Keane's favorite stuffed animal wasn't on his bed. Some of his favorite toys weren't on top of the dresser either. I checked his drawers. It was empty. No. Who took my son? Could the babysitter have kidnapped my baby?
I rushed out of the room and checked the nanny's room. Her wardrobe was empty. The suitcase she used to carry her belongings wasn't beside the closet either. Oh, my God. It couldn't be happening.
I dialed the woman's phone. Hearing the dial tone, I waited impatiently. But until the ringing ended, the woman didn't answer. Olivia didn't pick up after two calls. Shit! Where did the nanny take my son?
My phone vibrated as I descended the stairs. Reading the name, I answered immediately. “What did you do to Keane? Where is he!?”
“I'm at Channing's house, ma'am. Keane is with me,” she answered.
“Oh.” I was stunned. That was right. Maybe Mom asked her to bring my son there because I stayed in Cullen's room. “I'm coming.”
I felt relieved knowing my son was in safe hands. Thankfully, I was mistaken. I could have died if I'd lost Keane, too. Cullen had gone suddenly and left no message. I only had my son.
The guard opened the gate, and I parked the car in the front yard. I got out of the car and ran to the door. The butler opened it before I knocked. The man greeted me kindly.
“Where is my son?” I asked impatiently.
“Sorry, ma'am. You can only enter up to here.” The butler held out his hand, preventing me from entering further.
“What do you mean?” I asked in confusion. “This is my in-laws' house.”
“I'm not your in-law anymore,” Mom said. She walked down the stairs.
I furrowed my brow. “Mom? What do you mean?” I questioned.
“You and Cullen were married until death do you part,” she replied casually. “My son is dead. So you're not my daughter-in-law anymore. Go. You can stay at the Cullen house until you remarry.”
It was our wedding vows, but that didn't mean death broke our relationship. Cullen remained my husband even though he was gone. Keane united me with him and his family forever. His mother couldn't deny our relationship.
“I came to pick up my son.”
She scoffed. “Keane is my grandson. He will be Channing's successor. We'll raise him according to our family traditions. Go, Darcy.”
“What do you mean? Keane can't stay here. He must stay with his mother.”
“Do you think I would entrust him to a wicked woman like you? I accepted you as my daughter-in-law because Cullen begged me to. He said he couldn't live without you. Foolish child. Why would he marry a cheater?
“Even in front of his grave, you dare to gaze lovingly at your affair. What an ignorant woman. I don't want you using my grandson to control Channing's wealth. Get out of here, or I'll call the police!”
Realizing I was at a disadvantage, I lowered my ego. I couldn't melt my mother-in-law's heart if I were as harsh as her. I did it for my son. Channing was my family, and I had to be nice to them.
I reached over and took Mom's hand. “Please don't do this,” I begged. “Keane will cry nonstop if he doesn't see me for days. I'm not asking anything of you. I work and have enough savings. I can raise my son.
“Please draw up a letter of agreement. I don't care what it says. I won't demand any share. I beg you. I can't live without Keane,” I pleaded.
Mom smiled and pulled her hand away roughly. “Good. I want to hear that. I want you to know how it feels to be half alive when someone takes your son away from you. Because that's how I felt when you betrayed Cullen and acted like a saint asking for him back.”
“Mom?”
“I want you to feel the pain of watching your son from afar without being able to do much for his life. Thankfully, I love Keane and would never hurt him. Goodbye, Darcy. Thank you for bringing Keane into the world. You did a great job.” Mom turned around.
“No, Mom. Please don't do this. Mom!” I panicked as I saw her walking towards the stairs, ignoring me.
“Ma'am, you can't come in. Please leave.” The butler blocked me, but I dodged.
I looked around me. “Keane! Keane! Where are you, Son!? Mommy's coming! Mommy's coming for you!” I approached the stairs, but the butler stopped me. “Ma'am, you can't come in,” he insisted.
“Move aside! I need to see my son!” I tried to get past him, but two hands came from behind.
