Samuel’s voice shredded the silence of the empty penthouse, his knuckles white as he crushed the phone against his ear. The line crackled with a dry, sharp laugh that made his skin crawl.

"Relax, Samuel. He’s at a field trip, remember? The museum? Such a shame his security detail had a little... accident in the parking garage." Chloe’s voice was smooth, like oil over a blade. "He’s with me now.
