Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
"General Lawson, her vital signs are dropping rapidly! The power level has exceeded the human body's tolerance limit! If we continue, she'll suffer brain death!" the technician shouted.

"If she dies, let her die here!" Sean's eyes burned with fury. He looked like a beast that had completely lost its mind.

He shoved the technician out of his way and rushed to the machine himself, gripping the red power control knob with all his strength.

"I want the truth! I want every last bit of it!"

A harsh electrical hiss filled the room.

The current surged to ten times its previous intensity, tearing through every inch of my body. My back arched violently, my spine bending into an unnatural angle as a bloodcurdling scream ripped from my throat. It barely sounded human.

The stench of burning flesh spread through the air. Blood poured from the corners of my eyes, my nostrils, and my ears, streaming down my paper-white face in ugly red trails. Every nerve in my body was stretched to the breaking point, and every inch of my skin trembled.

"Stop! Sean! Stop!"

At last, an elderly military doctor with a head of white hair could no longer stand by and watch. He charged toward the raised platform, desperate to stop the inhuman torture.

"You're going to kill her! This is public murder!"

He had barely made it up two steps when the guards seized him and dragged him away, ignoring his desperate struggle.

"Let go of me! You'll regret this! Every single one of you will regret this!"

The old man's cries echoed through the courtroom.

The enormous chamber had become Sean's personal execution ground. Everyone else had turned into a silent accomplice.

Strangely, the last fragments of my consciousness became painfully clear.

The tender memories I had deliberately buried, the moments of affection he now treated with contempt, returned to me like razor blades slicing through my mind.

I remembered the night sky above the training camp. He had wrapped his arms around me and pointed to the brightest star overhead.

"Janet, look. That's you. In my eyes, you'll always be one of a kind. You'll always shine brighter than anyone else."

I remembered a simulated combat exercise when he had saved the only emergency injector for me, then charged ahead despite his own injuries.

"Don't be afraid. I've got you. I'll always have your back."

I remembered him lovingly cleaning my beloved sniper rifle, his eyes filled with tenderness.

"When we get back from this mission, we're getting married. I want the whole world to know that you, Janet, are the only woman I'll ever call my wife."

'The only woman I'll ever call my wife.'

'I've got your back. You'll always shine brighter than anyone else.'

The sweet promises that had once carried me through countless brushes with death then sounded like the cruelest lies imaginable.

I had once loved that face more than life itself. Now, all I could see in it was a twisted, almost vengeful satisfaction.

Sean, this was the truth he wanted. Was he ready to spend the rest of his life regretting what he did?

With the last of my strength, I bit down hard on the tip of my tongue. The thick, metallic taste of blood flooded my mouth.

Then, gathering every ounce of strength I had left, I forced the words out one by one.

"Sean... Lawson… You... will... regret... this..."

My voice was faint, but the words struck him like the hardest slap he had ever received.

"I will never regret it!" He was practically feral now, the veins at his temples bulging as he screamed back at me. "You're the traitor! You're the coward! You're the one who deserves to die! Janet, I want you to watch as every one of your lies is torn apart, piece by piece!"

The moment he finished speaking, he shoved the power control knob all the way to its maximum setting.

A deafening roar exploded through the room. White light burst before my eyes, as if a nuclear bomb had detonated inside my skull.

The entire world dissolved into blinding white. Every sound, every ounce of pain, every sensation was stripped away in an instant.

My body crashed back against the restraints. Then, everything went silent.

On the machine, the line tracking my vital signs jumped wildly across the monitor.

"It's stopped... The memory extraction... was successful..."

The technician slumped to the floor, mumbling to himself.

On the raised platform, Sean gasped for breath, sweat soaking through his uniform.

He stared at the screen, and at last, a trace of triumph returned to his face. He had finally forced the truth out of the traitor.

Throughout the courtroom, everyone held their breath and stared at the enormous screen.

Arthur struggled to his feet, his eyes filled with a painful mixture of hope and grief. He was waiting for the final verdict that would clear his daughter's name.

The dark screen flickered with static. A sharp crackle filled the courtroom.

Then, a crystal-clear image suddenly appeared. It was the final piece of truth that I would have rather died under Sean's torture than let him see.