“Please come with us, ma'am,” the security guard said.
I stared at him in disbelief. Bridget must have told them to kick me out of the house. I turned my head toward the stairs. My chest ached. My son was so close to me, but I couldn't reach him.
My world was slowly collapsing with every step away from the house. I couldn't fight the two large security guards. They forced me into the car and closed the door.
Tears blurred my vision, but I wiped them away. My hands on the steering wheel were shaking, so I took a deep breath and let it out slowly to calm myself down. I didn't need to worry. Keane was my son. I would get him back.
Blinding light came from my car's three mirrors. I glanced at the rearview mirror. There was a car behind me that had its headlights on. Had he gone mad? Why would he do that? A person could get into an accident if their vision were compromised.
I put the right blinker on to signal I was slowing down and let the car pass through. The driver aligned his SUV, and a man yelled, "Pull over! Stop your car!"
My heart was beating fast at the sight of the creepy-faced man. The man sitting behind the steering wheel was even creepier. Could it be they wanted to rob me or hurt me slowly? Realizing I was in danger, I stepped hard on the gas pedal.
“Hey!” the man shouted.
I ignored the car horn and drove on. Fortunately, it was after work. The highway wasn't jammed. I drove as fast as I could so they couldn't follow me. However, some cars seemed to block my way and lead me somewhere.
“Shit!” I cursed, seeing that I was in a deserted place.
I looked back, and the car was still following me. Please, please, please. I was in a row of empty warehouses. No vehicles or people passing by was a bad sign. Why didn't I quickly notice they were leading me to that place?
Two cars were coming from ahead of me, and there was no opening to turn right or left to avoid them. I had to stop the car before we crashed. The three vehicles screeched to a halt, simultaneously surrounding my car.
My heart was pounding, suffocating my chest. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. My hands were tingling because I was gripping the steering wheel tightly. I breathed and hurried to get my phone from my bag.“If I were you, I wouldn't do that,” a man said through the front door glass beside me. His friends stood in front of my car, pointing their guns at me. “Don't try to call the police, and get out of your car carefully.”I swallowed hard. Who among my enemies had sent those people? Were they going to kill me or hurt me slowly? My whole body was trembling. Catching my breath couldn't help me calm down.“Get out!” The man beside me knocked loudly on the door glass.I unlocked the car and opened it. The man pulled my body impatiently. "What the hell is this!? Who are you!?" I scolded, trying to get up the courage.“You don't need to know who we are.” The man glanced at the companion at his side. The second man placed a piece of paper before me. “Pay your debt.”I scoffed.
Remembering my purpose for entering, I ignored the strangeness and approached the safe box. I entered the code and opened it. There should have been velvet boxes of various sizes and colors inside. What appeared before me was an empty safe.My knees buckled, but I braced myself. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. My hands trembled as I fingered the drawers. My vision wasn't wrong. The safe was empty. There wasn't a single jewelry box left.“No... It can't be happening...” I shook my head. “This can't be happening to me...” I looked around me.I understood what had changed. The limited edition of clothes, bags, shoes, and so on that were supposed to be in the room were gone. They only left clothes that were not as expensive as the limited collections.“Please...” I still had hope.I dragged my feet to another room, Cullen's closet. After opening the door, the lights turned on automatically. I took in my surroundings with a broken heart. It was empty. They left nothing.“No...”
