Chapter 3

Autor: Perfect Timing
It was my uncle, Cole, who had shown up. He quickly sized up the situation inside the room.

The veins on his neck bulged in an instant. Even the veins on his forehead were showing.

He charged right in and punched Robb square in the face.

Then, he hastily took off his suit jacket to cover me.

After that, he turned back to Robb and pinned him to the ground before unleashing a flurry of punches on him.

“You scumbag! You call yourself a man? She’s your daughter!

“I’m going to kill you right here. Don’t test me!”

Robb was beaten mercilessly. The only thing he could do was cover his head while begging for mercy.

“Stop! Stop! It’s a misunderstanding! It’s all a misunderstanding!”

Cole stopped at last. He pulled him up by the collar to interrogate him.

“What were you trying to do to your daughter?”

Robb spat out a mouthful of blood before scrambling for an explanation, “I wasn’t trying to do anything. I was just trying to scare her!”

Cole turned to me with a pained expression in his eyes.

“Isabel, you can tell your uncle the truth. Did he try to strip you?”

I shook my head and told him, “He didn’t do anything. I was the one who tied myself up for fun.”

“What?”

Cole looked at me in disbelief.

“He must have tied you up…”

I cut him off sharply, “I've told you I asked for it!”

He tilted his head and seemed even more baffled than before.

“Isabel, does he have some dirt on you somehow?

“You can tell me. I’m your uncle, and I promise you I will have your back no matter what!

“I’ll even put my life on the line and take him out right here!”

I shook my head and insisted again, “No.”

Robb got up from the ground. He wiped a trace of blood from the corner of his mouth and smiled gloatingly.

“Listen to your niece, she said it herself!”

Cole glared at him, “Consider yourself lucky. I’ll make sure you get what’s coming later!”

Then, he squatted low in front of me and held me firmly by the shoulders, “They’re trying to save your mother’s life in the hospital now. You have to come with me to see her!”

I forcefully shrugged off his hand and cried out, “I’m not coming with you!

“Even if she dies, I won't see her!”

Cole’s brows were furrowed tightly. He was frozen with shock.

That was the moment he decided he was done bickering with me. Without a word, he carried me over his shoulder and strutted outside.

I squirmed fiercely, but it was no use.

“Let me go! I said I'm not going!”

Then, he forcibly shoved me into the car and sped towards the hospital where my mother was.

“Your mother is suffering from blood loss. They’re trying to resuscitate her now.

“The doctor says the knife was only a centimeter away from her heart.

“She was still murmuring your name moments before she lost consciousness. She was so worried you would be scared by what happened.”

His voice was choked up with tears by this point. I noticed he had an iron grip on the steering wheel.

The radio was playing a live talk show where viewers could call the station.

Soon, a caller called in. She sounded completely hysterical.

“What is that Isabel girl thinking? Her mother shielded her from a knife, and she didn't even bother to glance at her mother before leaving! How could she be so heartless?”

The host agreed, “That’s right, we’re trying to make sense of it too. How much bitterness must she feel toward a mother who has shown her nothing but profound love?”

That was right, my mother loved me more than anything else.

Her love was to the point of being unconditional.

I remember an episode when I made a remark about how ugly the school’s meal card looked.

She proceeded to deposit a hundred thousand dollars into the meal card and made it the best-looking meal card in the entire school.

I stared at the scenery rushing past outside the window. Without warning, I reached for the handle and pulled.

Then, I jumped out of the car while my uncle screamed in the background.

  • The Mother I Left Behind   Chapter 11

My mother smiled faintly. That was when the prosecutor presented new evidence. The diary, along with the pictures from the secret room, was projected on the screen. My mother's smile dropped in an instant. She was horrified to the point of shaking. There was an unmistakable look of horror and disbelief in her eyes.“No… how could you…”Then, the prosecutor turned to me and motioned, “Miss Isabel, you may now provide your testimony as a witness.”I got up and walked to the witness stand.I did not look at anyone. My gaze was solely fixed on the pale-faced woman in the defendant's stand.I picked up the diary.“April 15th. Sunny Day. When Isabel smiled at me today, I noticed how her eyes looked just like Astrid’s.”My voice echoed across the silent courtroom.I did not continue reading its contents and proceeded to shut it instead. Then, I turned to my mother and stated blankly, “You don't love me.“You only love that girl who looks just like me. Your deceased twin sister,

