Chapter 2

Author: Ashton Stone
"I didn't think Joel would take it the wrong way and turn it into this whole thing," Lewis said, playing the reasonable guy caught in someone else's drama.

Fiona softened in his arms.

My phone was still out. With footage this good unfolding right in front of me, there was no way I could pass it up. I started filming from every angle, making sure I caught it all.

"There you go. A little closer. Come on, put your arms around her. That's it. Hold her tight. Hell, why stop there? Give her a kiss."

Fiona finally seemed to remember I was there and pulled away from Lewis.

"Joel, what is your problem? Delete that video. Now!"

I snorted and pocketed my phone. "Not a chance. Let's see what everyone online has to say. Am I imagining things, or do you two just have no shame?"

Fiona struggled for a response before finally settling on a threat. "Post that video, and I promise you'll regret it."

After three wish-fulfillment novels, it would take more than an empty threat to rattle me.

Besides, this was just the beginning.

Now that I was in this story, I intended to have a say in how it ended. This miserable tragedy was about to get an ending where I came out on top.

-

I expected Fiona and Lewis to keep their heads down for a while. Instead, at 3 a.m., a barrage of notifications woke me from a perfectly good night's sleep.

I reached for my phone and squinted at the screen, still half asleep. Every notification seemed to link to Lewis's livestream, so I tapped one.

Lewis stood at the edge of the rooftop, his jaw tight and his voice strained as he accused me of driving him to suicide.

"Nothing happened between Fiona and me. I told Joel that, but apparently, my word means nothing. He'd rather drag my name through the mud.

"I worked my ass off to get here, and now he's tearing it all down. If he gets his way, I'll have nothing left. What the hell am I supposed to live for then?"

The comments flooded in, and viewers wasted no time tearing into me.

[Lewis gives people way too much credit. He has no idea how nasty they can be. Joel's just a gold digger trying to lock Fiona down!]

[Lewis and Fiona would be perfect together. Why can't Joel just drop dead?]

[Lewis, don't throw your life away over that loser. Joel's the one who should jump!]

[Seriously, what does Fiona even see in Joel? Why would she agree to marry him?]

I gave a low whistle. Internet trolls were the same everywhere: all opinions, no brain cells.

Someone else appeared on-screen.

Fiona rushed toward him, pale with fear, her voice catching. "Lewis, please step away from the edge! This is my fault. I should've protected you. I promise I won't let anyone hurt you again..."

Quite a show.

It wasn't hard to guess where this little drama was headed. The powerful CEO and the man everyone misunderstood would confess their feelings and fall into each other's arms.

True love would win, and everyone would live happily ever after. Everyone except Joel, who got to walk away heartbroken and humiliated.

Unfortunately for them, I wasn't the pushover they were used to. And I did enjoy making trouble.

I went straight to the livestream chat and started typing.

[Here's an idea, Fiona. You can jump with your precious Lewis. Then you can be together forever and prove your innocence. If neither of you jumps, I'll take that as confirmation you're both full of it.]

Satisfied with my contribution, I left the livestream, turned off my phone, and slept like a baby until morning.

The next day, my adoring fans started sending gifts. Such thoughtful people.

Funeral wreaths showed up at my door. Someone splashed paint across my property, and others smashed the windows.

Fiona even bankrupted a small business my family owned—the one Joel had passed off as their sole source of income.

I turned my phone back on. Sure enough, my name was still all over the trending lists, with hundreds of thousands of comments tearing me apart.

Things were just getting started.

As far as I was concerned, the bigger the scandal got, the better.

Every threat Fiona had made against me came back to haunt her. The life she promised to ruin turned out to be her own.She trembled with anger and glared at Lewis. "And you think you're any better? Everyone's seen how you got those roles. Do you honestly think anyone's gonna hire you now? You'll sleep with anyone who can get you a job!"Lewis shoved her, and Fiona shoved back. Within seconds, they were grabbing at each other, trading increasingly ugly insults.People stopped to watch. A few took out their phones and started recording. So much for Fiona's image as a glamorous, successful CEO. Lewis's wholesome boy-next-door act didn't survive the evening, either.Eventually, Fiona ran out of strength and sank to the ground. She stared at the light spilling from the ballroom, finally taking stock of what she had lost. Her mistake started long before tonight. She fell for Lewis's innocent act, then went out of her way to humiliate me. If she had treated me decently from the start

