The man at the altar

I stared up at him from the cold floor, my mind completely numb. This could not be happening. The man looking down at me in an expensive dark suit, radiating pure danger, was Liam. The same gentle, sweet guy who used to carry my books in high school. The boy who brought me soup when I was sick, who held my hand softly under the porch light, and who I left broken and waiting at the church altar four years ago.

"I said get out," his cold voice echoed through the dim room.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Terrified that he was talking to me, I scrambled back onto my bare knees, trying to stand up and run down the dark hallway.

"Not you, dumb ass," he barked, his sharp tone cutting through the air like a whip. "The rest of you, get out"

The remaining guards, girls, and wealthy guests did not wait for a second warning. They practically tripped over themselves in a desperate rush to leave the lounge, slamming doors behind them until the massive room fell into absolute silence.

I stood there, alone in the middle of the purple neon lights, suddenly hyper aware of my own skin. The tiny, ridiculous strings of fabric wrapped around my wide hips and full chest felt practically invisible under his heavy gaze. I pulled my long hair over my shoulders, trying to cover my body, my cheeks burning with a hot wave of intense shame.

"Liam?" I whispered, my voice trembling so badly it barely made a sound. "Is that really you?"

He stepped closer, towering over me until his shadow completely swallowed my frame. Up close, his dark eyes were completely dead, devoid of any of the warmth I used to know.

"Shut up," he said flatly.

I snapped my mouth shut, taking a small step back until my heels hit the edge of a velvet sofa.

"Did you run away from me for this, Kate?" he asked, his gaze sweeping slowly down my exposed body, resting on the raw purple bruises covering my back and thighs. "Did you steal from me and leave me at the altar four years ago just to wind up sold off as a cheap sex toy to a room full of dogs and illegal dealers?"

"No That is not what happened" I choked out, tears stinging the back of my eyes. "I had no choice back then, My family was falling apart, and tonight my father forced me"

"Shut it Kate, I didn't ask for an explanation," he interrupted, his sharp jaw clenching tightly. "And do not call me Liam. My name is Lorenzo. Lorenzo Moretti."

The breath completely left my lungs. I stumbled back against the sofa, staring at him in complete disbelief. "Lorenzo? No. That is impossible. Wait, you lied to me? The whole time we were together, you lied about who you were?"

"That's some high level of hypocrisy Kate, you lied too, stole my money and ran away, agreed to marry me only to run off," Lorenzo said, taking another heavy step forward until he was standing right in front of me. "I offered you a quiet future away from all of this. But you threw it back in my face on our wedding day. You broke your promises first."

I looked away, unable to meet his piercing eyes, my head spinning from the shock. My father had ruined my life, but looking at Lorenzo now, I realized I was trapped in something far worse.

"My father owes three million dollars," I stammered, my voice breaking as I tried to make him understand. "Worse he gambled it all away, He gave me to the guards tonight to clear his debt, I just want to do my job and leave please..."

Lorenzo let out a low, dark chuckle that sent a sharp shiver straight down my spine. "I know."

I lifted my head, blinking back my tears. "Of course"

"I am the one who lent him the three million, Kate," Lorenzo murmured, leaning down slightly so his mouth was inches from my ear. "I made sure every card game he played was rigged. I made sure he lost every single penny until he had nothing left to give me except you."

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. Cold sweat broke out across my forehead as the horror of his words sank in. "You... you did this?"

"I made a promise to myself the day you left me standing alone in that empty church, the day I returned home to see you'd stolen every penny I had in cash," Lorenzo whispered, his voice dark and laced with absolute malice. "I promised I would hunt you down, ruin your world piece by piece, and take back what rightfully belonged to me."

I stared at him in pure horror. The sweet, innocent boy from my past was completely gone, replaced by a ruthless mob boss who had spent four years planning my downfall.

Lorenzo reached out, his long fingers wrapping firmly around my chin, forcing me to look straight into his burning, possessive eyes.

"Go to the dressing room and pack whatever trash you brought here," Lorenzo ordered coldly, his thumb pressing hard against my lower lip. "You are coming with me. From today on, you are my personal toy. Nobody else in this city gets to touch you.”

