Chapter 5

Auteur: Palma W
Two days later, I went to the Vitale family's seaside restaurant.

My father was still uneasy when his car stopped outside. He reminded me again, "Niccolo wasn't always like this."

I turned my head. "Meaning what?"

"When he was 18 or 19, he was the star of the Vitale family. A good shot, and ruthless. Everyone thought he'd take over the family at a younger age than his father had." My father paused. "Then something happened. He injured his leg and rarely appeared in public after that. The Vitale family has kept a low profile these past few years. People say they're in decline."

When he finished I only asked, "Is that everything?"

That stopped him.

"I'm warning you, that's all. If you truly don't want this, there's still time to turn back."

I pushed the car door open.

"I've already made a mess out of a marriage once."

My father frowned. "Meaning what?"

"Meaning I'm clear-headed now. I know what I want."

The restaurant's second floor overlooked the sea.

Niccolo was already there.

He was thinner than in the photograph, his black shirt outlining his shoulders. When he stood, he held his cane in his right hand. His right leg lagged slightly, and he made no attempt to hide it.

That actually relaxed me.

I didn't like it when people tried to hide the obvious, as if ignoring it could make it disappear.

"Serafina."

He nodded to me.

"Niccolo."

Once we sat down, he pushed the menu across to me.

"What do you like?"

I nearly answered without thinking.

Luca likes seafood.

Bianca doesn't eat anything raw.

Matteo...

And there I stopped.

Niccolo looked up. "Is it that hard to choose?"

It wasn't that it was hard to choose.

It was that I had just discovered I had no idea what the answer was.

While my mother was alive, she decided what everyone ate. Then I was chasing Luca, so I went wherever he liked to go. After I married Matteo, the kitchen staff knew his tastes and what to keep off my plate.

But nobody had ever asked me what I liked, and I had never seriously thought about it either.

"Something spicy."

I pointed at a seafood dish at random.

Niccolo made no comment.

Ten minutes later, the first bite had me coughing with my eyes streaming.

He pushed the water toward me.

I couldn't get a word out, so I glared at him instead.

Niccolo's face was perfectly calm. "I'm not laughing."

"Your eyes are."

"They came that way."

I wanted to throw the water in his face even more. What was so funny about a woman as poised, cool, and gorgeous as me? The man had to be blind.

He'd already asked the waiter to take the dish away and bring a mild pasta dish instead.

"You can take your time with it."

I wiped the corner of my eye. "With what?"

"Finding out what you like."

That shut me up.

He didn't follow my father's script and ask why I had suddenly agreed to marry. He didn't ask whether I still had feelings for Luca. He didn't bring up his leg to test whether it bothered me.

He took a sip of coffee. "The same goes for getting engaged."

"Meaning what?"

"Your father has talked to me."

"And?"

"And I was willing to meet you."

Niccolo looked up.

"But today you don't have to prove that you'd suit the Vitale family, and you don't have to prove you're over anyone."

I stared at him. "Then what do you want me to prove?"

"Nothing at all."

He said it so naturally that I didn't know what to do with it.

"We can see each other a few more times," he said. "If you're happy with that, we'll keep going. If not, have someone tell me."

I couldn't help asking, "You're not worried about losing face?"

"Being turned down by a woman isn't losing face."

"In families like ours, a lot of people think otherwise."

"That's their problem."

I laughed before I could stop myself.

The meal was far easier than I had expected.

On the way out I scanned the parking area out of habit.

My father's car was on the left. There were people in the cars ahead and behind, and Moretti bodyguards stood at the exit.

I didn't move on until I'd finished counting.

Niccolo stopped behind me.

I turned around. "What?"

"Nothing."

He looked at me for two seconds.

"Do you always do that?"

"Do what?"

"Count the cars before you get into one."

I frowned.

It was a habit my mother had drilled into me. She always said a Moretti daughter should at least know how many people were standing around her.

"Habit."

Niccolo didn't push.

Once I was in the car I looked back without meaning to.

He was still standing at the restaurant door with the sea wind moving his jacket.

For a second, there was something strange about the way he looked at me.

Not like a man meeting someone for the first time.

More like someone who had waited a long time and had finally confirmed he had the right person.

