Chapter 3

Author: Bright Lights
Maisie had also assumed all along that the person she was getting engaged to would be Arlo.

Clenching my jaw, I threw every gift Maisie had given me over our three years together into the trash, from the clothes to the stuffed animals to the cologne.

Mom walked in, ignored my red-rimmed eyes, and took Grandma's pearl necklace from my drawer.

I stood up to stop her. "That's mine! Grandma left it to me!"

"Yours, his, what's the difference?" Mom frowned. "Arlo needs it for the wedding. He's your own brother. Family doesn't keep track of what belongs to who."

Family did not keep track. I almost laughed.

Whenever Arlo used my things, nobody kept track of anything. Yet whenever I touched anything of his, even something as small as a pen, I got a finger jabbed in my face and an earful.

In the end, it only ever meant everyone helping Arlo take what was mine, until nothing in this house truly belonged to me. Even this room was not safe. They wanted to take it for him too.

Mom had barely left when Dad came in. He looked around my room and frowned. "Your room gets good light, and it's big. Arlo needs space to get ready for the wedding, so give him your room and move into the guest room."

I looked at him. "Dad, this is my room."

"Your room?" Dad said impatiently. "Is there a single thing in this house I didn't pay for? You'll sleep wherever I tell you to. Arlo's wedding is a big deal. Can't you give him a little leeway?"

"I've been giving him leeway for over 20 years," I said.

Dad froze for a moment, and then his face darkened. "Jude, what's with that attitude? I ask you to move rooms, and you start keeping score with me? I raised you, and this is how you talk to me?"

I did not argue any further.

Arguing was useless. In this house, Arlo was always right.

I started packing my things.

At some point, Lorna had appeared in the doorway. She came in and picked up a box. "Let me help."

"Lorna, do you think this family would be better off without me?" I asked suddenly.

She paused. After a long moment, she frowned at me. "Don't talk nonsense. If Arlo hears you say things like that, he'll take it to heart.

"Don't put him in a bad mood."

Arlo again. It seemed like everything about me had to step aside for Arlo.

I curled up on the bed in the guest room and hugged my knees.

It was fine. In six more days, I would be bound to the spirit of that mountain as her husband. When that day came, I would give up my family and the woman I loved.

With that thought in mind, I fell into a deep sleep.

For the next few days, the house was as hectic as a war zone. People from the wedding planning company came and went, along with wave after wave of photographers and florists.

My old room was turned into a temporary dressing room, its floor covered in sample suits and decorations.

Every day, Arlo stood in front of the mirror in a different suit, turning this way and that. Mom fussed over his collar beside him, Dad snapped pictures on his phone, and Lorna coordinated everything else.

They were one big happy family.

Meanwhile, I had been put in the dark, damp guest room, and my only job each day was to stay out of the way.

The housekeeper who brought my meals looked at me with sympathy, yet she did not dare say a word.

On the third night, I realized I could no longer taste anything.

I chewed the pot roast on my plate for a long time, but all I could make out was a vague greasiness. I could not tell salty from sweet, savory, or spicy.

I set down my fork. I understood then that "leave everything behind" did not only mean leaving my family behind. It meant everything that made me human.

On the fourth day, my hearing began to fade.

My family's voices sounded muffled, as if they were coming through a thick layer of water. Unless I listened carefully, I could not make out what they were saying at all.

On the fifth day, I stood on the balcony with the sunlight falling on me, yet I could not feel any of its warmth.

Morwen paused, and then she smiled. It was the first time I had ever seen her smile. It was like snow melting and spring flowers blooming, and the whole palace seemed a little brighter."By human reckoning, I'm a little over 3,000 years old."My jaw dropped. "Over 3,000? So you've watched empires rise and fall?""I have."I suddenly felt nervous. "Have you ever had another husband?"She looked at me, her eyes warm with amusement. "No. You're the first, and you'll be the only one.""Really?"She reached out and wiped the tear tracks from my face. "Really. I waited 3,000 years before someone finally gave me a little wooden bird."My face went hot."So does that mean we're married now?" I asked quietly. She shook her head. "Not yet. When a mountain spirit marries, there are rites. We have to honor the mountain, make our vows before the heavens, and seal our bond. Are you willing?"I looked into her eyes and nodded solemnly. "I am."She smiled and pulled me into her arms.Ou

