Chapter five

LEONARD POV.

"Hey, man!" I heard the voice of the person I'd been standing in this park waiting for. Luckily for him, I'm not angry. It was actually fun watching as kids play, and laugh like there is no care for the world.

It makes me imagine the feeling I'll get to watch my own child laugh, and play like that. I don't even know the kind of father I'll be, or who I'll be a father to. A boy or a girl.

One thing I know damn sure is, I'm not gonna be a father like my father.

"Are you ignoring me, Leonard?"

I looked at him. "You made me wait, Nick."

"I was caught in traffic. I can't control traffic."

"Then why wasn't I?" I asked feeling a spark of anger.

He noticed me. "Chill, man. What's getting you all worked up? I'm sure it's not me."

I sighed. "Nothing."

He raised his brow. "Really?"

I shook my head. "It's just my wife."

His eyes widened. "Whoa. She's getting to you."

"Not really. She just wants something that I can't offer. She went all moody on me today because of that. We argue a lot, but I've never gotten her to cry."

Just remembering it stabs my heart. Damn it!

"Your wife is pregnant."

I looked at him in annoyance. "And so? Why announce something I already know?"

He sighed. "Oh, man. I'm guessing you don't know anything about pregnancy. You probably think pregnancy is all about having a big stomach and giving birth."

I furrowed my brows. What does this guy see me as? "I know the little there is to know about pregnancy."

He nodded. "OK. Have you heard of hormones?"

Then it dawned on me. Hormones.

"I think you haven't seen anything yet, man. This is just the beginning."

I blinked. "Oh. You have a kid. How was it like for you?"

He chuckled. "It was hell. Pray your wife doesn't wake you up at night and tell you to do something for her. Once she does that, you'll face hell before she could decide on what she really wants."

"Pregnant women do that?" I asked with a frown.

He nodded. "Some can be worse."

I sighed. I can't imagine going through that.

"You seem to love her."

I raised a brow. "Love? Isn't love going a bit too far?"

He scoffed. "Don't deny it, man. You hardly care, but you seem to care about this one. One that your father gave you to marry."

I glanced at him. "She's not bad. She's better."

"For you?"

I lowered my eyes. "Well, if she wasn't betrothed to me, I don't think I would have deserved her. She's too good for me."

He nodded. "It turns out, it doesn't matter which way, but your soulmate will always find its way to you, and yours did even if it is in the guise of a contract."

I looked at him, and I wonder if he was right. I don't deny myself things, but why do I wanna deny myself her? Why do I feel like I don't deserve her?

Is it because I do love her?

I sighed. "Let's talk about why I called you."

He nodded. "Yeah."

"You got the information?" I asked expectantly.

He nodded. "You have time, Leo. Time to make things right. It worked."

I sighed. "So everything is fine."

"Yeah. Rest assured everything is fine."

"Everything seems to be, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't be careful. I don't want to be caught unaware." I told him.

He nodded. "I'm going back tomorrow since your plans about your club are indefinitely suspended."

"You'll get over it."

He raised his brow. "Really? No apologies?"

I frowned at him. "Not my fault. I didn't know my wife will misdirect me."

He scoffed. "Do you even apologize to your wife?"

I nodded. "I do."

"You do?"

"I do."

"Why?"

"Because she's my wife, and she should be home by now. I gotta go. Good luck on your journey back."

He sighed. "Right. Bye."

A message popped into my phone, and I sighed seeing it was my father.

"Meet me."

ALEXA'S POV.

"Yeah. Yeah. Thanks for the feedback." I said and hung the call-up. The information I was given dazed me into thoughts.

I went to meet my godfather today but he didn't even tell me about this.

Should I confront him? He probably has a reason, but this is too much.

I dropped the telephone back with a sigh. I should....

A car sound grabbed my attention. A sigh of relief came out of me. Thank God.

I folded my arms and waited for him to come in with no smile on my face because he actually made me worried.

