CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTEEN

ZOEY

The night had stretched long and restless, but by dawn, the house was quiet. For once, there were no hurried knocks on the door, no messengers calling for Graham, no whispers of new attacks.

I woke with the sunlight brushing across the curtains. Graham was already awake, lying beside me with one arm tucked behind his head. His eyes were on me, soft and thoughtful, like he’d been watching for a while.

“Morning,” I whispered, my voice rough with sleep.

“Morning,” he said. His hand reached over and brushed a strand of hair from my face. “You were frowning in your sleep.”

I sighed. “Dreams.”

“Bad?”

I nodded but didn’t explain. Not yet. He didn’t press me, and that was one of the things I loved most about him. He gave me space when I needed it.

Instead, I curled closer to his chest. His heart was steady under my ear, a sound that grounded me more than anything. For a few breaths, I let myself forget the shadows at our borders, the worry that lived in

CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTEENGRAHAMThe sun was already high when Viktor came to the house. His steps were steady, his coat lined with dust from the road, but he carried himself like he always did, with calm authority.I met him in the front hall.“Long ride?” I asked.“Not too long,” Viktor said. His mouth quirked in a small smile. “Your guards made sure of that. They stopped me at least three times.”“They’re doing their job,” I replied, though I knew my men could be excessive. After weeks of attacks and fear, they trusted little. We moved into the study. The maids had already set out tea and bread, though neither of us touched it right away. Viktor lowered himself into the chair across from me, his sharp eyes scanning the room as though memorizing it.“Zoey’s well?” he asked after a pause.“She’s fine,” I said, my tone clipped without meaning it to be. I didn’t want to explain, not yet. “And Lily?”“She is herself,” Viktor answered, and a small warmth touched his voice. “Full

  • The Mate She Can’t See   Heart to heart

CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND SIXTEENZOEYThe morning air was sharp and cool when I stepped out into the courtyard. I had planned to take a quiet walk, maybe clear my head before the day began, but the sight that met me made my stomach twist.A group of warriors stood in a circle, murmuring in low voices. In the center, Ronald bent down, brushing his fingers over something on the ground. I walked closer, and the moment he saw me, he straightened quickly, almost too quickly.“Zoey,” he greeted. His tone was warm but carried a hint of unease. “You shouldn’t be here.”“Why?” I asked, frowning. “What happened?”Behind him, one of the warriors kicked at the dirt, covering whatever had been there.“Nothing you need to worry about,” Ronald said. That answer only made me more alert. “Ronald. Don’t do that with me. What’s going on?”He looked over his shoulder, then sighed. “A body. Or what’s left of one. We found it by the eastern border.”A cold wave washed through me. “A body?”“Yes.” His voice

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTEENZOEYThe house was quiet when Lily came knocking. I hadn’t expected her, she usually sent someone ahead to announce her visits, but this time she just appeared at my door with a grin and a bundle of flowers clutched in her hands.“You didn’t forget me, did you?” she teased as I pulled her inside.“Forget you? You’re too loud to forget,” I said, laughing as I hugged her tight. She smelled of lavender and wood smoke. It was comforting, familiar in a way that made me feel like I was finally breathing after holding my breath for days.“These are for you,” she said, handing me the flowers. “Don’t ask where I got them. Just know they didn’t survive willingly.”I snorted and set them in a vase. “Murderer.”“Collector,” she corrected, eyes twinkling. “So, how’s my favorite cousin?”I raised a brow. “I’m your only cousin.”“Exactly. Easier for you to win the title.”We collapsed onto the couch together like we used to when we were younger, legs tangled, shoulder

CHAPTER TWENTY HUNDRED AND THIRTEENZOEYThe morning light filtered through the curtains, painting soft stripes across the floor. For once, I hadn’t woken up to nausea or Graham pacing the room like a restless wolf. Instead, there was quiet and calm. When I opened my eyes, Graham was already awake, lying on his side and watching me. His hand rested protectively on my stomach, even though it was still flat.I raised an eyebrow. “You’re staring.”“I’m memorizing,” he said simply.I laughed, rolling my eyes. “Memorizing what? My drool marks on the pillow?”“No,” he said, his voice dropping to that soft rumble that always made my chest ache. “You. Like this. Peaceful.”The warmth that spread through me was immediate and a little overwhelming. I reached up and brushed a strand of hair from his forehead. “You’re going to make me cry first thing in the morning.”“That’s not my intention,” he said, leaning closer. “My intention is to keep you smiling.”He kissed me, slow and sweet, the kind o

  • The Mate She Can’t See   Aftermath

CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN GRAHAMThe pack house felt too big when Zoey wasn’t by my side. She hadn’t been herself since yesterday. Breakfast ended with me barking at the maids for serving her soup that smelled too strong. Then, during our walk, I’d shouted at children who were only laughing and running. I thought I was protecting her. But when I looked at her face, all I saw was irritation, hurt, even. She’d slipped away not long after. First to Hannah’s room, then to the gardens, and then she disappeared into our quarters early, long before the evening meal. She didn’t shut me out completely—she still smiled when she passed me in the hall, still pressed a small kiss to my cheek when others were around. But the warmth, the easy closeness we always had… it was dimmed. And it was my fault.I sat in my office, staring at papers I couldn’t focus on. Reports of patrols, maps of the borders, lists of supplies. None of it mattered right now. All I could think about was the way Zoey h