Misfortunes happened in my life and ruined my reputation, but I never felt that humiliated. I had money. The savings account was mine, in my name. How could the bank let someone else control it without my permission? My best friend smiled as we parted, but I knew she was laughing at me and my stupidity. My face heated up, unable to hide my humiliation. I was getting into my car when friend after friend called me to cancel our appointment.I chuckled. It wasn't a coincidence. Did Frida tell them I asked to meet to discuss work? My laughter grew uncontrollably loud. Then the laughter turned into sobs, choking my chest. Gosh. Betrayal was painful.I headed for the bank and strolled inside, where the priority customer service was. A woman greeted me, but I passed her by. I knocked and entered the room.“I want to withdraw all my money from this bank,” I ordered the woman inside.“Mrs. Cullen Channing, good afternoon. Please have a seat.” She stood up and gestured toward the chair across fr
[Sinclair]I was content to watch that wicked woman lose one thing after another that she had. She should know what it was like to be at the lowest point in her life. That stupid man helped her last year, but not this year. Her in-laws were ruthless. She spared nothing, even taking away Darcy's rights. Her efforts to protect her property from her daughter-in-law's deviousness were commendable. Anyone would have done the same if they were in her shoes. However, I didn't expect that heartless woman to give up so easily. I wouldn't have believed my men's report if I hadn't seen it myself. The evil woman shifted a wooden box and climbed onto it. She couldn't end her life!My men held her hand, preventing her from going over the guardrail. They pulled her away from the place and brought her to me. The woman struggled, but the two men outmatched her.“What the hell! Let me go!” the woman screeched in annoyance.“I didn't expect someone like you to dare to die.” I glanced at the fence.Darcy
I hated local elections. All those candidates smiled in front of the camera, pretending to help the poor but blackmailing people like me for campaign funds. They thought I got all the money easily.“Let me handle it.” Enzo stood up and straightened his shirt.“No need.” I rose to my feet and walked toward the door. “The sooner they leave, the sooner the guests will be comfortable. I don't want to lose customers.”I waited for the elevator to go down to the ground floor while thinking of a sentence to counter the accusations of the police who came to my club. They didn't tell my men the purpose of their visit. So, I had to guess it myself.Arriving at the ground floor, I headed for the front door. After nodding to the security guard, I strolled into the room on the second floor. The waitress opened the door, and her colleague served food and drinks on the table.I sat down, awaiting the arrival of the troublemaker. I put an ice cube in a glass and poured scotch into it. I took a sip of
[Darcy]Today was a long day. The day that was both painful and shocking. I had a troubled family, but I didn't expect my father to borrow that much money without my knowledge. Why didn't he learn from his mistakes?I was the CEO of our family company. Twice, the company collapsed in my hands because he wasn't honest about financial management. How could he ruin my good name for his own pleasure? They must have used the money for splurges.I had little time and needed to save my son. The new problem came when I thought I was at the lowest point in my life. Was I being punished for my past sins? My eyes heated up, remembering all my crimes.“We're here,” Felicia, my boss, said. She opened the car door and gestured for me to get out on the same side.I complied. The building ahead of me was the nearest apartment to Sinclair's nightclub. That was the name of the heartless man. Felicia approached the entrance, so I followed her. Two men walked with us to the elevator.Felicia pressed the
Sinclair looked at me expressionlessly. He scrutinized my body from foot to head slowly, but I felt confident with my body. His eyes couldn't intimidate me. Although some parts of my body were chubby, I could make people look at me with admiration. The man stood up and walked toward the door. Felicia shifted, so I did the same. Sinclair left his office and walked towards the practice room. I took a deep breath, preparing to show him my skills.“Show her the movements for tonight's performance,” he ordered Felicia. My instructor nodded. She stood near one of the poles and prepared the opening pose. Sinclair pressed a button on the remote in his hand, and music filled the room. Felicia moved gracefully around the pole to the music.I watched her move by move and memorized it in my head. The curves of her fingers, hands, waist, and legs were perfect. If only she'd let her hair down, she'd look even sexier. No man could resist her charms. The music stopped, and Felicia stood up perfectly.
