Chapter 2

Autor: Thursday
My eyes stung.

The next second, I carelessly slammed the car door shut. The noise made all three of them turn to look at me at once.

The moment Enrico saw me, his expression changed. He strode over quickly and grabbed my wrist, his tone frantic. "What are you doing here?"

I gently pulled my hand free and plastered on a flawless smile of confusion. My gaze swept over Luisa and Cinzia standing beside her. I asked with feigned curiosity, "You left and didn't come back for so long. I had nothing to do at home, so I thought I'd come see what was keeping you."

Luisa started to speak, but Enrico cut her off, "Luisa's been helping out at the orphanage, looking after the kids. This is Cinzia. She's been living at the orphanage. I know you've always loved children, so I thought we could adopt her. She could keep you company."

He reached up and ruffled my hair as he spoke. The tenderness in his eyes looked genuine, but my heart felt nothing but cold.

I looked at Cinzia and gently reached out to take her small hand.

The child immediately shrank back into Luisa's arms and timidly called out, "Mamma."

Luisa quickly smoothed things over, her face full of innocent concern. "She's young and shy around strangers. I've been taking care of her for a while now, so she's closer to me. That's why she calls me 'Mamma'.

"I think it'll be hard for her to adjust to a new environment all at once. Since I know her temperament, I can help take care of her and ease her into life at your home. Once she's warmed up to you both, I'll gradually step back."

Nearby, a few orphanage staff members huddled together and whispered, "That's the woman Don Salvatore treasures most? But the one he registered with is clearly Luisa."

"Right? He comes here every day to see Luisa and the kid. That woman's probably been kept in the dark this whole time."

"Luisa's already had his child, and this woman doesn't even have legal status. Now, she's adopting someone else's kid. What's the point?"

I pretended not to hear them. "I do love children, but I'm afraid I won't be able to take good care of her. I don't want her to suffer because of me."

Enrico reached over and took my hand. "What's there to be afraid of? I'm here, and Luisa will help. The child won't suffer."

Luisa chimed in from the side, her face full of sincerity, "Isabella, don't worry. I'm just lending a hand. Once she's settled in, I won't intrude anymore. After all, it's your home. I'm just here to help."

Her words sounded so gracious.

I sneered inwardly but still put on the appearance of being convinced. I nodded. "Alright then. Since you've already arranged everything, we'll take Cinzia home. I'll just have to trouble you to keep looking after her."

Luisa immediately waved her hand, smiling politely. "It's no trouble at all. I'm happy to help."

Enrico's mood visibly improved once the matter was settled. He exchanged a few words with the orphanage staff about follow-up procedures, reminded Luisa to take good care of Cinzia until the paperwork was finalized, then helped me into the car.

On the drive back, his phone buzzed nonstop. I did not need to guess who it was.

He kept his head down, typing away rapidly. He did not spare me a single glance the entire time.

The few times he did look up to speak to me, it was only about arranging things for Cinzia or discussing how Luisa would help with her care.

I leaned against the car window and stared at the scenery flying past outside. I did not say a word the entire way.

I pretended I knew nothing. I pretended I was still fooled by his tenderness. But his indifference and lies had already carved wound after wound into my heart.

The car pulled into the estate. I pushed the door open first and headed straight into the house. I locked the bedroom door behind me.

Leaning against the cold door, I could no longer hold up the smile on my face.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed the number I had not dared call in five years. "Papa, I'm tired. I want to go home."

An urgent voice came through the line. "Did Enrico do something to you?"

Hearing Papa's familiar voice, I could not stop the tears from falling. "Papa, I was wrong."

There was no scolding on the other end, only heartache and concern. "Did someone hurt my precious daughter? Don't be afraid. I'll send someone to bring you home right now."

"Okay..."

  • The Marriage That Never Was Real   Chapter 10

My engagement party with Matteo was held grandly at the Moretti family estate. I wore a white haute couture gown, its hem studded with tiny diamonds that sparkled under the lights. Matteo wore a sharp black suit and stood beside me, holding my hand tightly.Just as the engagement ceremony was about to begin, the estate gates were suddenly forced open. Enrico stormed in with several of his men, ignoring the guards trying to stop him. "Isabella! You can't marry him!" Enrico roared as he shoved through the crowd and grabbed my hand."Come with me! I know I was wrong. I really know I was wrong! I shouldn't have deceived you, shouldn't have ignored you, shouldn't have made you suffer so much! I'll make it up to you. I'll love you more than Matteo ever could, and I'll love our child too!"I yanked my hand away forcefully. "Enrico, let go! We're over!""No! It's not over!" Enrico insisted stubbornly, his eyes red, his voice hoarse. "You still love me. You're just angry! Matteo is using

