Chapter 5

Autor: Sweetie Moore
I shook my head impatiently, standing firm on my resignation. I added, "Phoebe, I don't know how I survived the last eight years, but right now, one thing is crystal clear: I'm breaking up with you."

Her eyes widened in disbelief as the corners of her eyes welled up with tears. "Just because of this position? Damien, why are you throwing a fit? I'm doing all of this for our company."

David patted her shoulder sympathetically before turning to speak to me in a serious tone. Yet a faint, smug smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.

"Kid, don't throw away five years over a bruised ego. If you're doing this because of me, then I simply won't join the company. Stop acting so unprofessional."

Looking at the hypocrite standing in front of me, I felt nothing but disgust. My patience ran out, so I turned and walked toward the door.

Phoebe suddenly called out behind me, "Damien, stop right there! If you walk out that door, we're really over."

I let out a cold laugh. "Great. That's exactly what I want."

While I was at my desk packing up my things, Phoebe chased after me and grabbed my arm. She insisted I hadn't properly transferred my project files and tried to block me from leaving.

Even though I cleared my computer's password and transferred every single project file off the hard drive, she kept causing a scene.

In the middle of our argument, she knocked my external hard drive off the desk, shattering it on the floor. That drive held years of architectural drawings and research materials I had painstakingly organized.

A flash of genuine anger finally cracked my indifferent expression, which seemed to satisfy her.

"What do you want?" I asked.

She smiled, thrilled. "I want you to stay at the company and help me."

"And if I say no?"

She leaned in close to my ear, her voice vicious. "Then I'll go public with David, and no one will ever know you were anything more than an employee."

I looked at the woman threatening me and found her utterly annoying. "Whatever."

After leaving the building, I immediately contacted my former architecture mentor, Professor Brown.

"Professor, I regret quitting. Is there still a place for me in the research team?"

Looking at the piles of architectural drafts covering his desk, my mentor replied stubbornly, "Nonsense! Do you think academic research is a revolving door where you can just come and go as you please?"

Feeling guilty, I apologized repeatedly, my voice trembling slightly.

"I was wrong. After stepping away from architectural research all these years, I finally realized how deeply I love it. I only feel true happiness when I'm immersed in it. Please, can you give me another chance?"

Professor Brown let out a sigh. "Fine. But you've been out of touch for years, so you're definitely rusty. If you rejoin the team, you'll have to start from the bottom doing basic drafting."

I gladly accepted. As long as I was back on the team, I had a chance to sharpen my skills again.

Meanwhile, Phoebe stormed back into her office, completely disappointed and red-eyed from anger.

David wrapped his arms around her, coaxing her gently. "Damien is just heated right now. He's like a kid; you just need to humor him.

"How about this? At my homecoming party in a few days, invite a bunch of friends and surprise Damien by officially announcing your relationship with him. He's probably just feeling wronged after having to keep it a secret all these years."

Phoebe looked guiltily at him. "That's asking too much of you. It'll steal the spotlight from your homecoming."

"It's fine. This way, you won't have to go through the trouble of hosting a separate event."

When I got home, Cora, who rarely showed weakness, was sitting at a dining table scattered with photos, tears streaming down her face.

The photos were all of me—pulling all-nighters at Phoebe's company, drinking heavily at business dinners on her behalf, which landed me in the hospital with stomach pains, no less than five times. Pictures of me with scars on my hands from cooking for her; doing all the housework and catering to her every need at home.

While I was running myself ragged between home and the office, Phoebe was constantly flying overseas under the guise of "business trips" just to see David.

Cora gathered the photos with a heartbroken expression, her tone gradually filling with rage. "When you suddenly went low-profile after chasing her so intensely for three years, I knew you two had gotten together."

