Chapter 2

Author: Myosotis
Caelum was still standing in the rain. Water dripped from his jaw.

When he saw me approaching, he stared at the letter in my hand, the one meant for the Snowwolf Pack. He reached out to grab it.

"Give it to me."

I stepped aside and held the letter against my chest. "This belongs to the Vex family. You have no right to see it."

The truth was, I did not want him to know that I was the one going to the Snowwolf Pack. The more he worried about Odette, the better. He had spent three years fighting me over Odette in our past life.

A flicker of anger crossed his eyes. "Athena, what are you planning now?"

"What could I be planning?" I laughed coldly. "Why are you so nervous?"

The rain grew heavier, soaking his shoulders.

He took a deep breath and his voice turned cold. "You never change. You always have to be the center of everything."

We stood there in the rain, locked in a stalemate. He frowned, his lips pressed into a thin line. I knew what he was thinking. He was thinking about why I always had to be so difficult.

I looked west, toward the ridge. The observation deck was up there, built on the highest point of the territory. It was the closest place to the moon in this whole Pack. Caelum had taken me there once, in our past life. He smiled at me that night and said we could come here more often. We never did.

I looked up at him. "Take me to the observation deck."

"Are you crazy?" He stared at me in disbelief. "In this rain? Odette's situation is still—"

"Are you coming or not?"

We stood there in the rain, locked in a stalemate. He frowned, his lips pressed into a thin line. I knew what he was thinking. He was thinking about why I always had to be so difficult.

But in the end, he sighed. "Fine. Wait here. I will get the car."

Watching his back, my nose suddenly stung.

This was how it always was. In both lives, no matter how much I acted out, he always gave in if I pushed hard enough. When I was fourteen and insisted on having candied fruit from the southern territory, he drove half the night to get it for me. When I was seventeen and said I wanted the moon, he built a platform in the backyard so I could be closer to it.

These memories cut deep. I finally understood why, even knowing he hated me, I still insisted on marrying him in my past life. Because no one else in this world would ever indulge me like this.

"What are you standing there for?" He had come back with an umbrella, his voice still impatient. "Are we going to the observation deck or not?"

I blinked away the burning in my eyes and followed him. Rainwater mixed with tears, bitter and salty against my lips.

The car moved slowly along the Pack's main road. The rain grew heavier, pounding against the roof like a drum.

I gripped the edge of my sleeve, my nails nearly digging into my palm.

Only I knew that this rain, which seemed like a good omen, would become a disaster. It would fall for an entire month, washing away the riverbanks, flooding the low hunting grounds and grain stores. The prey would all flee, and no Pack would have enough food to last two months. The border watchtowers would not hold.

Worse still, to stop the catastrophe, the Snowwolf Alpha would listen to the elders and sacrifice innocent wolves. They would tie them to stone altars and let their blood flow into the offering grooves, saying it was to appease the Moon Goddess.

But it would not work. The rain would last three months. The lowlands would be completely flooded, and the surviving Packs would tear each other apart over what little hunting ground remained. The entire werewolf world would fall into chaos.

I looked across at Caelum. Rainwater dripped from his jaw, soaking his collar. His profile was sharp in the dim light of the car.

I suddenly remembered that day in my past life when the Pack fell. He stood in front of me, covered in blood, giving his life so I could escape.

"Why…" I wanted to ask. He had hated me so much, why did he still die for me?

Before I could speak, Caelum's phone rang. He answered and listened for a few seconds, then his face changed. "When did this happen? Which way did she go?"

"How long has she been gone? Why did no one call me sooner?" His voice dropped lower but grew tighter. "Fine. I got it."

He ended the call and pushed the car door open. Rain poured in.

"Odette ran away." He turned back to look at me, his eyes full of frustration. "She ran out of the house."

"She did not want to go to the Snowwolf Pack," he said. "She told me she did not want to go. I should have done something… I knew she was scared…"

His words came fast, like he was explaining to himself, or blaming me.

I watched his back and spoke softly. "Go. Drive and find her."

He hesitated. "The observation deck…"

"Another time," I said.

He looked relieved. Before he closed the door, he turned back one more time. "I will take you next time. I promise."

I said nothing. He closed the door and ran to another car. The engine started, the headlights cut through the rain, and then the car disappeared into the storm.

He did not know there would be no next time. The person he was rushing to save did not need saving. And tomorrow, I would leave for the Snowwolf Pack. What awaited me there might be the very same fate Odette was running from.

