LOGINFive years ago, Lyra was nothing but a disposable pawn to Dante Maroni, a ruthless mafia kingpin who shattered her heart and left her to die in a burning wreckage. Pregnant, broken, and betrayed, she faked her death and disappeared into the shadows. Now, the fragile woman he destroyed is gone. In her place stands Doctor Vesper—an elusive, ice-cold medical genius with lethal charm, an impenetrable guard, and a scalpel that decides life and death without hesitation. When a deadly neurotoxin strikes Dante, his empire is forced to beg the one underground doctor capable of creating an antidote. He has no idea that the masked woman holding his life in her hands is the same woman he abandoned to burn. But Dante isn't the only predator. Silas Vance, a powerful tech billionaire and leader of a rival syndicate locked in a generations-old blood feud with the Maronis, stands beside Lyra. Armed with wealth, technology, and firepower, Silas is ready to help her destroy everything Dante built. When Lyra finally removes her mask, the prey becomes the predator. Crippled by poison and crushed beneath the weight of recognition, Dante is forced to his knees, desperately begging for forgiveness from the woman he thought was dead. Then the stakes explode. A little boy with Dante's unmistakable dark eyes steps into view. Lyra has an empire to build, a dangerous past to bury, and a hidden son to protect at all costs. Dante must decide whether he is willing to tear his kingdom apart to earn another chance with the woman he threw away. But Silas has no intention of letting Dante reclaim her or leave with anything more than his life.
View MoreThe black slush pumping out of the man’s torn chest cavity told me he wouldn't survive the next ten minutes.
"His pressure is dropping to forty! Doctor Vesper, he's slipping into active shock!" my head nurse shrieked, her gloved hands visibly trembling as she tried to suction the dark fluid from the stainless-steel table.
I did not look up. My fingers remained perfectly steady as I slipped a titanium clamp deep into the bloody field, snapping it shut over a spurting artery. The frantic, high-pitched beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor filled the sterile bunker, keeping time with the storm rattling the concrete walls outside. This hidden, underground clinic was my sanctuary, a place where names didn't exist and only survival mattered. For five years, I had buried the weak, weeping ghost of a girl named Lyra under mountains of medical textbooks and cold anatomical charts. I had learned exactly how many seconds it took for a heart to stop, precisely where to cut to cause the maximum amount of pain, and how to look at a dying man without feeling a single stitch of pity.
The reinforced steel doors exploded inward, slamming against the concrete walls with a sound like a small bomb.
"Get out of my way! Where is the genius?" Viktor, a massive, scarred enforcer from the Maroni syndicate, stumbled into the room. His heavy wool coat was soaked with grease, rain, and fresh gun smoke. He lunged toward my instrument tray, knocking a tray of sterile forceps to the floor with a loud, clattering crash. "Fix him! If the boss dies tonight, none of you leave this basement breathing!"
Before his thick, calloused fingers could touch the edge of my operating table, a crisp, metallic click echoed from the shadows near the doorway.
Silas leaned casually against the frame, his posture relaxed but his eyes completely lethal. A matte-black pistol was leveled directly between Viktor’s eyebrows. Silas didn't blink. He didn't raise his voice. He just stood there in his custom charcoal suit, looking like a king who had casually walked into a butcher shop.
"Step back from her table, Viktor," Silas murmured, his voice a smooth baritone that somehow cut through the loud alarms of the medical equipment. "You're bleeding on her clean floor, and I despise messy people."
"Silas..." Viktor choked, his jaw going slack as he recognized the billionaire head of the Vance syndicate. The blood feud between their families had painted the city red for three generations, and finding Silas here, protecting a hidden doctor, was a tactical nightmare. "What the hell are you doing here? This clinic is supposed to be neutral ground."
"It is neutral," Silas replied, slowly stepping into the light, his eyes never leaving the enforcer's face. "Which means you don't threaten my doctor. Now, stand in the corner and shut your mouth before I put a hole in it."
I ignored the guns. I ignored the mafia war brewing three feet away from me. My focus was entirely on the man dying beneath my hands. Dante Maroni. The great, untouchable king of the city's underworld looked smaller than I had ever remembered him. His expensive Italian suit was ruined, hacked away by his men to expose a muscular, scarred chest that was now turning a sickly, mottled shade of purple. The neurotoxin was aggressive, eating through his nervous system like acid, leaving a trail of collapsed veins in its wake.
I picked up a long, thick spinal needle, drawing a pale blue fluid from a sealed glass vial. It was my own creation, a secret antidote I had spent three years synthesizing in this very lab. I held his entire existence in the palm of my hand. One push of my thumb, and his heart would pump again. A single step backward, and he would be a corpse before Viktor could even draw his weapon.
Suddenly, a heavy, blood-slicked hand shot out from beneath the green surgical drapes.
Thick, scarred fingers wrapped around my bare wrist with a desperate, crushing strength that defied his failing body. Dante’s eyes snapped open. They weren't the arrogant, mocking irises that used to look down at me while he used me as a shield against his enemies. They were wide, bloodshot rings of pure, unadulterated panic.
He stared up at me, his chest heaving violently as he fought for oxygen beneath the harsh glare of the overhead surgical lights. His pale lips parted, trembling as his gaze locked onto mine, boring straight through the thin fabric of my blue surgical mask.
"Lyra...?" he choked out, the word sounding like dry gravel rubbing together in the back of his throat. A single, dark drop of blood leaked from the corner of his mouth. "No... it's a dream. You're dead. I watched the car burn... I saw the ash..."
