Chapter 2

Author: From This Day On
“What did you say?”

I looked at Rebecca’s furious face. I could not believe it.

“Have you lost your mind? The killer is Warren. He killed your parents fifteen years ago. Two murders. Fifteen years on the run. Arrest him now!”

Rebecca slapped me hard across the face.

“The one I’m arresting is you! You ran for fifteen years! Both dismemberment cases were done by you!”

I struggled to sit up. I was breathing hard. Blood from my nose dripped down my chin. I thought I heard things because I pushed myself too hard during the chase.

But the cold metal on my wrists told me this was real.

“You’ve lost your mind! The killer is Warren!”

As if it were still not enough, Rebecca stepped forward again and kicked me hard twice.

“Drop the act! My mom said that you were the killer!”

Warren stood nearby with his hands on his hips. He was out of breath. He looked at us with a strange expression, as if he did not know what to do.

Anger rushed through me, and my eyes turned red. I demanded an answer.

“Your mom has been gone for fifteen years! How did she tell you? In a dream?”

Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears. She raised the mirror in her hand and said with a quiver, “The mirror told me!

“This is the evidence. Listen. My mom used this to identify you as the killer.”

I stared at the mirror in her hand. It was the mirror from the coffee table at the crime scene. The same mirror had been there at the dismemberment case fifteen years ago.

But how could a mirror speak? That sounded even more absurd than a message in a dream!

The major dismemberment case from fifteen years ago shocked the whole of Raventon. Everyone knew about it. After the incident, the residents moved out overnight. The entire street became quiet. No one dared to live there anymore.

After all, the killer was still on the run. He could return to the scene at any time.

I stayed at my parents-in-law’s home for a full month before the killer came back. During the arrest, I held back because I was afraid of hitting bystanders.

When we got close, we fought hand-to-hand. I shot him in the shoulder, but he still got away.

For fifteen years, Rebecca and I searched day and night. We left the Raventon Major Crimes Unit to join the one in Sylvara. I had finally caught the culprit.

But she said that the killer was me. The man I had hunted for fifteen years was me.

How could that be?

Among the officers, my trainee, Jason Lloyd, could not stand it anymore. He stepped forward and tried to stop her.

“Ms. Parker, are you under too much pressure from this case? We all know what happened back then—”

I looked at Jason with hope in my eyes. He was the best recruit I had taken into the special unit. He trained under Rebecca and me and was like a son to us. He followed us on cases and even spent holidays with us.

Jason gave me a reassuring look. He was about to talk her down.

Rebecca handed him the mirror. Jason took it. He seemed to see something terrifying and quickly went silent.

“Mr. Walker, I didn’t expect the killer to be you!”

They looked at me the same way. They wanted to tear me apart to avenge my parents-in-law.

“That’s impossible! How can a mirror show who the killer is?”

I struggled with anger. I tried to get up and see what was in the mirror.

Jason kicked my knee hard and forced me back to the ground.

Rebecca took the mirror back. She called for the team to put me in the police car.

Warren stood there. He looked stunned.

“The killer is him?” he asked.

Rebecca wiped her tears. Her voice was full of grief.

“It’s him. I never thought he could be this cruel. He killed my parents!”

Then she handed the mirror to Warren, who leaned forward with curiosity.

He took the mirror, and his expression immediately changed.

Peter came over excitedly with the comparison report. I finally let out a breath of relief.“It’s Warren’s.”When he heard my answer, Peter was shocked.“Warren? But we already collected all ten of his fingerprints. How is that possible?”Seeing that Peter still did not understand, I explained Warren’s secret.“He was born with a finger deformity. I checked his hands today. There were two surgical scars. The fingerprint from fifteen years ago must have come from his smallest deformed finger. After that, he had it removed and committed a new crime. The deformed finger was kept in the plastic surgery clinic, so the current fingerprints don’t match the old ones. But according to the doctor, Warren had two transplant surgeries. There might still be a victim we haven’t found.”I frowned and told Peter everything I knew. Peter shook his head in amazement.“That’s really unexpected. He transplanted his own finger, so there was no rejection. But who would think he had eleven fingers? Wh