The palace sat at the very top of Greymantle Mountain, wrapped in clouds and mist. With its soaring spires and arches, it looked like something out of a fairy tale. The floors were smooth white marble, and glowing crystals set into the walls filled the great hall with a soft light.I looked around in a daze. "Where are we?"Morwen looked at me. "My palace. From now on, it's your home too."Home.The word made my eyes sting. After more than 20 years, I finally had a home that was truly my own.Morwen showed me around the palace. Every room was beautifully furnished and warm. In the innermost bedchamber, the bed was spread with a silk quilt, and the curtains around it were embroidered with a pair of swans."This is where we'll live," she said.I sat on the edge of the bed and ran my hand over the soft quilt. Then something came back to me. "Morwen, you said before that you've known me for a long time?"She paused. Then she sat down beside me and took something from the folds of

Arlo did not deny it.Maisie's expression darkened until it was almost unrecognizable. She had only agreed to get engaged to Arlo because he seemed gentler. Compared to me, always a little distant and timid, he had made her feel safer. In the end, she had been nothing more than a prize Arlo had won, as if she were a piece of property. For someone like that, she had thrown away the man who had truly loved her.Full of regret, Maisie turned to me. "Jude, I'm sorry. I was blind. I didn't see him for who he really was. Come home with me, and we can start over. I swear I'll treat you right this time. I'll never let you get hurt again—""Enough."I said it quietly, cutting her off. My voice was not loud, yet the noise at the shrine's entrance died down at once.I looked at the people in front of me. Mom sat on the ground sobbing, and Dad stood there in a daze. Lorna was full of guilt, and Maisie's eyes were full of regret. They were all sorry. They were all apologizing.Yet as I loo

"Mom and Dad's love, Lorna's love, even your fiancée—everything you had, all of it should've been mine! And you? You deserved to be ruined!"A deathly silence fell over the shrine.Dad went rigid where he stood.Mom turned to Arlo in disbelief, her voice trembling. "Arlo, this isn't true, is it? Tell me it isn't true!"Arlo's face had already gone white as a sheet. He watched Mom fall apart, and then he suddenly began to laugh under his breath. When the laughter finally died down, he admitted it without a shred of hesitation. "I did it. Don't look at me like that. If you hadn't insisted on having Jude and pouring everything you had into him, why would I ever hate him?"Mom burst into tears, and they streamed down her cheeks. "How can you say that? You're both my own flesh and blood. I love you both!"Arlo reacted as if he had just heard the funniest joke in the world. "Don't give me that! Every parent has a favorite!"He yanked up his left hand, revealing an old light brown sc

"Is that what you call doing what's best for me?"Mom's crying stopped abruptly, and panic flashed across her face.Dad lost his patience. He pointed at Morwen and turned to Lorna. "What are you standing around for? Get rid of this woman! Bring Jude home! I refuse to believe all of us can't handle one random woman!"Lorna gritted her teeth and charged forward, ready to drag me out by force.Morwen raised her hand slightly, and an invisible force hurled Lorna backward. She slammed hard onto the stone steps at the shrine's entrance and coughed up blood."Lorna!" Arlo cried out and ran to her.My parents panicked and rushed over to help her up.Dad stared at Morwen in horror. "What are you?"Morwen did not answer. She only looked down at me and reached out to smooth my windblown hair."It's okay now," she said softly. As I looked at her, my eyes suddenly stung. In over 20 years, she was the first person who had ever stood in front of me and told me it was okay.Something seeme

Lorna snapped out of it and hurried toward me. "Come home with me. Whatever this is, we can talk about it at home."She reached for my arm, and I instinctively took a step back.Morwen stepped in front of me.Lorna's hand closed on empty air, and only then did she notice Morwen. She looked her up and down and frowned. "Who are you?"Morwen said nothing. She only stared back coldly, her gaze as indifferent as someone looking down at an insect. The look sent a chill down Lorna's spine, yet she forced herself to keep going. "I asked you a question! Who are you? Why are you with my brother?"I stepped out from behind Morwen."She's my wife," I said calmly."What?"Everyone stared at me in shock.Mom shrieked, "Jude, what are you talking about? What wife? Your brother's prophecy hasn't been broken yet. How could you get married? And who is this woman anyway? Where did you meet her? How long have you known her?"My voice was flat. "I've known her for seven days. Seven days ago, yo