The police sirens stopped blaring when it drew closer to the house. We stopped hearing Robb’s cunning laughter. It was followed by the sounds of him running downstairs and shouting at the top of his voice.“Here! Thieves! Officer, quick! They snuck into my ex-wife’s secret room!”Soon, we heard more footsteps rushing up the stairs and into the bedroom.“Whoever is inside, listen up! This is the police! Open the door and surrender yourselves immediately!”Cole took a deep breath before speaking."Officer! I am Cole Williams from the Williams Corporation! The person who called you is Robb Payton. He's a known criminal with a prior history! He's the one who locked us in!"Then, Robb began to protest."Officers, don't believe him! He's making false accusations. It was him and his sister who conspired against me, and now he's the one trying to steal from his sister!"The officer spoke up again. His voice was authoritative and not to be defied."I don't care who you are! Open the d

Midnight at the family home.Cole unlocked the door with the spare key.“Hurry up, we only have twenty minutes.” He whispered under his breath, sweat forming beads on his forehead.“I bribed a security guard to disable the surveillance system, but he can only do it for so long.”We went upstairs to my mother's bedroom.I went up to a mirror as tall as the room.“It’s here.”I held my hands along the edge of the mirror to feel for the secret mechanism. Soon, I pressed against a raised edge. The mirror silently slid to the side to reveal a bulky metal door behind it.It had a fingerprint sensor and a password panel.Cole was taken aback.“I never knew there was a hidden door at all.”“We don’t have her fingerprint.” I turned to my uncle. “Do you have any clue what the password might be?”He shook his head.He tried every combination he could think of, but the door wouldn’t budge.Time was ticking by.Cole was starting to pace anxiously back and forth.“We have to go be

When the police showed up, my mother’s initial reaction was that of shock. Then, she began to howl with laughter as if she had lost her mind.“Cole, my dear brother.“How could you call the police on me for the sake of an outsider?”She pulled away from me and slowly got up while straightening her clothes. In an instant, the madness that possessed her had vanished. It was replaced with a stoic and commanding expression.“Officer, I think there must be some misunderstanding.“I was only playing with my daughter.”Cole rushed to shield me with his body.He jabbed a finger at my mother, and when he spoke, his voice was shaking.“Playing a game? You were choking her. What kind of game is that?“Cassandra, what do you think you’re doing to Isabel?”Her expression twitched. She tried her best to compose herself before launching into an explanation.“I don’t know what you’re talking about.“Isabel has been very unstable lately. You can’t just take what she says at face value.

When my mother woke up, she seemed to have turned into another person. She stopped obsessing over me and no longer pestered me with questions. All she did was stay silent by my side while peeling apples for me and making sure I had water to drink. There was a vacant and depressed look in her eyes.Meanwhile, two more bodyguards were stationed outside the ward. The camera disguised as a smoke detector was still inside the room. It continued to flicker with a faint red light.I knew she had not given up.All she did was change her approach. It was a gentler approach, but it was also a more suffocating one.I decided I had to find a way to contact my uncle. One night, while my mother was using the bathroom, I grabbed the spare phone I had hidden under the table to send my uncle a text.“I need your help investigating someone. Her name is Ingrid Williams.”As soon as I sent the text, my mother stepped out of the bathroom. She stared at me blankly from the doorway with my other

She sounded so helpless, as if she were on the verge of collapse.I turned to her and smiled stiffly before stating, “I want to go home. Back to Robb’s.”“What?”Both of them cried out exasperatedly in unison.“Isabel, do you have any idea what you’re talking about?”My mother became agitated and took my hand.“That’s not a place fit for anyone to live! He’s going to kill you!“I’d rather die than let you go back to him!”She was beginning to spiral again.“Everything I do is all for you! Why won’t you understand?!“What is it that you see in him? He’ll only hurt you!“I'm the only one who truly loves you! I'm your mother!”My uncle was also beside himself with rage.“Isabel! You must have lost it! What will it take for you to stop? You’re going to be the death of your mother!“She took a knife to the chest for you and almost died! She was willing to give up everything for you. All just for you to choose that poor excuse of a man over your mother!“Why? Tell us why you a
