Chapter 3

Auteur: Palma W
For the first few months after the wedding, Matteo rarely came to the main bedroom.

He was never rude and he never went out of his way to humiliate me. He was simply cold. In the morning he would ask the driver what time I was going out. At night he would leave the charity paperwork I had to sign on the table. Beyond that, we were more like two business partners forced to live in the same house.

At first I didn't care.

I was too busy watching the Rossi family.

I grew up on stories about mafia families. Brothers turning on each other over territory, uncles and nephews selling each other out for money, women used as bargaining chips in marriage pacts and alliances.

I assumed the Rossi family was the same, just better at keeping the filth out of sight.

But none of that happened.

Rosa remembered every child's birthday. However late Matteo got in, he went to the main house to look in on her first. After Bianca married, she brought Luca back for dinner every few days. Cousins fought over the last piece of tiramisu in the kitchen, and even the men who stood armed at the gate joined the family for a Christmas cookout in the backyard.

They were hardly law-abiding, of course.

The underground business, the fights over the port, the favors owed. All of it was there.

But in that house, nobody went without dinner for losing a match. Nobody got shut in a room all day for saying the wrong thing. Nobody had to prove they were better than another child to earn a seat at the table.

It was the first time I had seen a family like that.

For the first time, I understood that for some people, going home really was just that: going home.

One night everyone was in the dining room. Bianca was talking about her first charity event as a married woman, and a few of the younger cousins crowded around her to see the photographs.

I sat at the far end of the long table. Nobody chased me off and nobody made a point of freezing me out.

But when the talk turned to childhood, I had nothing to add.

They laughed about Matteo stealing his father's car at ten, and about Bianca being afraid of thunder and carrying her pillow to her brother's door whenever it rained. They laughed about the time Rosa was ill and the whole family crammed into the kitchen to make a truly terrible pot of soup.

They laughed loudly.

I laughed along with them.

But as I laughed, an emptiness opened in my chest.

I went up to my room before dinner ended.

There was a bottle of whiskey in the cabinet. I almost never drank, but that night I poured myself drink after drink. By the end, I couldn't even remember making the call.

When Matteo came back I was sitting on the carpet with my back against the bed.

He stopped in the doorway, his expression grim. "How much have you had?"

"No idea."

"Why are you drinking?"

"I'm happy."

I looked up and smiled at him.

"Your family is wonderful."

He didn't say anything. He came over, crouched down and reached for my glass.

I caught his cuff.

"Matteo."

"Yes."

"Why does Bianca get everything?"

He paused. "Meaning what?"

"She has a mother."

The second it was out of my mouth, the tears came with no warning at all.

"And she has you."

I was mortified, but I couldn't stop. The whiskey brought out everything I'd sooner die than say sober.

"She shoots well and someone praises her for it. She loses and someone keeps her dinner warm. She gets married and every one of you is happy for her."

I had his cuff in my fist.

"What about me?"

Matteo didn't interrupt.

"When I was 12, I played a passage wrong, and my mother threw the sheet music in my face. When Bianca was 16, she beat me by three points in moving-target shooting. I practiced until the skin between my thumb and forefinger split, but my mother only said a little blood was nothing. Once I cut my hair short. She didn't like it, so she had the rest cut off too."

Matteo's expression grew darker with every word.

"Why would she do that?"

"Because I had to win."

"Who decided that?"

"She did."

I laughed a little, but the tears only came harder.

"Before she died, she held on to me and told me not to lose. So I can't lose. If I do, what was her whole life for?"

The room was quiet for a long time.

Matteo took the glass out of my hand.

I thought he would tell me my mother was insane, or that I was.

He didn't pass judgment on any of it. He just sat down on the carpet and pulled me against him.

He moved stiffly, as though he'd never held a drunk person before.

"Serafina."

I rested against his chest and listened to the strong, steady beat of his heart.

"You don't have to be better than her to stay here."

I froze.

"What?"

"You don't have to beat Bianca." He lowered his head, and his voice was very quiet. "You get to sit at that table anyway. You're my wife."

That only made me cry harder.

Not because it was a beautiful thing to say. Because I had lived all those years and nobody had ever told me that before.

Not my mother.

Not my father.

I had never even thought it myself.

That night I cried until I had no strength left, and Matteo carried me to bed. I clung to his hand. When I woke the next morning, he was still beside me.

I looked at his face for a long time while he slept.

It was the first time I had ever been truly afraid of losing someone.

And from that day, the marriage I had schemed my way into stopped being only a trophy.