Dad clapped me on the shoulder. "That's my boy. You did well."Mom smiled. "From now on, do what makes you happy. Your father and I will always be here for you."Speaking of which, Stella's here tonight. Would you like me to put in a good word?"And if you two don't hit it off, there are plenty of other lovely women here. Tell me who catches your eye, and I'll introduce you."I followed her gaze to a woman in an elegant black gown, custom-made to fit her perfectly. Her features were soft and lovely, and her eyes crinkled when she smiled.Stella Schmidt. Joel's childhood sweetheart. She noticed me looking, and her smile widened.Stella had an easy elegance about her. From her posture to the way she held her champagne, she looked entirely at home in a ballroom full of old money. After Fiona's performance a few minutes earlier, the difference was striking.Stella held out one of her two champagne glasses."Been a while, Joel." Her voice was warm. "Nicely done, by the way."I

"Your...son?"Fiona slowly turned to stare at me.I handed my phone to a bodyguard and told him to keep streaming. Then I walked over and took my place between my parents.I gave Fiona an innocent smile. "You remember my last name's Johnson, right?"She wasn't the only one stunned. Lewis, already struggling to get back on his feet, sank to the floor again.By now, even the slowest person in the room could put it together.I was the only son of two extraordinarily powerful people. All this time, I had kept my identity to myself and let everyone underestimate me.Though giving Fiona the impression we were ever in the same league was probably too generous. She barely registered.Mom ignored her and took my hand.In business, she could intimidate an entire room without raising her voice. With me, her expression softened immediately."Honey, look what they've put you through. I told you to let your father break a few bones at the start. We could've saved you all this trouble."

I had the folder's contents displayed on the ballroom screen and aimed my phone at it. The livestream chat exploded. It contained detailed records of Fiona and Lewis checking into hotels together, along with records of his hotel visits with various directors, both men and women. Apparently, there wasn't much he wouldn't do to get ahead. There was an itemized list, too. Luxury brand deals, expensive watches, sports cars, and even the apartment he proudly claimed he bought with his own hard-earned money. As it turned out, a whole string of wealthy women financed his lifestyle.Bank statements and receipts backed up every transaction, all neatly arranged by date. The evidence left him very little room to explain.I aimed my phone at Fiona and Lewis and raised my voice."What a stand-up guy. No wonder Fiona's so taken with you. You care about her so much that you're sleeping with half the industry behind her back."Lewis went white. His knees buckled, and he hit the floor. He brace

Did Lewis really not realize his little performance was what made Fiona look bad?Everyone nearby turned to stare. Whispers spread through the crowd, and a few guests pointed our way.Fiona, who had just warned me not to embarrass her, immediately jumped to his defense. She caught his arm and stepped in front of him."Joel, are you happy now? I asked you not to cause a scene, and now Lewis has to stand here defending himself in front of everyone!"Do you think humiliating him will make me cut him out of my life? Let me save you the trouble. You're nowhere near the man he is!"Her voice carried across the room. Apparently, her concerns about making a scene no longer applied.I nodded and gave them a round of applause. Such devotion deserved an audience."It seems selfish to keep a performance this good to myself. Let's share it."I pulled out my phone, started a livestream, and aimed the camera at them. "Sorry, I missed the beginning. Can you run through that again? Come on. L

After all, the higher you climb, the harder you fall.Fiona showed up with Lewis, looking far too pleased with herself. Apparently, she expected to enjoy watching me admit defeat."Well, Joel? Have you learned your lesson? Give Lewis a public apology, and I'm willing to put this behind us. I might even let you stick around. You always did love following me everywhere."I stayed on the couch and rolled my eyes. "Do you actually believe the things you say, or are you just used to nobody calling you out?"When it became clear I wasn't giving in, Lewis put a hand on Fiona's arm. His shoulders sank, and he looked at me as though I was being thoroughly unreasonable."It's okay, Fiona. He's made up his mind. You want another apology, Joel? Fine. But your problem's with me. Leave her out of it."Lewis started to speak again, but Fiona took his arm and stopped him.She came here expecting me to beg for forgiveness. Instead, her precious Lewis was taking the blame while I sat there unimpr