He was supposed to come earlier, but now it's already evening. He didn't even call to tell me if his schedule changed, or not. If he has one.

He sighted me immediately as he walked in.

"You're standing like someone who's about to kill someone." He said sizing me up, as he walked closer to me.

"Maybe you?" I raised a brow at him.

"Hmm. What did I do?" He asked with narrowed eyes.

I tilted my head to the side in disbelief. "Really. You were supposed to be home since."

His eyes widened in realization. "Oh yeah. I was."

"Then why weren't you?" I asked dropping my hands to my sides.

He sighed. "I had to go see my dad."

I raised a brow. "Your dad. What did you talk about?"

He shrugged. "Father, and son talk. Nothing serious about it. Why poking?

I sighed. "Well, your dad withdrew a huge amount from my company's account today."

He frowned. "What?"

I nodded. "Yeah."

"But you went to see him today."

I shook my head. "He didn't tell me. Did he tell you?" I asked expectantly.

He shook his head. "He didn't."

His eyes were lowered in thoughts. I wish I was telepathic to know exactly what is always in his head.

He seemed worried even though he shouldn't be, since he doesn't even care about my company.

"I'm thinking of confronting him about it," I informed him.

He looked at me. "That's a bad idea."

I scowled. "Why?"

"There's a reason why he didn't tell you, so if you confront him, he'll lie."

I furrowed my brows in confusion. "Why would your dad lie?"

"Because people lie." He said with a shrug.

I was confused. He's judging his father with the way he knew him, but I'm judging my godfather with the way I knew him, and truly people lie, but he wouldn't have done something like this behind my back.

"I need to know what he wants to do with it, Leo," I told him.

He raised his brow. "Really?"

I nodded. "The money didn't really affect it, but it was too much. If something of that sort keeps happening, it could go bankrupt. Now I don't know what your father is really doing, or what's in his head, I just know this isn't right."

He nodded in approval. "I'll help you find it out. It's obvious he's up no good, although I know you trust him."

I sighed. "I thought so."

He shook his head. "He's the kind of person you shouldn't trust. A man who neglected his own son, and went on being a good father to someone else's. It's wrong."

I blinked away from him in mortification. That was right. I never thought of it. Probably why Leo is so angry at him.

I looked at him. Luckily, he isn't taking it out on me.

"Have you thought about it?"

I furrowed my brows. "About what?"

"About what I just said. You were thinking."

I gulped. "Um, I just thought it's probably why you're angry at your father."

He gave me a look of disbelief. "Really?"

I nodded. "Yeah, why? Should I have thought something else?"

He sighed. "I wanna spin your head around a little, so I'll just drop this.." He trailed.

I frowned at the statement. What?

"A good reliable person doesn't do what he did. There's something I didn't tell you, and I wanna tell you. I never knew who that man was until the day he walked up to me, and said 'I'm his son'. He has always known me, but he never cared. He was busy being such a good father to someone else." He paused.

A shaky breath came out of me at that statement.

"I know you have no idea about it, and I know he's like a paragon to you, but I want you to think well on why he did such. A person won't do such if there was no motive."

I felt conflicted. Totally confused.

"You... You think godfather is up to no good?" I asked wondering it myself.

He shrugged. "As I said, I wanna spin your head. I advise you to start putting things in a book. You see him as a perfect man, but he can't be perfect all the time. Everyone has flaws."

I gulped. This was becoming scary. He's beginning to change how I've been seeing things.

"I'm hungry." He whined.

I blinked and nodded. "Go freshen up, I'll serve dinner."

He smiled and pecked my forehead. "Thanks, babe." Then he walked away.

Seeing him retreating toward the stairs, I was beginning to feel sorry for him. I know different things are in his head, but I'm sure what his father did was part of it.

He knew he had a son, but he was being a good father to me instead. What do I make up of all these?

I guess my friends were wrong.

But then, a question skipped me. Why did he accept to marry me?

There's got to be a reason why he listened to a man he never knew.