Sean's death did not cause much of a stir. The military's internal records contained only one cold, impersonal statement: [Killed in the line of duty.]In the end, he had sought his own way to atone for the sins he had committed. He left behind a final letter and entrusted it to the warden, asking him to deliver it to my parents. The letter contained only one short sentence: [Please have my ashes buried beside Janet's memorial grave.]My parents remained silent for a long time. In the end, they signed the necessary papers.Taking into account Sean's final act of service and his remorse, the military command approved the request. At the Heroes' Memorial Cemetery, a nameless stone appeared beside my headstone. It stood like a silent sentry, keeping watch over me for all eternity. In the women's prison, Chelsea learned of Sean's death through the news. She completely lost her mind."He's come for me! One year later, the military finally held a long-overdue medal ceremony in my honor. The atmosphere was solemn, and the auditorium was packed with people who had come to pay their respects. My black-and-white portrait stood at the center of a memorial platform draped in the national flag. In the photograph, I wore my military uniform, my eyes bright and determined, as if I were ready to head straight into my next mission. The military's highest-ranking commander, an old general with silver hair, personally stepped onto the stage. His movements were slow and heavy as he accepted a medal from the officer responsible for the ceremony. The medal was crafted from pure gold and shaped like a roaring flame. Known as the Blaze of Valor Medal, it was one of the highest honors the nation could bestow upon a service member. The old general approached my portrait and solemnly placed the medal on a velvet cushion beneath it.Then, he turned to face the audience and made his announcement in a

Chelsea was sent to a maximum-security women's military prison. She wore a gray prison uniform. All the glamour she had once possessed was gone. She stared at the peeling walls with bitter hatred in her eyes."I never betrayed my country! I've been framed!"She seized every opportunity to appeal her conviction, writing letter after letter with trembling hands to her superiors and to her father, General Arthur Moore."Janet and the Doctor conspired to frame me! She's the real traitor!"However, every letter disappeared into the void. Not one reply ever came.Once the pampered darling whom everyone had adored, Chelsea had become a traitor no one cared about. The fall from grace nearly drove her insane."Do you know who my father is?! Let me out!"The only responses were the guards' cold reprimands and the contemptuous stares of her fellow inmates.Everyone in the prison knew her story."Look. That's the traitor who got Ms. Yates killed.""I heard she even stole Ms. Yates's f

I lay motionless in the most advanced sterile ward at the military's central hospital. Tubes and wires covered my body, keeping me alive, while the heart monitor let out its sharp, steady beeps.Sean had been granted special permission to visit me. He wore a prison uniform, and cold steel handcuffs circled his wrists. In just a few days, he had become almost unrecognizable. His cheeks were hollow, his eyes deeply sunken, and stubble covered his face."Janet..."He sat beside my bed and carefully took my cold hand, pressing it against his rough, stubbled cheek. He rubbed it gently over and over, as if that were the only way he could make me feel his presence. Then, he began talking to me."The first time I saw you at the shooting range, you told me my grip on my rifle was all wrong. Later, you secretly modified my Type 92 pistol for me. You adjusted the barrel's balance so perfectly that even the master gunsmiths at the factory could not have done better."That time at the border,

On the outskirts of the city, a private jet was preparing to leave the country in secret. Its engines had barely begun to roar when dozens of special forces soldiers descended on the airfield and surrounded the aircraft. Their weapons were trained on the boarding stairs.Chelsea, dressed in a luxurious designer gown, was just about to step onto the stairs with effortless elegance. The moment she saw the soldiers, her smug smile froze. Her face turned deathly pale, but she quickly regained her composure.Lifting the hem of her gown, she strode arrogantly toward the officer in charge. "Do you have any idea who I am? My father is General Arthur Moore!"The commanding officer's expression remained icy and hard, like a statue cast from iron. Without hesitation, he presented the highest-level arrest warrant issued by military command."Chelsea Moore, you are suspected of treason, leaking classified military intelligence, and deliberately framing an innocent service member. On the screen, Chelsea handed the USB drive to the Doctor, then turned and detonated the explosives she had planted in advance. The deafening blast created the illusion that she had been captured and killed in action. The moment I saw her smile, however, I understood everything.I could not let the Doctor escape with the USB drive. Even more importantly, I could not let Sean be crushed by the brutal truth.Hence, I chose to fight the enemy to the bitter end.On the screen, I fired my last bullet, then drew my combat knife and slit an enemy soldier's throat. With the enemy closing in from every direction, I smashed my beloved sniper rifle just seconds before they could capture me. Then I grabbed the enemy commander and threw myself off the cliff with him.The final memory showed me being captured by enemy soldiers at the bottom of the cliff.