My wrist burned where his skin touched mine, a sharp reminder of the fire he had left me in five years ago when I was pregnant, broken, and begging for him to choose me over his empire. A wild, savage storm raged behind my ribs, but my face remained an absolute mask of stone. I didn't pull away from his grip. I didn't flinch.
I slowly leaned down, lowering my head until the cool, sterile material of my mask brushed against his ear. The familiar scent of his expensive leather cologne and copper filled my senses, but it felt like smelling an old grave.
"The girl you left in that fire didn't know how to use a scalpel, Dante," I whispered, my voice an icy, razor-thin line that cut straight through his fading consciousness. "Count backward from ten."
His eyes widened in a sudden, agonizing flash of total realization. The shock was so violent that his grip instantly lost its power, his heavy arm falling limply back onto the metal table as his eyelids fluttered shut. The heart monitor let out a sudden, continuous, terrifying scream. Beeeeeeeeeeep.
"He's flatlined! Total cardiac arrest!" the nurse yelled, reaching for the defibrillator paddles.
"Step back," I commanded.
I drove the long needle directly into the center of his chest, pushing it straight through the thick muscle and into the right ventricle of his stalled heart. I slammed my palm against the plunger, forcing the blue antidote directly into his core.
"Clear," I muttered, stepping back.
The monitor gave a sudden, violent skip. Then, a slow, heavy thud echoed through the room. Beep. Then another. Beep. Dante’s chest rose with a sudden, ragged gasp of air, his vitals slowly climbing back from the edge of the grave. I pulled off my bloody rubber gloves, tossing them carelessly into the biohazard bin without looking back at him.
Silas walked over, his heavy hand resting firmly against the small of my back, his eyes dark with an unreadable expression as he looked down at his bitter rival. "You saved him. I thought you wanted him to rot."
"He will rot, Silas," I said, wiping a stray drop of Dante's blood from my cheek with the back of my hand. "But he's going to do it while he's awake."
The blade of my scalpel caught the flickering emergency light as I sliced into the muscle of Dante’s shoulder. He didn't scream. He only bit down on the thick roll of sterile gauze I had shoved between his teeth, his entire body locking up like rigid iron as I pulled a flattened lead bullet from his flesh.Clink. The bloody bullet rattled into the metal kidney dish."That's the second one," I muttered, wiping the sweat from my own forehead with the sleeve of my ruined silk jacket. The air in the collapsed bunker was thinning rapidly. The oxygen scrubbers were wheezing their final breaths. "One more near the lumbar spine. If I miscalculate by a millimeter, you will never walk again."Dante spat the gauze out, his lips stained with a mixture of saliva and blood. His dark eyes, usually so sharp and predatory, were swimming with a feverish, desperate glaze as he looked up at me from the metal operating table."Do it," he rasped, his voice a broken whisper. "Cut it out. If I die on your ta
The explosion didn't make a sound inside the reinforced safety of the emergency tunnel. It was a vacuum of absolute, white-hot destruction that played out through the double-paned glass window of the blast door. I watched the shockwave rip through the laboratory, vaporising the remaining medical monitors and turning the sterile tile floor into a river of liquid fire. Dante’s towering silhouette was swallowed by the initial flash of orange light, his bloody hand slipping from the glass as the pressure wave blew him backward into the smoke."Mommy!" Julian shrieked, his little hands gripping my waist so tightly his knuckles cracked. He didn't see the fire—I had slammed my hand over his eyes the moment the button was pressed—but he felt the violent shudder of the concrete walls beneath our feet. "Mommy, what happened to the rain man? Where is Uncle Silas?"My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, but my face remained a mask of absolute, unyielding stone. As a surgeon, panic
Dante’s roar cut through the sound of the thunder and the crackle of the burning mansion like a physical blow. Standing on the shattered marble landing, I watched the man who had abandoned me five years ago charge into the gunfire. He didn't look like an untouchable underworld king anymore. He looked like a dying beast driven by nothing but survival instinct and raw, primal panic. Every step he took in the pouring rain seemed to drain the remaining strength from his towering frame, his boots slipping on the bloody gravel of the courtyard. Yet, his assault rifle remained steady, tracking the shadows of the Petrov mercenaries moving through the smoke."What is he doing here?" Silas hissed beside me, his thumb flipping the safety off his weapon. His fingers tightened on the grip until his knuckles turned a violent, stark white. "If he thinks he can claim this estate while it’s burning, I will bury him in the ruins myself.""He didn't come for the estate," I whispered, my analytical eyes
The weight of my son’s trembling body against my chest turned my fear into pure, freezing adrenaline. Julian’s tiny fingers clutched the fabric of my white linen suit, his hot tears soaking into my shoulder. I didn't blink. I didn't step back. The barrel of the silenced submachine gun pointed at my chest was less than six feet away, but all I could see was the tactical vest protecting the mercenary’s torso. My analytical mind, the part of me that had memorised every nerve, artery, and bone in the human body, instantly mapped out his vulnerabilities. He was wearing heavy body armour, but his neck was exposed just below the ballistic mask."I am going to count to three, Doctor," the mercenary said, his voice flat and muffled through the black fabric covering his face. He took a slow step into Julian’s ruined bedroom, his heavy combat boots crunching over the broken pieces of drywall and shattered plastic from a toy train. "Hand over the boy. If I have to take him from your dead arms, th
