Chapter 5

Author: Anonymous
The moment I said we should check the bank transaction records, all three of their expressions shifted.

Ryan forced a smile and rubbed his hands together, stalling for time as he spoke. "Mom, what's the point of checking that? It's such a hassle. We're family. Don't you trust us?"

Victor hurried to back him up. "Exactly, Mom. Maybe we're mistaken. There could still be plenty of money in the account. There's no need to make a trip to the bank."

Even Leo nodded along. "Yeah, Mom. If we go there, we'll have to wade through page after page of records. Looking at them will give you a headache. Why don't we just forget it? We'll stop arguing, okay?"

I looked at them plotting together and smirked inwardly. Hassle? Headache? It was more like they were afraid their secret withdrawals would come to light.

Just moments earlier, they had been screaming at each other. Now that I mentioned checking the records, they suddenly stood united.

I let out a cold laugh and raised my voice. "Everyone,

After I left the bank, I called my best friend, Helen Green.Helen spent the next three hours on the phone, tearing into my sons before she finally said, "Come stay with me. I've got a room, and it's close to the hospital."I didn't bother with formalities. I packed a few changes of clothes and moved in that very day.It was a small house with a yard, planted with the roses I liked. It was quiet and peaceful.During that first week, my three sons kept coming over to look for me.Ryan showed up at the gate, shouting, "Mom, I was wrong! I'm on the verge of bankruptcy! Lend me some money to get through this. Otherwise, my whole family will starve!"I watched him shake the gate from the window, the metal clanging loudly, and felt nothing. A few days later, Victor came with Molly.Molly wore a dress and sang the nursery rhymes I had taught her, breaking into tears after a few lines and crying out, "Grandma!"Beside her, Victor dabbed at his eyes and said, "Mom, Molly misses you. I

After being criticized by the neighbors, my sons suddenly changed their tune and crowded around me, talking over one another as they tried to justify their actions."Mom, I was wrong. I really needed the money back then. I planned to return it once my business recovered, but I got busy and forgot…"Victor leaned in. "Mom, I did it for Molly. She's your only granddaughter. I couldn't afford to hold her back. I'll return the money. Please don't be mad."Leo was the best at putting on a pitiful act. He squatted at my feet, wiping his tears. "Mom, I know I was wrong. I'll throw all those shoes away. I won't spend recklessly anymore. You aren't feeling well, so please don't get upset. I'll come to the hospital every day to take care of you…"In my previous life, I might've given in.But I had already died once. I knew my sons all too well.Apologising? Returning the money? Taking care of me? At the end of the day, they were still eyeing the money I had left from selling the apartmen

At the bank, I went straight to the counter and showed my bank card to the teller. "Please print out the transaction records for this account for the past eight years. I want every deposit and every withdrawal."The teller swiped the card and looked up at me. "Ma'am, those are transactions over a long period of time. The printout will be dozens of pages and could take over half an hour. Are you sure you want to proceed?"Before I could answer, Ryan squeezed forward, smiling ingratiatingly. "Mom, why don't we just forget about it? It's such a hassle. This is my fault. The money was always meant for you anyway. Spend it however you like. I won't buy the school district apartment anymore. I won't ask about it again."After hearing that, Victor quickly joined in. "Exactly, Mom. Molly won't join the piano program anymore. It's not worth all this trouble over a little money. You aren't feeling well. Let's hurry back to the hospital."Even Leo tugged at my arm. "Yeah, Mom. I don't want th

Ever since I laid things out with my three sons, no one had come by my ward for days.I was glad for the peace and quiet, so I didn't look for any of them.Unfortunately, the calm lasted only a few days before my phone rang. It was Karen Zimmer, my former across-the-hall neighbor. She yelled frantically, "Susan! Hurry back to your old apartment! Your sons are causing a huge scene downstairs!"My heart skipped a beat. Hadn't the old apartment already been sold? What were they doing there?I asked the caregiver to notify the hospital and took a taxi back. The closer I got, the louder the shouting was. Before the car even came to a stop, I saw a crowd gathered at the entrance, old neighbors clustered together. In the middle, my sons were grabbing each other's collars and arguing.Their hair was a mess, their clothes pulled out of shape, and whatever dignity they'd had was gone.Victor pointed at Ryan, spitting with rage. "Ryan, stop lying! You were the one who bad-mouthed me to M

Victor had barely reached the door when it creaked open, and Leo walked in carrying a fruit basket.Leo glanced at Victor's flushed face, then at me, and covered his mouth dramatically. "Oh? What happened? Victor, your face is flushed! Who pissed you off?"Victor snapped, "None of your business!""You argued with Mom, didn't you?" Leo set the basket down and raised his voice. "Did you come asking Mom for money again? Honestly, Victor, that's too much. Mom just got hospitalized, and all you care about is sucking her dry. You're such an ungrateful son!""Drop the good-guy act!" Victor fumed. "What's wrong with me asking Mom for money for Molly's program fee? Spending on that makes more sense than blowing money on clothes and shoes like a bottomless pit!""So what if I like to look good? I spend my own money! At least I'm not scheming against Mom! The fund is for her retirement, not your daughter's piano program!" Leo shot back."You know nothing! That's an investment! Once Molly su
