MasukChapter 3 – The Shadow at the Window
“What are you all hiding from me?” I demanded, my voice trembling with anger. “Why have I never heard of the Moonborn heir? Why tonight? Why right after we severed our bond? How is any of this connected?” My questions echoed through the corridor, swallowed by the storm raging outside. Vaughn didn’t answer. He kept walking through the manor, rainwater dripping from his dark hair and broad shoulders, his expression carved from stone. I hurried after him, desperate for answers, so consumed by my own panic that I barely noticed the Moon Council agent remained behind in the courtyard. Only when I glanced back did I realize he was gone. Vanished. As if he had never existed. “Alpha Nightfang!” I snapped. “I’m talking to you. Answer me!” Frustration finally exploded from my chest in a sharp roar. The sound rippled through the corridor, and Vaughn stopped for a single heartbeat. Then he spoke without turning around. “Don’t involve yourself in this. It’s none of your business.” The coldness of his voice stung worse than the rain. He stepped into his chamber, grabbed a black shirt from the closet, and pulled it over his head in one swift motion. Without sparing me a glance, he disappeared into his study. I stood there, soaked and shaking, trying to understand what had just happened. “Look,” I began, forcing myself to remain calm. “Whatever happened out there, I understand if you don’t want to talk about—” A furious growl exploded through the room causing the air to tremble. And I froze. Vaughn turned, his golden eyes blazing. “No, Diana. You listen to me.” His voice was low and dangerous. “Whatever happened tonight is not your concern. Take Vanessa and leave this manor as soon as possible. Do you understand?” The words hit me like a blade. 'Take Vanessa and leave.' He didn't bother to say 'stay safe'. Neither the words like 'I’ll protect you' came out of him. 'Leave' was all he cared to say. Pain twisted through my chest. 'Had I really loved this man once? Had my Vaughn ever truly existed, or had I spent three years loving a stranger?' I swallowed hard and looked away. Because none of that mattered anymore. Now it was only Vanessa who mattered for me. And I would protect my daughter even if I had to walk away from this pack forever. “Fine,” I whispered. Vaughn didn’t look at me again while I turned and walked out, slamming the study door behind me. --- Earlier – Three Years Ago The memory struck without warning. Vaughn’s hand tightened around mine as he pushed open a pair of carved oak doors. Sunlight poured through the tall windows, bathing the room in gold. The new mating ring on his finger glimmered, and mine sparkled beside it. “This will be our room from now on,” he murmured near my ear. “Do you like it?” The deep warmth of his voice sent a shiver through me—not fear, but the intoxicating pull of a newly formed bond. “It’s beautiful,” I laughed. He swept me into his arms effortlessly, carrying me across the threshold before pressing a gentle kiss to my lips. As if it was his way to promise. A kind of vow beneath the Moon Goddess about never to break this bond. “And what else is beautiful?” he whispered, his breath brushing the sensitive skin of my neck. My cheeks burned as he lowered me onto the bed and hovered over me with a tenderness that made my heart ache. “You,” I breathed. His smile had been soft then, it was real. For that brief moment, I had believed happiness could last forever. --- A violent bang shattered the memory. I jerked upright. The nursery window slammed repeatedly against the frame as the storm intensified outside. Moonlight flickered through the clouds, illuminating Vanessa sleeping beside me. She trembled in her sleep. Without delaying any further I hurried to her side and stroked her silver hair gently. “It’s all right, sweetheart,” I whispered. “Everything will be fine. I promise.” The words tasted more like a lie. Yet I leaned down and kissed her forehead, and in that instant I made my decision. 'Tomorrow, I would take Vanessa and leave the Nightfang Pack forever. I won't be looking back. I will never ask for a second chance. Because freedom for us both was just enough. Just then a sudden scent drifted through the room. It was somewhat wild, ancient and dangerous. More importantly I realised it was the same scent from the gates. And as soon as the realisation hit me ice raced down my spine. My wolf rose instantly, snarling. Vanessa. 'Nothing could happen to her.' I slowly lifted my head. My eyes drifted across the room and then I saw it. A shadow stood beyond the nursery window. Tall... Motionless... Watching. My heart slammed against my ribs. Quickly I reached for the mind link instinctively. 'Vaughn!' But except for silence I found nothing. It seemed like the bond was gone. And I had been shut out completely. Panic clawed through me. I forced myself to stay calm for Vanessa’s sake and slowly rose from the bed. The shadow remained perfectly still while rain streamed down the glass. Then lightning flashed. And in that fraction of second, while the light fell on the window I saw the figure wearing a black cloak. In its hand was a silver dagger etched with the crescent symbol of the Moon Council. The same one that I saw earlier tonight. But this was not the man from the council. He was someone else. My blood turned to ice as I thought about the Council agent from earlier tonight. 'Hadn’t he disappeared? Or was he killed? And who is this man?' The shadow lifted one finger and pressed it against the glass. Looked like a kind of silent warning. Vanessa whimpered in her sleep. I grabbed her immediately, clutching her against my chest as another crash of thunder shook the manor. The nursery door burst open before I could move. Vaughn stormed inside. His gaze swept the room, landing on the figure at the window. For the first time since I had known him, genuine fear crossed his face. “Diana,” he said sharply, “get away from the window!” The cloaked figure smiled. Slowly, impossibly, it stepped through the closed glass as though the barrier were made of water. Vanessa woke with a terrified cry. The stranger lowered the hood. Dark hair spilled over pale shoulders. And then, finally red eyes met mine. My breath stopped. I was staring at a man I had never seen before, yet something in his presence felt disturbingly familiar—like a memory I had never lived, or one I had been forced to forget. However the rogue’s expression was