Chapter 2

Author: The Awakened
I was immediately at a loss for words.

I gave Dad a few half-hearted replies, telling him I'd come home on my own. It took quite a bit of convincing before I finally talked my parents out of coming to pick me up.

After hanging up, I shook my head and sighed.

Honestly, neither of them was easy to deal with. If they ever found out I'd been bullied at school and locked in a storage room, they'd probably blow up the whole school.

Sure, I was just a nameless extra in this world. But this was a stereotypical romance story, after all.

Grandpa was a legendary figure in the underworld.

Dad inherited the family business, while Mom was the world's top-ranked female assassin, charging 100 million dollars per hit.

The two of them were a match made in heaven. After getting together, they had me, their one and only precious daughter.

As Dad liked to put it, it took ten generations of criminals in our family to finally produce one kid who was actually good at school.

The first time I came home with perfect scores in all three subjects when I was in elementary school, my parents looked absolutely horrified.

They suspected I'd cheated. They wondered if I'd threatened or bribed my teachers into giving me perfect scores. They even wondered if I was adopted.

They simply refused to believe I'd earned those grades myself.

It wasn't until later, when they realized I had no interest in sports and fighting, spent all my time studying, and had mastered eight languages at a young age, that they finally accepted the truth.

And when I somehow ranked first in the entire city on my high school entrance exam, becoming the city's top scholar, my parents nearly passed out from shock.

That very night, Dad excitedly surrounded the headquarters of a dozen rival gangs and blew them up one by one, setting off fireworks for me.

Mom killed every one of the top ten people on the bounty list to celebrate my achievement.

And yet, I had only one wish.

Once I started high school, I made them promise not to reveal my identity. I just wanted to study in peace.

Every time people found out who my parents were, they'd tremble with fear. Now that I finally had the chance to study as an ordinary student, I couldn't let them ruin it.

With that in mind, I crouched down and examined the storage room lock. With a few quick moves, it popped open. Having grown up surrounded by people like my parents, picking a lock was child's play.

That afternoon, I showed up in class right on time. I sat in my usual seat, opened my textbook, and acted as if nothing had happened.

The moment Sienna saw me, her eyes immediately turned red. She stared at me for the entire class, her gaze filled with hurt and defiance.

During the break, she finally couldn't hold it in anymore and came over to my desk.

"Daphne, I admit you're smart. But remember this: first place belongs to me, and I'll take it back eventually," Sienna said, her hands clutching the hem of her skirt nervously.

I looked up at her sincerely. "Besides beating me, you'll also have to beat 82 other students, too."

Sienna froze for a full second. Then she covered her face and ran off crying.

I shrugged and went back to working on my practice questions.

Not long after, Zander walked over with a dark look on his face. Wearing a charcoal-gray designer shirt, he looked every bit the dashing young heir.

"Daphne, I seriously underestimated you. Looks like you still haven't learned your lesson."

As he spoke, he reached out to grab my arm. I was just about to dodge when a hand shot out from the side and caught his wrist.

It was Leo Jamison, scion of the Jamison family. He smiled with an air of effortless elegance, but his eyes were sharp and calculating.

Leo looked down at me. "Daphne, I'll pay you. How about you give first place to Sienna?"

I tilted my head curiously. "How much are you offering?"

The arrogance on Leo's face grew even stronger. He replied smugly, "Name your price, and I'll pay it. My family has more money than we know what to do with."

I thought for a moment, then held up a hand, spreading my fingers wide.

Leo raised an eyebrow, and his smile widened. "Five million dollars? Fine, it's yours."

Then he turned to Zander with a mocking smile. "Zander, stop relying on brute force all the time. Use your brain. If money can solve a problem, why bother getting physical?"

I didn't answer right away. Instead, I asked, "But the scholarship for first place is only five thousand dollars. Why don't you give that five million directly to Sienna? Isn't she trying to rank first for the scholarship money anyway?"

Zander let out a cold laugh. "Sienna isn't some gold digger like you. Earning that money through her own hard work means more to her than anything else. You have no idea how pure-hearted she really is."

I nodded and said flatly, "But I wasn't asking for five million."

Zander frowned. "What do you want then?"

"I want… "

I slowly lowered four of my fingers, leaving only my middle finger raised. Without making a sound, I mouthed two words at him—Fuck you.

Leo's face instantly turned red. His refined, gentle facade disappeared, replaced by a dark, menacing look. "Daphne Quinton, don't push your luck."

I stepped backward. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted our homeroom teacher, Cecelia Moore, walking toward us.

So, I took a deep breath and yelled at the top of my lungs, "Ms. Moore, I want to report something! Leo is trying to bribe me with five million dollars to give first place to Sienna!"