Warren was a grown man. Why would he go to a plastic surgery clinic?Could a clinic even change someone’s fingerprints?I got in the car and drove back to the station. I planned to check Warren’s fingers myself. The moment I walked in, Warren looked up and saw me. He started mocking me.“The killer from fifteen years ago is you.”I did not respond. I used what Peter told me and tried to trick him into telling the truth.“You’re the killer. Drop the act. We already traced the plastic surgery clinic.”Warren’s expression changed when he heard that.I pressed on.“We’ll find out who you really are soon enough. You can change your face, but you can’t erase what you did.”To my surprise, Warren started laughing.“So you found the other fingerprint. The killer is not me. That fingerprint belongs to you.”My blood ran cold when I heard that. How was that possible? How could that fingerprint be mine?Every time I handled evidence, I wore gloves. How could Warren have gotten my fi

“H-how is that possible?”I gripped my phone tightly. I could not believe it.We had already caught the killer. Were we really going to let him go again because of a lack of evidence? Rebecca heard that, and her legs gave out. She dropped to her knees in front of the grave and could not get back up.I ended the call. My tone turned heavy.“The captain said the fingerprint lifted from the mirror doesn’t match the one from fifteen years ago. Warren is not the killer from back then.“Warren has confessed to today’s dismemberment case. But he refuses to admit anything about the case from fifteen years ago. It has been too long. Without solid evidence, we can’t convict him for that case.”Rebecca clutched my shirt tightly. Her eyes rolled back. She almost fainted.“Not him? How can it not be him?”I clenched my jaw. I raised my hand and wiped my tears.“Rebecca, don’t worry. I let him get away back then. This time, I’ll catch him and give your parents peace.”I helped Rebecca home

Warren’s eyes widened. He stared hard at the mirror in my hand.I turned the mirror and faced it toward him.His face appeared in it.“Have you never seen a mirror before? It just shows whoever stands in front of it.”I said coldly to mock him. Warren looked at Rebecca in a daze. Then, he looked at Louis. Rebecca could not hold it in anymore. She covered her face and cried.“You monster! Why did you kill my parents? We had no bad blood at all!”Warren stretched his neck and tried to defend himself. “It’s clearly him! The killer is him!”I pulled Rebecca into my arms to comfort her. When I saw Warren still refusing to admit it, I raised my voice.“If there really was a mirror that could show the killer, that could reveal every suspect’s face, that would be best. None of you would get away.”Louis held the walkie-talkie and called for backup. Armed officers rushed in and took Warren into the police car.Jason ran over excitedly.“How was it, Ms. Parker? I reacted fast, right?”

“That mirror has nothing to do with me at all. If you don’t believe me, you can test it. There’s no way my fingerprints are on it!”Warren heard me and panicked. He turned around and shouted in defense.“What do you mean, it has nothing to do with you? You were afraid of leaving fingerprints, so you wrapped it in a plastic bag! I saw it myself!”I laughed even louder.“I’m not some weirdo who needs makeup. Why would I carry a mirror around? I’m not the killer.”Warren was breathing hard. His eyes were sharp and hostile.“Still won’t drop the act, huh? You’re a murderer. I saw it with my own eyes.”Rebecca stepped in to stop the argument.“That’s enough. I see you really won’t give up until you hit a dead end.”She turned to Warren.“Warren, you’re sure you saw it with your own eyes, right? We can’t let a criminal slip away easily.”Warren looked a little confused by her tone, but he still nodded hesitantly.“Officer, I’m telling you the truth. You can’t let Titus go.”Rebe

I watched Rebecca hand the mirror to Louis. I had a bad feeling. That strange mirror. Would it fool Louis as well?Louis was my senior at the police academy. I followed him everywhere back then. He treated me like a younger brother. He knew how many nights I stayed up trying to track the killer. He knew how many places I had gone to.The dismemberment scene back then was too brutal. He was the only one who insisted on going back with me. We returned again and again and searched for every possible clue. That was also when we carried out the chase together. We finally waited for the killer to return to the scene. We split up and moved in from two sides to corner him, but he still managed to escape.Louis looked at the so-called evidence in Rebecca’s hand. He was uncertain.“Rebecca, are you sure this is evidence? What can a mirror prove?”Rebecca’s expression turned serious. She seemed to think of her parents’ deaths. Her tears would not stop. She held the mirror upright and showe
