When Pearl and Evren returned to camp, they found the rest of the expedition exactly where they had left them. Lucien was still buried beneath an impressive mountain of notes, though now Rowan had joined him, patiently copying translated passages into a fresh journal. Rosalie had somehow convinced Astrid to help organize the papers, a decision she appeared to be regretting almost immediately.

Astrid held up two nearly identical sheets.

"Lucien."

"Hm?"

"Why do you have three copies of the same p

By the time the Harvest Festival drew to a close, the sky had turned into a canvas of deep orange bleeding into soft pink. Villagers lined the main road, waving as the royal party made ready to leave. A knot of children still clung to the stuffed wolf Finn had won earlier, flatly ignoring his increasingly theatrical pleas to get it back."I've been replaced," Finn announced, wounded. The little girl holding the toy grinned up at him. "He likes us better."Finn pressed a hand to his chest. "I understand. It's painful... but I understand."Astrid laughed. "You'll survive.""I suppose I must."Before mounting his horse, Evren crossed back to the children one last time. "You all behaved well today."The boy who'd challenged him to the race puffed out his chest. "We beat you.""You certainly did.""Will you race us again next time?"Evren smiled. "If you promise not to get any faster.""No promises.""I was afraid you'd say that," he said, and the children dissolved into laughter. As the g

The children lined up at the edge of the meadow with far more determination than the occasion seemed to warrant. There were at least twelve of them, ranging from six to twelve years old, and every last one looked utterly convinced they were about to defeat the Crown Prince.Evren stood among them, stretching his shoulders with exaggerated gravity."This seems unfair," he said. One little boy crossed his arms. "You're scared."Evren pressed a hand to his heart. "I've been exposed."A little girl giggled. "You admitted it!""I did," he said solemnly. "I fear losing with what little dignity I have left."Pearl laughed from the sidelines. "I don't think you have much left after the dancing."Rosalie high-fived her at once. "That was excellent."Evren shot Pearl a look of mock betrayal. "I thought we were friends.""We are.""This is what friendship looks like?"Finn strolled over, the enormous stuffed wolf still tucked beneath one arm. "I volunteer as referee."Astrid eyed him. "Do you ev

The teasing followed Evren long after the music had faded. He'd accepted by now that there was no outrunning it — every villager he passed seemed to have a knowing grin or a cheerful clap on the shoulder waiting for him."You danced well, Your Highness!" one called."You looked happier than usual!" said another."When's the wedding?" asked a third.Evren stopped in his tracks. "What?"The elderly man who'd asked simply chuckled and shuffled off, entirely unbothered by the chaos he'd left behind. Pearl ducked her head, biting back a laugh she couldn't quite hide. Rosalie made no such effort — she doubled over laughing outright."I like this village," she declared."Of course you do," Evren muttered.Finn clapped him on the back. "I've never seen an entire village gang up on one man like this.""They're not against me.""No, they're having the time of their lives.""That's worse."Astrid shook her head, clearly amused. "You really walked into this one.""I danced into it," Evren correct

The village square grew even livelier as the afternoon wore on. Colorful ribbons were tied between rooftops, musicians gathered near the fountain with violins and flutes, and long wooden tables were carried into the center of the square.Pearl looked around curiously. "What's happening?"Evren followed her gaze and smiled. "You picked the perfect day to visit. The Harvest Festival.""Oh, I completely forgot!" Rosalie's eyes lit up."Please tell me festivals involve food," Finn said, looking around excitedly."Why am I not surprised that's your first question?" Astrid sighed."It's an important question.""They also involve music, dancing, games, and local traditions," Lucien said, smiling without looking up from the pamphlet someone had handed him."I heard 'food' first.""I know you did."A cheerful woman carrying a basket full of flowers hurried over to them. "Your Highness!""Mrs. Elora," Evren greeted her, smiling."You've arrived just in time." She glanced at the rest of the grou

By midday, the village square had become lively. Merchants arranged baskets overflowing with fresh fruit, woven blankets hung outside small shops, and the smell of roasted meat drifted through the warm summer air. Children darted between market stalls while musicians played cheerful tunes near the old stone fountain.Pearl slowed her horse, taking in the scene. "It feels... alive.""That's why I like coming here," Evren said, smiling."It's peaceful.""It reminds me the kingdom isn't just castles and council meetings."As soon as they entered the square, several familiar faces greeted them."Prince Evren!" A middle-aged baker stepped out of his shop, wiping flour from his hands. "You've finally remembered we exist.""I was gone for four days," Evren laughed."Exactly.""Far too long."Rosalie leaned toward Pearl. "See? It isn't just his mother.""I'm beginning to notice a pattern," Pearl smiled. The baker noticed Pearl standing beside Evren and smiled warmly. "So this must be the famo

Breakfast ended with far more excitement than Pearl had expected. The moment the servants cleared the last of the dishes, Evren was already on his feet."We should leave before Father changes his mind."Eros looked at him over the rim of his coffee cup. "I heard that.""I wanted you to."The King shook his head, smiling. "You've become remarkably confident.""I learned from the best.""I'll decide whether that's a compliment later."Mira jumped to her feet at once. "I'm coming too.""No."She stopped short. "What do you mean, no?""I mean exactly that," Eros said, folding his arms. "You have lessons this morning."Mira turned to Freya. "Mother?""Your father is right," Freya said, sympathetic but firm. "You've already postponed them twice."Mira sighed dramatically. "Education is exhausting.""You haven't even started today's lessons," Lucien said, looking up from his tea."I'm already tired thinking about them.""I'll bring you something from town," Rosalie offered, and Mira's eyes l