On the wedding day, the Vitale estate was busy from first light.Long tables were set up by the water and white flowers ran from the main house all the way down to the lawn. The band, the food trucks, the security team, and the medical team all arrived early. It was as lavish as ever. But there were far fewer guests than originally planned. No business partners squeezed onto the list for the sake of appearances, and none of the fuss about who came and who didn't that my mother used to care about so much.Only the people who truly mattered to us remained on the list.I put on the white gown. Before going out to the estate, I went to the hospital.Niccolo was still lying there.I sat down beside the bed."I'm getting married today."Nothing."You can skip it. Every guest already knows the groom hasn't woken up."I took out the old coin and waved it in front of his eyes."I'm taking this with me."When you wake up, you'll have to come after me yourself."As I spoke, my eyes reddened anywa

Ten days before the wedding, Bianca came to the house by the water alone for the first time and carried in a large box."What is that?""Things cleared out of a storeroom.""Your brother's?""Some of it."I frowned immediately. "Then take it away.""Look first."In the box were a red tablecloth, table settings, a few old wine glasses, and some things that were obviously a woman's.I picked up the cloth.I didn't recognize it.But it was almost the same red I'd liked to use in the Rossi dining room in my last life.None of which ever happened in this one.Once his memory came back, though, Matteo had gone looking for things like them."He says it would be a waste to throw them out," Bianca explained."I didn't ask for them.""I know."So I'm not bringing them for you to keep either."She took a bottle out of the bottom of the box."I picked this one myself. I'm taking the rest with me in a while."I looked at her. "Why are you giving me wine?""The wedding.""I thought you didn't want u

In the second month, Niccolo got better little by little. He was breathing on his own for longer stretches, and he was starting to respond to sound. My trust was now entirely separate from the family's assets. The roof of the house by the water had been repaired, and the title to the California property had been confirmed.I went to the hospital in the afternoons.Sometimes I read him the paper. Sometimes I said nothing at all.The wedding was set for the following month. The Vitale family asked whether I wanted to postpone.I said not yet. When my father heard, something complicated crossed his face."You're sure?""I'm not sure.""Then why not postpone it?""Because there's still a month."I turned to the next page in the file."Whatever the situation is in a month, I'll decide then."My father looked at me. "You didn't use to be like this.""Like what?"I smiled.Antonio confessed to everything. He had been taking money from the outside gunmen for a long time.Matteo publicly took r

On the third day of Niccolo's coma, I went home for a night's sleep.Nobody could believe it.Bianca stood in the doorway of the room watching me pack up my things."You're leaving?""To take a shower.""And then?""Sleep."Her mouth opened."You're not staying with him?"I glanced at her."The doctors are watching him. Staring at him won't wake him up."Bianca was quiet for a moment."You really have changed.""Have I?""When you loved someone, you used to stake everything on them. Even yourself."I snapped my bag shut."I did that once."It cost me everything."She had no idea which time I meant, and she didn't ask.Back at the house by the water, I slept a full ten hours.Niccolo was still unconscious, but I went on eating, working, living as usual.I didn't bother explaining it to anyone. This was exactly what he wanted me to do.I didn't cancel the California trip either. I moved it back a week at a time.Niccolo's luggage still sat beside mine.If he woke up, we'd go together. If

The light over the operating room stayed on all night. My father came.Bianca came.Rosa came as well.Matteo turned up last, his shoulder roughly dressed, his right hand covered in cuts.He didn't come near me. He stood at the far end of the corridor.Police kept going in and out.Antonio wasn't dead. They pulled him out of a car that was trying to get away. The man leading the outside gunmen was stopped at the port exit. Most importantly, Daniel was alive, and his phone had survived.Toward dawn, the lawyers brought the first batch of evidence they had put together to the hospital.Antonio had taken the money, arranged for the fake hotel staff, and gained access to the wine bottle. Then he'd deliberately left a trail leading to a warehouse the Rossi family had used for years. The point of it was obvious.Make me look like the poisoner, then let the Rossi, Moretti, and Vitale families tear each other apart over the investigation. This time, the plan hadn't been carried out in full.Bu

Niccolo was in the loading area. When I found him, a truck was lying on its side in the middle of the road.Niccolo and two of his men were pinned down behind it. Beside them was a stranger with a gunshot wound in his leg.He was probably Daniel Hayes, the witness the police were looking for.Niccolo didn't look at all pleased to see me."What are you doing here?""Saving you.""I told you to wait outside.""You have time to argue right now?""Yes.""Then you're not dying yet."That shut him up, but he still looked grim."Can you walk?""Yes.""The leg?""Old injury.""I'm asking about new ones.""None."I had barely let my breath out when I saw the blood on his arm."And that?""A graze.""The witness?"Niccolo looked at the man beside him."He has to come out with us.""What does he know?""Who was involved in paying Antonio. And how the poisoning happened."Gunfire from the other side struck the truck again, making it shudder. Then shooting started off to one side. But it wasn't aim