[Sinclair]My nightclub had many professional dancers. They chose the job because of their choice, a friend's invitation, or economic pressure. Whatever their reason for working at my place, they worked well and had many loyal fans. The HRD strictly selected them. Those women must undergo a complete physical and mental health examination before becoming a dancer at my club. I didn't want to get into trouble if she transmitted diseases to her colleagues or customers. Therefore, my club dancers were gorgeous, surpassing other clubs. They had good bodies and were very talented. The guests looked forward to their performances the most. As a result, my club was full on Saturday and Sunday nights.Yet none of them were able to give me chills. Some tried to flirt with me, aiming for Mrs. Sinclair Wyndham's position. No matter how sexy their dances were, I wasn't feeling it.Darcy was the first woman, my club dancer, who could arouse me. I didn't realize my pants were getting tighter because o
[Sinclair]It was crazy! It was pure madness! The evidence Darcy gave me wouldn't only destroy Sean's good name but also harm his company. I didn't expect the family's hands to be full of blood. I thought they did business with their tears and sweat.I didn't suspect that Darcy and I's closeness would help me bring down my unbeatable enemy. Conrad couldn't have found such strong evidence because they covered all traces of their crimes neatly.Damn it. Darcy was my family's enemy. I framed her father to ruin her reputation. If I used that evidence, I betrayed my brother. I should have avenged his death, not allied myself with that heartless woman.“Heartless woman. I don't even recognize her anymore after seeing her earnestly breastfeeding an unknown baby.” I combed my hair with my fingers.I glanced at my computer screen. Darcy must have gotten that financial data from her husband. What kind of marriage was she in to have such a big secret in her hands? I couldn't believe Cullen gave
Judy chose a restaurant in the hotel near her office. No one knew I worked in Sinclair's club, and I wanted to keep it that way. Therefore, I didn't mention my location and let her decide our meeting place.Getting a table at the restaurant wasn't difficult. Only certain people had dinner at such a fancy place. Judy had arrived first. Her bodyguard greeted me at the door and escorted me to the table.“Hi, Darcy, have a seat!” She greeted me cheerfully.I glanced at the bag on the chair beside her. “Hi. Is anyone else eating with us?” I sat on the chair across from her.“Um, yes,” Judy answered. “She went to the restroom for a while.”Her friend didn't go to the restroom. That woman must have been hiding somewhere, waiting for me to sit down. She knew I'd leave if I saw her here with Judy. There was only one person I knew would pull off that trick.“Please choose what to eat. I'll pay.” Judy handed me the menu.“Okay,” I replied.I ordered steak with barbeque sauce, grilled asparagus,
[Darcy]Sinclair left the room after talking to me. I took the opportunity to sort out my feelings. Crying would only make me weak. I needed to have a clear mind to decide what to do to get back at Bridget. My son wasn't sick because something was wrong with his body. Keane needed me. He missed his mother, who hadn't been beside him for two weeks. Separating us was Bridget's most evil act. It wasn't the same as separating her from her adult son.Keane was six months old and dependent on his mother. That selfish woman was so vindictive that she called another woman to be with my son. That other woman would never be his mother. Laura didn't love Keane. She loved money.I didn't care if Sinclair used the evidence or threw it away. I could spread it when I had enough money to pay for a lawyer. I only needed to work hard and use all my time to raise the money.“You'd better not work today.” Sinclair studied my hands as we ate breakfast.“I've been absent for two days. My colleagues will be
[Sinclair]Conrad was investigating who among my mother's friends had viciously slandered her. It would take him a long time because the incident had passed. Poppy Swan was one of the people I unfortunately suspected.I hoped I was wrong. I couldn't imagine that the woman who had treated me so well during those difficult times would hurt my mother. Not many people helped me get back on my feet after Dad passed away. Poppy bravely stood up to her husband, who disapproved of her supporting me.“Who is Joaquin Fernandez?” my mom's best friend asked. “I've never heard that name. Is he an actor?”“Are you sure you never knew him?” I repeated.Poppy smiled. “Sin, I know numerous people, but that name is unfamiliar.” She patted the back of my hand. Her demeanor didn't change. Her eyes, smile, and movements remained calm, but her palm was cold. I couldn't tell if it was the air conditioning or she was nervous. Surprisingly, I didn't feel guilty for asking that question.Poppy treated me like