"She and I are mortal enemies. I'm just asking about her so I can see if I can add fuel to the fire."…I contacted my lawyer immediately, pressing heavy charges against Phoebe. With irrefutable evidence stacked against her, she was sentenced to five years in prison.During her time behind bars, her mismanaged company collapsed. Every last bit of its assets was liquidated at court auctions, leaving her with absolutely nothing to her name. After resting and recovering for a while, I threw myself entirely into research work alongside Macy.Daily life became simple, vibrant, and deeply fulfilling. We spent long days and late nights hunched over desks side by side, completely in our element. We traveled to every corner of the country, gathering materials, conducting field studies on ancient structures, and publishing research papers. Hand in hand, we traced historical blueprints, drew detailed architectural models, and poured our hearts into conservation efforts.Four years later,

"If you're awake, we can begin the surgery."I struggled to move on the operating table, only to realize that my hands and feet were tied down.Surgery? What was she planning to do to me?A white-bearded old man in surgical scrubs stepped closer. "If the patient's subconscious mind actively resists restoring his memories, it will drastically lower the success rate of the procedure. It could even cause memory confusion, or in the worst-case scenario, permanently damage his cognitive functions."Hearing his words, I thrashed even harder, and the restraints chafed my wrists so badly that they began to bleed. He gave me a look of pity before turning to ask Phoebe, "Even with these risks, do you still wish to proceed?"Her brows knitted together as she weighed the risk. "Didn't you say earlier that you were confident? Is the risk really still that high even under general anesthesia?"The old man nodded helplessly. "The patient explicitly refuses the surgery and is experiencing extrem

"Phoebe, I'm standing here with another woman right in front of you. Do you seriously not care?"She acted as if she hadn't heard a single word, clutching David's hand tightly as though he were her absolute last lifeline."I asked you if there's still a way! Can I still make him love me again?!"Every word tumbled out alongside a stream of tears.David laughed at her absurdity. "Back when you were dating me, I didn't see you acting so ridiculously devoted! Phoebe, you will never get him back for as long as you live!"Hearing that, she yanked her hand back with all her strength, sending David crashing onto the floor."Impossible! He will love me again! Get out!"She swept everything on her desk to the ground, creating a deafening crash. Alongside the shattered items, her sanity collapsed from losing Damien. The next morning, an employee woke her up from the ruined floor of her office."Ms. Shaw, please wake up! David ran off with ninety percent of the company's cash flow!"Our

[Here's the tea! Phoebe Shaw's boyfriend isn't even sick! On the day he came in to resign, he got into a huge fight with her and ended up smashing the hard drive to pieces. I bet that's the exact day he maliciously altered the data. Besides, they weren't even together over the past five years!][No wonder! During those two livestreams, Phoebe didn't sound as if she was in love at all when talking about her boyfriend. Turns out it was all empty threats.]In an instant, the narrative flipped on its head as internet users turned their weapons directly on me. My direct messages blew up.As attention poured onto me, all kinds of fake leaks came flooding in. People even dug up claims that I had interfered in David and Phoebe's relationship, using my status as a wealthy heir to force David out of the country. They alleged that after chasing Phoebe relentlessly for three years to no avail, I used product distribution channels as blackmail to force my way into her company and harass her for

"She's taking advantage of Damien's memory loss, staying by his side every single day. If you don't speed things up, there won't be a place left for you by his side even if his memories return."Jealousy flared bright in Phoebe's eyes, instantly igniting her temper.David continued his coaxing. "Phoebe, as long as you step forward to testify, smear Damien's reputation, and leave him with nowhere else to turn, you'll be the only one there for him. When you reach out to help him then, will you still need to beg for him to come back like a fool?"The corners of Phoebe's mouth curled upward. She could already picture the scene of me meekly staying by her side.David pulled her into his arms, gently patting her back. "Phoebe, everything I do is for your sake. I don't have to be by your side, but you must have the person you love."Overwhelmed with guilt, Phoebe murmured, "I'm sorry, I just can't love two people at the same time."David let out a deep sigh. "As long as you're happy. I'

"You did great. I want to go home. Could you help me with the discharge papers?"Macy agreed, her ears turning bright red.Suddenly, the quick click of a camera shutter shattered the tender atmosphere. A shadow moved past the doorway, and Macy sprinted into the hallway after them.…Minutes later, she walked back into the room looking completely deflated."I couldn't catch them. Will whatever photo they took cause trouble for you?"I shrugged indifferently. "It's fine. We'll deal with whatever comes our way. They can't do anything to me."A few days later, Phoebe's company officially launched its new product, "Ocean Blue". At the press conference, Phoebe spoke at length about my contributions to the design, giving me full credit for the product's release and praising my hard work in leading the team.Taking advantage of the moment, a reporter in the crowd spoke up to ask, "Is this Mr. Robertson you're praising so highly present here today? What exactly is your relationship with