After the elder was removed, the Snowwolf Pack finally grew peace.Torben recovered slowly, but he improved each day. He stayed awake longer. He started handling Pack affairs again. He asked me once why I stayed. I told him there was still work to be done here.Later, he announced to the entire Pack that I was Snowwolf's Luna. There was nothing dramatic between us. We each did what needed to be done, and over time, we realized the other was still there.Months passed. The rain stopped. The river held. The territories did not flood. The disasters of my past life did not come. One evening, Torben stood by the window watching the sunset. He said, "It has been a long time since this territory was this quiet."I walked over and stood beside him. He did not turn, but he reached out and took my hand."Athena," he said after a pause. "Thank you for staying."A year later, the Snowwolf Pack had recovered well. That year, Torben and I had a child.A daughter. She was small when she was born, but

Two evenings later, I walked alone to the old mill west of the territory. It was far from the main buildings. No one came here. The wind carried the smell of wet earth from the river.I stood there for a while. Then I heard footsteps behind me. Light. Fast.Caelum stood in the shadow of the mill, soaked through, his eyes red. He had lost weight. Dark stubble covered his jaw. He looked like he had not slept in days.He spoke first. "I got your letter.""The flood plans..." His voice was rough. "They are already in motion. The north channel is being reinforced. People in that area are being relocated."Before he could finish, a sharp whistle cut through the air. The Snowwolf Pack's night patrol had spotted us. Lights swung across the mill from both sides, landing on our faces. The elder stepped out from the crowd, his face dark. "Meeting an outsider in the middle of the night, do you know what that crime carries?"Caelum moved in front of me.The elder gave a cold laugh. "Take them."His

The rain had been falling for twenty days straight. From morning until night, it hammered against the roof, low and constant, pressing down on everything.I stood by the window and watched water stream off the eaves and splash onto the ground below. I thought about what I had seen in my past life. The riverbanks breaking. The territories flooding. Bodies everywhere. Those images would never leave me.According to the timeline I remembered, the elder would propose live sacrifice in less than ten days. Before I came to the Snowwolf Pack, I had sent my flood control plans to my father and Caelum's father. But in the twenty days since my arrival, I had no idea what was happening outside. My phone had been taken on the first day. Snowwolf Pack rules, they said. All outside communication devices were kept for safekeeping. The room had no internet. The landline only made internal calls.I had thought about other ways to reach out, but someone was always nearby. The meal servers. The cleaners.

  • The Mate Who Died for Me Loved Another   Chapter 5

The first few days at the Snowwolf Pack, I was kept in a room next to the Alpha's quarters. Someone always watched me. I could not go anywhere. On the fifth day, I was finally brought before Alpha Torben. Before I arrived, I had heard stories about Torben Ashford. They said he was the strongest Alpha this territory had ever seen, a presence that made everyone around him feel small. But when I was led into his room, I barely recognized him.He was slumped in a chair. His face was pale and gaunt, his cheeks hollow, his eyes sunken. His fingers trembled slightly, and the tips were an unnatural gray. The elder sat to one side, watching me with heavy eyes. Two women stood nearby, relatives of the elder who had been assigned to "look after" the Alpha. One was named Lira. The other was Sera."This is the one from the Vex Pack?" Lira looked me up and down. "She does not look like much."Sera said nothing. She just stared at me with cold eyes. The elder spoke. "Athena Vex. You have arrived. You

Caelum felt the whole world collapsing around him.How could it be Athena? How could it possibly be Athena? The words Odette had said were still ringing in his ears, but they had already blurred into meaningless noise. He had never imagined Athena would leave him. Not once. In both lives, through all the years of fighting and resentment, some part of him had always believed she would stay. Even when they hated each other, she was still his. He had never thought they would part ways. But now Athena was gone. She had gone to the Snowwolf Pack.He ran out into the rain. He jumped into his car and drove to the airport at the edge of the territory. In his past life, he had chased after Odette's car with the same desperation. Back then it had been regret and guilt. Now, standing on the empty tarmac, he felt like someone had carved a hole in his chest. If he lost Athena like this, he would rather die right there. He burst into the terminal and ran straight for the security checkpoint. "Let me

That night I lay in bed, unable to sleep.Moonlight spilled through the window, painting a white square on the floor. I stared at the ceiling, wondering what would be waiting for me at the Snowwolf Pack. Then the door burst open with a loud bang.Caelum stood at the doorway, soaked through, his eyes red. He looked at me like I was his enemy. I slowly sat up, feeling like I had gone back to those years of hatred in my past life. But now I did not have the energy to fight him anymore."What happened?" I asked softly. He paused for a moment, probably not expecting me to be so calm. But then his anger came back. "Odette ate poison root. The doctor says she might not make it. Are you happy now?"My stomach dropped. In my past life, Odette had done something similar, but that was just to get out of going to the Snowwolf Pack. I had already agreed to go, so what was the point of this?"She has always been like this." I got out of bed.Odette's room smelled like herbs and blood. She lay pale o
