but I must ensure these matters are handled properly. That’s all I’m here to do.”“Plea…”I opened my mouth to protest, but Leo placed a hand on my shoulder and shook his head.“Just listen to him, Gi. It won’t take long,” he said. I sighed and nodded, setting my fork aside.“Fine,” I grimaced.“We will let you guys be,” Amara muttered, glancing at Leo, who nodded.Once Leo and Amara left the dining room, we settled into the living room. Caelian remained standing silently, watching, while Rossi took a seat across from me and placed a neat stack of papers on the coffee table.“I’ll need Signor Caelian to stay as well,” Rossi added just as Caelian was starting to walk out.“Me?” he frowned, and Rossi nodded. Caelian gave me a look before moving to sit beside me.Rossi opened his briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of papers, the crisp rustle of the