[Darcy]I didn't wait for Taylor to stop the car. I unlocked and pulled the door knob. My cousin called my name, preventing me from exiting the SUV. I ignored her shouts and jumped out. Many reporters were at the entrance, but Scott helped me get past them. Unbelievable. Even though I was wearing sunglasses and a facemask, they could recognize me. The press was scrambling to ask questions. Fortunately, the security guards opened the way for me.“Boss won't like this,” Scott said.“He won't know if you don't tell,” I retorted.I approached the nurse station and asked about Keane. They refused to tell me any information about the baby. After I mentioned I was his biological mother, and Scott drew his gun, they shared his ward number.Taylor walked with me to the room. We took the elevator to the top floor. Keane was in one of the VIP rooms, the heavily secured place. I might be unable to get in, but I wouldn't give up.“You can't come in,” Joseph stood before me as I exited the elevator
[Sinclair]I followed Darcy with my eyes as the medics took her to one of the empty exam rooms. Another team took me to the room beside it. They checked my condition. As expected, my legs, thighs, and back were bruised from the impact of the water surface. The helicopter was too far from the river, but we had no choice. It was better to be injured than to die in vain. Scott, Neil, and the pilot were safe. That was my only priority. The insurance would help repair or replace the helicopter. So, the company didn't lose much.I suspected two major groups did it: Joaquin and Giovanni. Joaquin wasn't a coward. I wouldn't be surprised if he dared to challenge me after the incident at his house. The family was everything to him. He would protect them at all costs.Giovanni hated me because of a misunderstanding. He didn't want to hear my explanation and believed his men's confession. Unfortunately, I had no evidence to corroborate my statement. Therefore, he chose to believe his confidant.“W
The turbulence inside the helicopter was getting more intense. I refrained from screaming as the four men tried to remain calm. I gripped Sinclair's hand and the seat tightly.“Can we land on the helipad?” Sinclair asked.“I'm not sure because I can't control the chopper,” the pilot said.“It's best to put on a life vest now. We're on the water,” Sinclair suggested.“Can you fly lower? We can jump when we're near water,” Neil said.“I'll try,” the pilot answered. The man was talking to someone over the communication system. Sinclair told me to get my life jacket from under my seat. I complied. I let go of his hand before taking it. Remembering the flight attendant's instructions, I put on the jacket. My heart was beating fast as the helicopter spiraled out of control. The pilot told the people on the other side about the engine and all the details. They helped him by giving instructions on how to solve the problem. My stomach felt queasy because we had just eaten lunch. My head was sp
[Darcy]I saw the cut marks on his forearm and suspected he had other wounds on his body. But I didn't expect it to be that big. The wound on his right chest was far from the heart. I had no idea what it was.The big, more nasty scar was on his upper left shoulder. I saw the gunshot wound in the movie. His scar was worse than that. The scar didn't resemble the burn scar on my sister's face. What kind of life did he live?We slept together a few times, but he never had nightmares. He wasn't delirious either. I would hear it no matter how deeply I slept. A person who had so many wounds on his body would have trauma. How could his soul heal without a trace?“Mrs. Wyndham,” Scott called out, breaking my reverie. “Let's go to your seat.”“Ah, yes,” I said.Errol welcomed us and invited Sinclair to follow his secretary. Neil accompanied his boss while Scott looked after me. I strolled over to the row of seats under the canopy. I recognized all the guests. Some looked at me intently and sear
I had a bad feeling on the helicopter. It only got worse when I arrived at the venue. I didn't expect anyone to dare disrupt the event with such tight security. I should have known the tight security meant something.Joaquin couldn't have sent his men to attack me. He wasn't stupid enough to involve so many people in his actions. Criminals like us would attack guerrilla style and leave no trace. We were against dealing with the police.Darcy did the right thing by keeping quiet. She didn't scream hysterically like the other women near us. It was foolish of them to give away their position to the shooter. I looked for a place near us to protect ourselves.“Errol! Show yourself!” a man shouted as he entered the dining room. The sound of machine gun fire was close to us. Tableware broke, and the sound of objects falling to the floor deafened my ears. Darcy and I were under the table. It shielded us from the objects falling from it.The women screamed hysterically while the men swore. My
