Allesio’s POV

Rosa wasn’t good at hiding things from me.

She thought she was. She liked to pretend she was unreadable, a closed book with a locked cover, but I had spent too much time memorizing every page of her.

So when I noticed the way her shoulders tensed at the mention of the wedding, the way her fingers curled into her palm when she thought no one was looking—I knew something was wrong.

The problem was that she wasn’t saying a damn word about it.

I waited, watching her closely over the next few days. She still smiled, still talked about flower arrangements and seating charts, still rolled her eyes whenever our families made the wedding feel more like a business merger than a celebration—

But there was something beneath it. Something simmering just below the surface.

And I hated it.

I hated seeing her like this.

So after another dinner filled with yet another round of “this wedding is politically important” speeches, I finally cornered her.

She was standing by the window of

370Dante’s POV The whiskey burned as it went down, but the heat in my chest had nothing to do with the alcohol.I sat in the dimly lit study, an half-empty glass rested on the desk beside me, but my fingers tapped impatiently against the wood. I was waiting. And I hated waiting. The muffled sounds of celebration filtered through the speaker on my phone, voices filled with laughter and toasts.A party. Her engagement party. My jaw locked.Rosa.The name itself was enough to light a fire in my veins. My Rosa, my girl—the one who was supposed to be mine—was celebrating her upcoming wedding to another man.I gritted my teeth, rage simmering just beneath my skin. I had been patient for too long, waiting for the perfect time to remind her who she belonged to.And now?She had made a fatal mistake. She thought she could forget me. Thought she could move on, play house with Allesio fucking Castillo like I was nothing. The thought sent a dark chuckle rumbling in my chest. She was wrong. And

369Rosa’s POV The engagement party was grand, as expected. Both the Smiths and the Castillos didn’t do anything small, especially not when it came to solidifying alliances. The ballroom shimmered with golden chandeliers, and the scent of expensive champagne and power filled the air.Everything was perfect.Except for the fact that I felt watched.I felt a tickling sensation at the back of my neck, the way I’d been trained to recognize when someone’s eyes lingered too long. But I shook it off. Paranoia wasn’t a good look for a bride-to-be.Allesio stood next to me, his hand possessively resting on my lower back as he nodded at yet another guest. His grip tightened slightly as his eyes flicked down to me. “You okay?”I forced a smile and reached for my champagne flute. “Of course.”He didn’t buy it. Not for a second. Before he could press me for details, a familiar voice interrupted.“Rosa, you look stunning.”I turned to see Emilia, her belly just barely noticeable in the fitted silk

367Dante’s POV. They were whispering her name like a ghost.Rosa Smith. It was in passing, spoken under breath, in hushed conversations I wasn’t meant to overhear. Like people were too afraid to say it too loud, as if even the sound of her name might summon me into a rage. They weren’t wrong.I was in a Miami club when I heard it first. Sitting in the VIP section, a girl I barely remembered curled under my arm, sipping from my glass like she belonged there. I wasn’t listening to anything going on around me—until one of my men muttered something that made my blood go ice cold.“…Rosa’s getting married.”My glass shattered in my hand before I even realized I’d clenched my fist.Silence rippled across the table. Every man at the booth turned stiff, and watched me.I let the shards of glass fall from my fingers, ignoring the sting. “What did you just say?”Mason, one of my lieutenants, hesitated. Like he was reconsidering his life choices. Smart man.I leaned forward, voice eerily calm.

366Rosa’s POV I have never been the type to eavesdrop.Okay, that was a lie—I absolutely eavesdropped when necessary, and in this family, it was always necessary. But this time, I hadn’t gone looking for trouble. Trouble had landed right in my lap.I was on my way to my father’s office, intending to confirm details about the wedding guest list when I heard the tone. That low, clipped edge in my father’s voice that meant someone had just brought him bad news. So, naturally, I paused at the door.“…reliable informant,” a voice said from inside. “He wouldn’t come to us unless he was certain.”Silence. Then my father’s deep sigh. “And yet, what he’s brought us is nothing. Vague whispers of trouble? That could mean anything.”“I don’t like it,” the other man replied. “It’s too close to the wedding.”Wedding. My wedding.I stiffened.“The wedding is exactly why these rumors are being spread,” my father said, sounding unimpressed. “People are always looking for ways to undermine a strong a

365Rosa’s POV I had killed men without blinking.I had stood in rooms full of ruthless crime lords and never once let my voice waver.I had faced betrayal, heartbreak, and fought my way back from the wreckage. But standing in front of a mirror, wrapped in a cloud of lace and tulle, I felt my stomach do a little flip.I looked… like a bride.Like a woman on the verge of stepping into something permanent.“Holy shit,” Emilia breathed beside me, her hands clasped together as she stared at me in the mirror. “You look… ridiculous. And by ridiculous, I mean, so stunning that Allesio is going to pass out when he sees you.”I let out a sharp breath, pressing my palms against my waist. “It’s just a dress.”Emilia scoffed. “It’s not just a dress. It’s the dress. The one you’ll be wearing when you say ‘I do’ to your big, bad mafia prince.” She smirked. “And then, presumably, get ravished in later.”I groaned and smacked her arm. “You are actually the worst.”She just grinned, completely unboth