The living room went silent for three whole seconds.Dad suddenly scooped me up and hoisted me over his shoulder. He carried me around the room, laughing and spinning in circles."My daughter is the top scorer! My daughter is the top scorer!" he shouted excitedly.Mom stood there with tears welling up in her eyes, though she still sounded annoyed. "Put her down. What if you drop her?"Without missing a beat, she pulled out her phone and made a call."Hello, help me look up the home addresses of the students who got the second- and third-highest SAT scores in the state this year. I want to send their families some gifts as a little thank-you," Mom instructed smoothly. She paused, then added with a completely serious expression, "Tell them I'm thanking them for not scoring higher than my precious daughter."Dad stared at the results page on his phone and checked it at least twenty times."I can die a happy man now," he declared, bursting with pride. "Our family has produced the t

Sienna suddenly took a step backward, her face twisting with disgust. She bit down hard on her lower lip and darted a quick, dismissive glance at the four scions. Then, she quickly averted her gaze and raised her voice defensively."I never even liked any of them!" she shrieked. "They were the ones who insisted on doing all this for me. I never asked them to hurt anyone!"Zander jerked his head up and stared at Sienna in sheer disbelief. "But you told us you liked each of us. And you never objected to what we did for you," he protested."When did I ever say that?" Sienna cut him off coldly, blinking her eyes innocently. She crossed her arms, feigning complete ignorance. "You guys must have imagined it. I never said anything like that."She paused and added with a frown, "And how could you do something like that to a classmate? That's horrible."She turned to my parents, her voice filled with panic. "Mr. and Mrs. Quinton, whatever they did is on them. I really don't know a t

When my parents saw me wake up, both of them let out a sigh of relief.Dad immediately pulled me into his arms, his hand patting my back as his booming voice nearly rattled my eardrums."I knew my daughter would be fine. She's tough as nails!" Dad declared proudly.Mom rolled her eyes right beside us and coldly called him out, "I wonder who was crying his eyes out at home just now and nearly ruined his own father's birthday celebration."Dad muttered defensively under his breath, "You weren't any better. You nearly passed out the second you heard our daughter was in trouble."I looked up and glanced around. The powerful figures who had been radiating such murderous auras just moments ago were now smiling at me with warm, friendly expressions.I thanked them in a hoarse, shaky voice, "Thank you, everyone. I'm sorry for all the trouble."A chorus of booming voices erupted around me in an instant."Think nothing of it!""Anyone who bullies you is picking a fight with all of us!"

More and more people stepped out of the helicopters in a steady stream. An elderly man slowly descended the steps, leaning on a cane. Four bodyguards followed closely behind him.A middle-aged man stepped out with a cigar between his teeth. He narrowed his eyes and scanned the people across from him, a faint, unreadable smile playing at the corner of his mouth. The underground fight club's owner loosened his tie. An old knife scar stretched from behind his ear down to his collarbone, standing out sharply in the daylight.Their sharp, predatory eyes swept across the scene. Zander and the others instinctively took half a step back. Their expressions kept changing. But what shocked them most was that all those powerful figures gathered around me."My poor Daphne. She's been through so much," an elderly man murmured tenderly."It's all our fault for not looking after her properly. Now everyone thinks they can bully her," another man muttered, his voice filled with guilt. The four

Simon's face twisted in sheer disbelief, his voice cracking as he shrieked, "Mr. Young, are you sure you've got the right person? How could you possibly know Daphne?"By then, Henry had already ordered his men to carry me out of the trunk. He fixed Simon with an icy stare."I met her and her parents recently. Do you think I'd get the wrong person?" Henry replied sharply. The color instantly drained from Simon's face. Staring blankly at my limp, unconscious body, he was at a loss for words. How could Daphne possibly be related to the Young family? How could this be happening?A deep look of regret flashed in Simon's eyes. After confirming that I was not in any critical danger, Henry finally raised his gaze back to Simon."Tell me. Why did you hurt her?" he demanded.Simon's expression shifted uneasily, but he refused to speak.Henry didn't bother asking a second time. He motioned for his men to grab one of Simon's subordinates and pressed a gun against his temple. The man's leg

But everyone in the underworld knew that its real power lay in the shadows. The Youngs were notorious for their ruthlessness and decisiveness. They never gave their enemies a chance to fight back. For years, the Mercer family had done everything possible to avoid conflict with the Youngs, just to keep the peace. But Simon had never imagined Henry would show up here in person. He took a deep breath, trying to suppress the shock and fear rising inside him. Then he forced a respectful smile. "Mr. Young, I didn't realize it was you. What a small world."He chuckled nervously. "Since you've come here personally, you must have something important to take care of, right? I have something urgent to deal with too, so I should get going."As he spoke, he c
