Chapter 2

Author: Orange Blob
At 2 a.m., the doorbell rang. Someone was leaning on it nonstop while pounding on the front door with all their strength.

I got up from the couch, took my time walking over, and opened the door.

Danica stood outside, her hair disheveled, her eyes red-rimmed. She was dragging a suitcase behind her and breathing hard. She'd clearly come straight from the airport.

"Kit... Kit, have you lost your mind?!" She stormed inside and grabbed me by the collar. "Why did you touch that account? Do you have any idea what you're doing?!"

I looked down at her hand gripping my shirt and laughed. "Danica, I was about to ask you the same thing. What exactly is that money?"

"That's... that's Eveningstar Technologies' operating capital. If you start messing with it, you're going to cause serious problems."

"Eveningstar Technologies' operating capital?" I removed her hand from my collar, my voice calm. "The $300 thousand in patent royalties deposited every quarter is operating capital?"

The color drained from her face. "You... how do you know about that?"

"I also know you've been 'managing' those royalties with Kevin all this time. Haven't you?"

She took a step back. Panic flashed across her face, but it disappeared almost immediately.

Looking at me, she slowly walked to the couch, sat down, and lit a cigarette. I'd never seen her smoke before.

"You went through my email?" she asked.

"Yes." She exhaled a stream of smoke and smiled. It wasn't a guilty smile, but a relieved one.

"Maybe that's for the best." Leaning back against the couch, she looked at me. There was no guilt in her eyes, only a strange sense of calm. "Kit, what do you want to know? Well, I'll tell you. Kevin isn't a client. We've been together for two years."

She flicked ash into the tray, speaking as casually as if she were commenting on the weather. "For the past five years, you've known nothing, and you've lived a pretty happy life, haven't you?"

My fists clenched until my knuckles turned white.

She glanced at me before crushing out her cigarette. "So stop making trouble. Even if you transfer that account, it won't do you any good. The patent licensing agreements were signed under Eveningstar Technologies' seal, not your name."

"If you think you're getting everything back, it won't be that easy." She stood and smoothed out her skirt. "You're an engineer, Kit. You don't understand anything else, and you can't beat me at this."

Dragging her suitcase behind her, she walked into the master bedroom and shut the door.

I was left standing alone in the living room.

A chill spread through my entire body. She couldn't even be bothered to lie to me anymore.

The next morning, I left for work.

As I reached the entrance of the neighborhood, a black Porsche was parked by the curb.

The driver's window rolled down, and a man wearing sunglasses smiled at me.

"You're Kit Pearson?"

I stopped. "Who are you?"

He removed his sunglasses, revealing a pair of narrow eyes. "Kevin. Kevin Baker."

Blood rushed to my head.

Leaning against the car door, he looked me up and down with an amused smile. "Danica told me about the scene you made yesterday. I thought I'd stop by, see how you're doing, and have a chat."

"There's nothing to talk about." I turned to leave.

Behind me, he spoke again, unhurried, "Kit, I don't mean any harm. Honestly, I admire you. You're brilliant at what you do.

"But you know as well as I do that technology alone isn't enough. Without Danica handling the business side, those patents of yours wouldn't be worth a dime."

I stopped walking. "So?"

"So I'm here to offer you a deal." He stepped in front of me and pulled a check from the inside pocket of his suit jacket.

"Here's $500,000. Cancel the new card link, and stay out of the company's affairs from now on." He held the check out to me.

I stared at it. I didn't even make $100,000 a year. That check was worth five years of my salary.

However, those patents had generated $6 million over the last five years. He thought he could buy me off with half a million?

"No."

Kevin raised an eyebrow. "Kit, don't be stupid."

He pulled the check back and patted my shoulder. The touch made my skin crawl.

"Go home and think about it. You won't get an offer this good twice."

He got back into the Porsche. The engine roared to life, and the car disappeared down the road.

I stood there, my fists clenched tight.

