The air in the kitchen felt heavy, the tension thick enough to cut through.

“No one? Really?” I shouted, my eyes darting around at the motionless staff. “You’re all just going to stand there and not do anything?”

I turned my glare to the nearest chef, my chest heaving, desperation evident in my every word. “What is the matter with all of you? Are you afraid of him? Afraid of what? He’s just a man!”