The door flew open, and I scrambled backward across the mattress, pulling the top sheet with me to furiously wipe the sticky mess off my inner thighs. My skin was still flushed, my chest heaving, and my dress completely ruined.A man stepped into the room, holding a silenced pistol. I did not recognize him. He was tall, wearing a clean gray suit, with disheveled hair and a sharp jawline. He paused in the doorway, his eyes taking in my exposed chest, the rucked up dress, and the disheveled bed."I.... I what are you...." I tried to speak, clutching the sheet against my bare breasts."I am Marcus," he said, his voice completely calm despite the chaos downstairs. "Lorenzo's personal assistant. We are under attack by a rival....., gang. I need to take you to the shelter right now.""An attack?" I stammered, my heart slamming against my ribs. "Where is Lia... I mean Lorenzo?""Handling it," Marcus replied smoothly. He looked at my bare shoulders, then down at my trembling legs. He did not

I stared at him. The words hung between us. His fingers stayed firm on the back of my neck. The pressure increased just enough that I felt the warning in it. “Get up,” he said. I rose on shaky legs. My injured foot protested. He kept hold of my wrist and tugged me forward until I stood between his knees. Then he pulled harder. I lost balance and landed across his lap, one thigh on either side of his. The short dress rode higher. His hands settled on my waist and held me there. He leaned in and ran his tongue slowly up the side of my neck. The wet heat made me shiver. I pulled back a fraction. “Stay,” he murmured against my skin. The scolding was soft but absolute. His mouth returned to the same path, licking again, then closing over the pulse point and sucking. One hand slid up and closed over my breast through the thin fabric. He squeezed hard enough that I felt it deep. His thumb found the nipple and circled it until it s

I let go of his hair as if it burned. My fingers opened one by one. Fear had stolen the air from my lungs. I could not speak. The cold metal of the gun still pressed against the small of my back, and every muscle in my body locked. Lorenzo lifted his head from my breast. His mouth was wet. He looked straight into my eyes. The hardness in his face softened for half a second, almost gentle, before it disappeared again. His hands moved to my waist. He lifted me off his lap and set me on my feet in front of him. I stood there shaking. My skin still felt too sensitive. The cool air of the lounge touched the wet places his mouth had left and made me colder. I kept my gaze on the floor. He started unbuttoning his shirt. One button at a time. Slow. Deliberate. His eyes never left my face. I refused to meet them. I watched the fabric part instead. His chest came into view, hard muscle under warm skin, a thin scar near his collarbone I had never se

Lorenzo continued to tend to my injured foot in silence. As his thick fingers spread the cool ointment over my swollen skin, his eyes drifted higher up my legs. He noticed the yellow and purple marks left by my father's belt, along with the bloody scrapes on my wrist from Camila's nails. His face remained hard as a rock, but his jaw clenched tightly. "What are these?" he asked, his voice low and dangerous. "My father," I whispered, keeping my gaze locked on the floor. "He was angry when I did not bring home enough money last week. And the wrist... that was Camila." Lorenzo did not say a word. He reached into the small kit, scooped up more balm, and began to apply it to the other wounds on my legs and arms. His touch was firm, almost mechanical, yet he did not press hard enough to make me flinch. The contrast between his cold eyes and his attentive hands sent a confusing shiver down my spine. Once he finished wrapping a clean white bandage around my foot, he stood up, wiping his h

I stood in the doorway holding the black box long after the guard left. The silk ribbon felt soft under my fingers, almost too nice for whatever waited inside. My foot throbbed with every small shift of weight. The purple swelling had already started to darken around my toes.I carried the box to the narrow bed and set it down. The lid lifted with a quiet creak. Inside lay a short black dress. Thin straps. Soft fabric that clung when I touched it. It covered more than the strings from the club, but not by much. The neckline dipped low. The hem would sit high on my thighs. My stomach turned.I limped into the small bathroom and turned on the shower. Hot water hit my skin and made every bruise sting. I washed carefully around the marks on my wrist and the swollen foot. Soap ran pink over the raw places where Camila’s nails had broken skin. I stayed under the spray longer than I needed, letting the heat loosen the tight knots in my shoulders.Oh God,

Camila's nails dug so deep into my bruised wrist that I could feel my skin tearing. I stared at her, completely terrified, my mind going totally blank. My throat dry as dust. I swallowed the lump in my throat but still could not speak "Speak!" Camila demanded, giving my arm a sharp, painful jerk that sent a spike of agony straight up to my shoulder. "What are you doing in this house?""I... I do not know," I stuttered, shaking my head frantically as tears blurred my vision. "I just... my father owes him money. That is all. I swear!""Do not play stupid with me," Camila snarled, her face twisting into a mask of pure hatred. "Lorenzo does not bring debt collectors into his private villa.""Camila!" Lorenzo's deep voice boomed from the end of the hallway, sharp and impatient. "Get in here!"Camila froze. She let go of my wrist, turning back into the woman from a while ago Grace filled and composed “Coming” she called then looked back at me, her face turned sour as she sneered “Stay th