Three months later, the divorce judgment was finalized. The court found that Danica had engaged in an extramarital affair and concealed marital assets during the marriage, and it approved the divorce.I was awarded the house, while she kept the car.The remaining marital assets were divided 60-40, with 60 percent going to me and 40 percent to her. After adding the $31 million settlement and the share buyback payment, then deducting legal fees and other expenses, a total of $39 million ended up in my account.Natalie told me that if I factored in the future value of my patents, the real number was far higher than that. However, I no longer cared.Money was money. Life was life. What I'd wanted was never just the money.I cut the $10,000 allowance card in half and took a photo of it.Not for revenge, but as a reminder to never let someone else define my worth as $10,000.In the end, Eveningstar Technologies survived.Danica sold Kevin Baker's 25 percent shell stake and brough

The argument lasted far longer than five minutes. In fact, it went on for a full twenty.Kevin pointed at Danica, accusing her of moving assets behind his back.Danica argued that she had earned the money and could spend it however she wanted.Yvonne sat beside them, cursing Kevin and insisting he was an outsider with no right to interfere. The three of them argued until their faces turned red, completely forgetting I was still sitting across the table. In the end, Natalie tapped the table."Everyone, time is limited. If we can't reach an agreement today, then we'll see each other in court."Just a reminder. The temporary injunction carries a daily fine of $50,000, and we're already on day four. The Intellectual Property Office has also issued an investigation notice to Eveningstar Technologies."If Mr. Baker's fraudulent capital contribution is confirmed, this won't be a civil matter anymore. It'll be criminal."The moment the word criminal left her mouth, the color drained

On the twentieth day, the court approved the asset preservation order.Three bank accounts under Danica's name were frozen. So were two under Yvonne's, and one corporate account belonging to Eveningstar Technologies.A total of $26 million in assets was frozen. When Natalie told me the number, I sat in silence for a long time.$26 million. They'd hidden that much from me.For the past five years, I'd been living on an $8,000 monthly allowance, thinking it was more than enough. At ten that morning, Danica called. This time, there were no threats or sweet talk. Her voice was hoarse, like she'd been crying."Kit, the accounts have been frozen. The company can't make payroll. More than a hundred employees are depending on those paychecks. Can you really live with that?"I held the phone but didn't answer."If it's money you want, I'll give it to you. Name your price. Let's sit down and talk. Please."It was the first time Danica had ever said please to me. In five years of marri

On the evening of the eighteenth day, I didn't go home.Instead, I checked into a hotel near the office and sat alone on the edge of the bed with my phone on silent. When I finally looked at it, there were 67 unread messages and 23 missed calls. They were from Danica, Yvonne, and Kevin. There was even a number I didn't recognize, identified as Eveningstar Technologies' legal department.I went through them one by one.Danica's messages swung wildly from threats to pleas. At first, it was "You'll regret this" and "Do you really think you can beat me?"Later, they became pleas. "Honey, can we talk?", "I know I was wrong. Please give me another chance."Yvonne was more direct. "How much do you want? Name your price."Kevin only sent one message. "Kit, this is your last chance. Sit down and talk."I didn't reply to any of them.First thing in the morning of day nineteen, my supervisor called me into his office. "Kit, someone's here to see you."I pushed open the door and found

On the seventeenth day, at exactly 8 a.m., Natalie called."The legal notice has been delivered to Eveningstar Technologies. It was signed for by the administrative manager, Lisa Cornell. The court has also accepted the application for a temporary injunction.""What about the intellectual property complaint?""It was submitted yesterday afternoon. I've already emailed you the case number.""Good.""Mr. Pearson, the next 48 hours are going to be interesting. Prepare yourself."I smiled. "I spent fifteen days preparing. What's another 48 hours?"After hanging up, I went to work as usual. At 10:30 a.m., my phone exploded. The first message was from Danica. "You sent a legal notice??? Have you lost your mind, Kit?!"The second was also from Danica. "Withdraw it immediately! Do you hear me? Immediately!"The third was from my mother-in-law, Yvonne. "You ungrateful dirtbag! My daughter took care of you for five years, and this is how you repay her?!"The fourth was from Kevin. "Ki

Natalie packed the four documents into a file envelope and handed them to me."Mr. Pearson, I'll send the legal notice tomorrow morning and email a copy at the same time. Once the 60-day countdown expires, their entire production line will be forced to shut down."I took the envelope, then suddenly thought of something."Natalie, is there any way to shorten the countdown?"She adjusted her glasses, a faint smile tugging at the corner of her lips."You're the patent holder. If you discover evidence of willful infringement, you can apply for a temporary injunction. If the court approves it, the order takes effect immediately.""Then add that."She nodded and added a note to the file.I left the law firm with the envelope in hand. It was raining outside. My phone buzzed. A message from Danica appeared on the screen. "Honey, what do you want for dinner tonight? I'm going grocery shopping."The word "honey" made my stomach churn. I replied with two words: "Anything's fine."She i

On the eighth day, my mother-in-law, Yvonne Sutton, showed up.The moment she walked through the door, she got straight to the point. "Kit, Danica told me about the stunt you pulled a while back."She sat across from me at the dining table, hands folded, impatience written all over her face."Wha