On the wedding day, the Vitale estate was busy from first light.Long tables were set up by the water and white flowers ran from the main house all the way down to the lawn. The band, the food trucks, the security team, and the medical team all arrived early. It was as lavish as ever. But there were far fewer guests than originally planned. No business partners squeezed onto the list for the sake of appearances, and none of the fuss about who came and who didn't that my mother used to care about so much.Only the people who truly mattered to us remained on the list.I put on the white gown. Before going out to the estate, I went to the hospital.Niccolo was still lying there.I sat down beside the bed."I'm getting married today."Nothing."You can skip it. Every guest already knows the groom hasn't woken up."I took out the old coin and waved it in front of his eyes."I'm taking this with me."When you wake up, you'll have to come after me yourself."As I spoke, my eyes reddened anywa

Ten days before the wedding, Bianca came to the house by the water alone for the first time and carried in a large box."What is that?""Things cleared out of a storeroom.""Your brother's?""Some of it."I frowned immediately. "Then take it away.""Look first."In the box were a red tablecloth, table settings, a few old wine glasses, and some things that were obviously a woman's.I picked up the cloth.I didn't recognize it.But it was almost the same red I'd liked to use in the Rossi dining room in my last life.None of which ever happened in this one.Once his memory came back, though, Matteo had gone looking for things like them."He says it would be a waste to throw them out," Bianca explained."I didn't ask for them.""I know."So I'm not bringing them for you to keep either."She took a bottle out of the bottom of the box."I picked this one myself. I'm taking the rest with me in a while."I looked at her. "Why are you giving me wine?""The wedding.""I thought you didn't want u

In the second month, Niccolo got better little by little. He was breathing on his own for longer stretches, and he was starting to respond to sound. My trust was now entirely separate from the family's assets. The roof of the house by the water had been repaired, and the title to the California property had been confirmed.I went to the hospital in the afternoons.Sometimes I read him the paper. Sometimes I said nothing at all.The wedding was set for the following month. The Vitale family asked whether I wanted to postpone.I said not yet. When my father heard, something complicated crossed his face."You're sure?""I'm not sure.""Then why not postpone it?""Because there's still a month."I turned to the next page in the file."Whatever the situation is in a month, I'll decide then."My father looked at me. "You didn't use to be like this.""Like what?"I smiled.Antonio confessed to everything. He had been taking money from the outside gunmen for a long time.Matteo publicly took r

On the third day of Niccolo's coma, I went home for a night's sleep.Nobody could believe it.Bianca stood in the doorway of the room watching me pack up my things."You're leaving?""To take a shower.""And then?""Sleep."Her mouth opened."You're not staying with him?"I glanced at her."The doctors are watching him. Staring at him won't wake him up."Bianca was quiet for a moment."You really have changed.""Have I?""When you loved someone, you used to stake everything on them. Even yourself."I snapped my bag shut."I did that once."It cost me everything."She had no idea which time I meant, and she didn't ask.Back at the house by the water, I slept a full ten hours.Niccolo was still unconscious, but I went on eating, working, living as usual.I didn't bother explaining it to anyone. This was exactly what he wanted me to do.I didn't cancel the California trip either. I moved it back a week at a time.Niccolo's luggage still sat beside mine.If he woke up, we'd go together. If

The light over the operating room stayed on all night. My father came.Bianca came.Rosa came as well.Matteo turned up last, his shoulder roughly dressed, his right hand covered in cuts.He didn't come near me. He stood at the far end of the corridor.Police kept going in and out.Antonio wasn't dead. They pulled him out of a car that was trying to get away. The man leading the outside gunmen was stopped at the port exit. Most importantly, Daniel was alive, and his phone had survived.Toward dawn, the lawyers brought the first batch of evidence they had put together to the hospital.Antonio had taken the money, arranged for the fake hotel staff, and gained access to the wine bottle. Then he'd deliberately left a trail leading to a warehouse the Rossi family had used for years. The point of it was obvious.Make me look like the poisoner, then let the Rossi, Moretti, and Vitale families tear each other apart over the investigation. This time, the plan hadn't been carried out in full.Bu

Niccolo was in the loading area. When I found him, a truck was lying on its side in the middle of the road.Niccolo and two of his men were pinned down behind it. Beside them was a stranger with a gunshot wound in his leg.He was probably Daniel Hayes, the witness the police were looking for.Niccolo didn't look at all pleased to see me."What are you doing here?""Saving you.""I told you to wait outside.""You have time to argue right now?""Yes.""Then you're not dying yet."That shut him up, but he still looked grim."Can you walk?""Yes.""The leg?""Old injury.""I'm asking about new ones.""None."I had barely let my breath out when I saw the blood on his arm."And that?""A graze.""The witness?"Niccolo looked at the man beside him."He has to come out with us.""What does he know?""Who was involved in paying Antonio. And how the poisoning happened."Gunfire from the other side struck the truck again, making it shudder. Then shooting started off to one side. But it wasn't aim