News of Luisa's imprisonment by the Moretti family reached Enrico. On top of that, he learned I had not miscarried at all and was about to enter a marriage alliance with Matteo. He had always believed I had only left in a fit of anger, and that as long as he found me and apologized sincerely, he could win me back. But now, I was going to marry someone else. This was a reality he absolutely could not accept."Impossible! Isabella can't marry someone else! She's my woman!" Enrico violently swept the documents off his desk. His eyes were bloodshot, his expression crazed. He could not accept that the woman he treasured was about to fall into another man's arms, or that he had lost so much because of a lie. From that day on, Enrico abandoned all the dignity of a mafia Don and began camping outside the Moretti family estate every single day.He wore the black trench coat I used to love, clutching a large bouquet of red roses. Ignoring the guards trying to block him, he shouted my name at

Luisa's greed and schemes were making Enrico increasingly disgusted. He discovered that not only was she secretly transferring his assets, but she was also frequently in contact with an unfamiliar man. Her movements were suspicious."Who have you been contacting lately?" Once, Enrico caught a glimpse of a message on Luisa's phone. His expression darkened as he questioned her.Luisa's heart jumped. She quickly put her phone away, her eyes evasive. "No one... Just a friend."Her panic only deepened Enrico's suspicion. He recalled the time Luisa first claimed Cinzia was his daughter. Though she had cried pitifully, there had been a trace of barely detectable nervousness in her eyes.As for Cinzia's appearance, aside from her eyes, which bore some resemblance to his, there were not many other similarities.A terrible thought rose in Enrico's mind.He did not confront her. Instead, he secretly had someone collect a sample of Cinzia's hair and sent it for a paternity test.During the

After a month of rest, my health gradually improved, and the baby in my belly stabilized. One afternoon, I was admiring the roses Papa had recently planted in the courtyard when he walked over, his expression serious. "Isabella, there's something I'd like to discuss with you."My heart sank. I had a vague sense of what he was about to say."Papa, go ahead."Papa sighed and guided me to sit on a nearby stone bench. "As you know, Enrico won't give up searching for you easily. He's the Don of a mafia family. His methods are ruthless, his influence vast. We can protect you for now, but it's not a long-term solution."To give you and the child a more solid foundation, and to make Enrico give up completely, I've arranged a marriage alliance for you."I stayed silent, my emotions tangled. After experiencing a relationship full of deception and betrayal, I no longer held any expectations for love. But a marriage alliance meant binding my life to another unfamiliar man.Papa saw my hesi

The day after I left, Luisa moved into the estate with Cinzia, bold and unbothered. She wore my favorite dress and my high heels, parading through the estate with the air of the lady of the house."This is our home now, Cinzia." Luisa stroked Cinzia's head, her eyes gleaming with triumph. She had finally driven me away. Everything Enrico had was now hers and Cinzia's.She ordered the maids around arrogantly. One moment, she complained the coffee was not strong enough; the next, she criticized the food. She even had people throw out the furnishings in the estate and replace them with things in her preferred style.Enrico saw it all and felt uncomfortable, but his mind was consumed with finding me. He could not be bothered to deal with her.Seeing that, Luisa grew bolder. One evening at dinner, Luisa deliberately brought me up. "Enrico, honestly, Isabella's being ridiculous. She made such a big deal out of nothing, ran off, and even staged a miscarriage. Don't you think she's overre

  • The Marriage That Never Was Real   Chapter 5

When Enrico returned to the estate carrying Luisa, his mind was filled with the sound of my weak voice on the phone. He settled Luisa in a guest room and strode quickly toward my bedroom. When he found I was not there, a piece of paper on the desk immediately caught his eye.The header read boldly—'Miscarriage Certificate'.His heart seized in his chest. His breathing stopped instantly. He rushed forward and picked up the certificate with trembling hands. "Isabella Moretti, eight weeks pregnant. Due to severe emotional distress and external trauma, she miscarried.""No... That's impossible!" Enrico let out a low roar, his eyes bloodshot, unable to believe what he was seeing. He remembered my pale face that morning. He remembered my voice on the phone, so weak he could barely hear it. A wave of intense regret drowned him instantly."Where is she? Where did Isabella go?" Enrico rushed out of the bedroom and grabbed a passing maid by the arm, his voice hoarse with fury. The madness