calm, almost sorrowful, as if he had finally reached the end of a long hunt. “Don’t be afraid,” he whispered. “I am not your enemy.” Vaughn’s wolf growled violently. The rogue’s eyes shifted to Vanessa, and something sharp flickered across his face—possession, intent, certainty. “She has her mother’s scent,” he murmured. “Who are you?” My arms tightened around my daughter while I whispered. The rogue looked directly at me as if he heard what I asked. Just then another lightning split the sky and I watched as the man in black stepped forward.Chapter 46 - The Prophecy of the MoonbornDiana's P.O.V.The moment I landed on the broken stones that had collapsed into the underground passage, the stench hit me. Blood mixed with something else, like rotten earth. Something foul and ancient that had been trapped beneath the temple for far too long. But then another scent reached me. One I would have recognized anywhere.Vaughn... My mate. His scent was buried beneath blood and pain, but it was there. I realised he was close, causing my heart to slam against my ribs. Every instinct inside me screamed at me to run toward him.My silver-white fur began to glow again. The power beneath my skin stirred. It moved through my body like a living storm, crawling beneath my fur and gathering around my bones.I took a step forward. Then a voice stopped me. 'No.'I froze. Because I knew that voice. I had heard it before. Inside my dreams. Inside my memories. Inside the darkness that had followed me through every door I had opened.'You shouldn
Chapter 45 - When Her Power StruckVaughn's P.O.V.For one terrifying moment, I could do nothing but stare at Diana. She stood on the other side of the Ancient Wolves, surrounded by the ruins of the temple, her silver-white fur glowing so brightly that the darkness seemed to retreat from her.I had seen Diana's power before. But this wasn't the Diana I remembered. Something about her had changed, something I didn't understand yet. Her presence felt heavier, older, almost impossible to comprehend. The silver light radiating from her body seemed to pulse with a life of its own, and even from where I stood, I could feel the pressure of it against my skin.I didn't understand what had happened to her. I didn't know how much stronger she had become when I was gone. And I certainly didn't know what she was capable of now.But I knew what the Ancient Wolves were capable of.They had tortured me without effort. They had restrained me as though I were nothing more than an ordinary wolf. They
Chapter 44 - Between Her and the Ancient WolvesVaughn's P.O.V.“Diana!”I screamed her name until my throat burned, throwing every ounce of strength I had left into the silver chains binding me.I pulled against the shackles around my wrists with everything I had. Then I planted my feet against the stone floor and used my entire body weight to wrench the chains around my ankles. The silver had already cut deep into my skin, and blood coated my wrists, making them slick enough that I tried desperately to twist my hands free.It didn't work. For werewolves, silver wasn't merely a weakness. When we were completely restrained by it, we were almost helpless.Almost. But not tonight.I gritted my teeth and pulled again, harder than before. The chains rattled violently, and the wall behind me groaned.I could feel the metal restraints digging deeper into my flesh, but I refused to stop. I kept shaking the chains, twisting my body and forcing whatever strength remained inside me into every m
Chapter 43 - The beginning of the wrathDiana's P.O.V.If my powers had been able to show me what would happen after a certain decision in my past life, then perhaps they could do the same in this life.I had to try.I needed to know what was waiting for us—for me, Vaughn, and Lucien.I reached deep inside myself and searched for that strange, ancient force that had always seemed to exist just beyond my grasp. This time, however, I wasn't reaching for it blindly. I had already touched it before, had already felt what it was capable of, and somehow that made it easier to summon. The moment I called upon it, my entire body seemed to catch fire.Silver light erupted around me, brighter than anything I had ever seen, until the temple disappeared completely. And then I saw him.Vaughn.My Vaughn. He was suspended in the air, bound in heavy silver chains that cut into his wrists and ankles. His head hung forward, blood running down his chest from the deep wound across his throat. Beneath hi
Chapter 42 - The Betrayal Diana's P.O.V. The darkness disappeared, and I was no longer standing at the edge of the cliff. Suddenly, the warmth of the afternoon sun touched my skin as the scent of silver roses drifted through the air. Somewhere nearby, a stream flowed through the royal gardens, its gentle sound blending with the distant voices of servants moving through the palace grounds. I looked down at myself. A long white dress covered my body, embroidered with delicate silver patterns that shimmered beneath the sunlight. For a moment, I simply stood there, trying to understand what I was seeing and why everything felt so real. Then I heard a familiar voice. "You've been staring at that page for five minutes." I turned and found Vaughn sitting beneath the shade of a large tree, his sword resting beside him as he watched me with an amused expression. I glanced down at the book in my hands quickly before replying, "I have not." "You have." "I was just thinking." "No, you we
Chapter 41 - The Game of BetrayalDiana's P.O.V.I stood at the edge of the cliff, staring at the endless ocean stretching beneath the darkening sky. The wind swept through my hair, carrying the scent of salt and the distant forest behind me. I still couldn't understand why this place felt so familiar. Or why my heart felt so strangely peaceful whenever I stood here. This was the same cliff where I had once stood in Lucien's arms. The memory of his embrace still lingered somewhere inside me, warm and painfully beautiful. But now I knew that this wasn't the present.I was just remembering. But I didn't know what exactly I was remembering yet.Slowly I turned my eyes towards the place where he was still sitting quietly.Vaughn.He was sitting alone a short distance away, near the edge of the cliff, his back resting against a large stone as he stared silently at the sea. And no matter how much I looked at him he looked lost in his thoughts. There was no sword drawn, no guards surrounding
