Chapter 6

Author: Bright Lights
Before Lorna could finish, I opened the door and asked her to leave. She pinched the bridge of her nose and had no choice but to get up and head out.

As she brushed past me, her hand touched my arm. She froze. "Jude, why are you so cold? Are you not feeling well?"

She grabbed my hand and held on tight.

For a moment, I thought she actually cared about me.

Before I could say anything, Arlo called. "Lorna, where are you? Something's wrong with my suit. Can you come take a look?"

Lorna let go of my hand and spoke into the phone. "Coming! I'll be right there."

Without another glance at me, she hurried off. The moment the door closed, every last bit of color drained from my face.

On the seventh day, Mom, Dad, and Lorna all went with Arlo to his wedding photo shoot.

I listened to them leave in high spirits. Then I changed into my best clothes and walked out the door too.

I hailed a cab and gave the driver the address. "The old shrine on Greymantle Mountain."

The driver glanced at me. "Kid, that place is in the middle of nowhere. What are you going out there by yourself for?"

"To get married," I said.

The driver paused, probably thinking I was joking. He chuckled and pulled away from the curb.

The car headed out of town. The city skyline faded behind us, and the outline of Greymantle Mountain grew closer and closer.

I looked out the window and felt strangely calm.

…

Lorna watched Mom, Dad, and Arlo throw themselves into the photo shoot, yet a sense of unease kept creeping over her.

She did not understand it. Her favorite brother was about to break the prophecy, and I had finally stopped making a fuss. Everything was going smoothly.

Yet her mind kept drifting back to the last look she had given me before she left the guest room.

I used to be so full of life. Somewhere along the way, my face had gone completely numb, as if nothing could ever make me happy again.

Lorna's chest tightened.

I was her brother too, yet I had been forced to give way again and again because of that prophecy. I had been shortchanged more times than she could count.

For the first time, Lorna wanted to make it up to me.

When she heard Mom, Dad, and Arlo talking about taking a family portrait while they were at it, she let out a quiet breath and called the housekeeper.

"I'll send you an address. Tell Jude to come down here."

The housekeeper agreed.

After hanging up, Lorna went to the coffee shop across the street. She remembered that I seemed to like the pretzels there.

She was paying for them when someone tapped her on the shoulder. Lorna turned around and found her good friend Sabine Rutherford standing behind her.

Sabine was a police officer, and she was also the woman Lorna had always meant to introduce to me. When Lorna said she would find me a better match, she had not been joking.

Before Lorna could say hello, her phone rang.

The housekeeper sounded terrified. "Jude left the house! I asked around, and people said he was headed for Greymantle Mountain!"

Before Lorna even had time to panic, Sabine frowned. "Greymantle Mountain is bad news. Yesterday, a few men came into the station to turn themselves in. They said they beat up some young guy out there a few nights ago."

Lorna suddenly found it hard to breathe. "A few nights ago? When exactly?"

"Let me think. Oh, right. It was the night before your brother Arlo's engagement party."

Lorna's phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor with a sharp crack.

Morwen paused, and then she smiled. It was the first time I had ever seen her smile. It was like snow melting and spring flowers blooming, and the whole palace seemed a little brighter."By human reckoning, I'm a little over 3,000 years old."My jaw dropped. "Over 3,000? So you've watched empires rise and fall?""I have."I suddenly felt nervous. "Have you ever had another husband?"She looked at me, her eyes warm with amusement. "No. You're the first, and you'll be the only one.""Really?"She reached out and wiped the tear tracks from my face. "Really. I waited 3,000 years before someone finally gave me a little wooden bird."My face went hot."So does that mean we're married now?" I asked quietly. She shook her head. "Not yet. When a mountain spirit marries, there are rites. We have to honor the mountain, make our vows before the heavens, and seal our bond. Are you willing?"I looked into her eyes and nodded solemnly. "I am."She smiled and pulled me into her arms.Ou

The palace sat at the very top of Greymantle Mountain, wrapped in clouds and mist. With its soaring spires and arches, it looked like something out of a fairy tale. The floors were smooth white marble, and glowing crystals set into the walls filled the great hall with a soft light.I looked around in a daze. "Where are we?"Morwen looked at me. "My palace. From now on, it's your home too."Home.The word made my eyes sting. After more than 20 years, I finally had a home that was truly my own.Morwen showed me around the palace. Every room was beautifully furnished and warm. In the innermost bedchamber, the bed was spread with a silk quilt, and the curtains around it were embroidered with a pair of swans."This is where we'll live," she said.I sat on the edge of the bed and ran my hand over the soft quilt. Then something came back to me. "Morwen, you said before that you've known me for a long time?"She paused. Then she sat down beside me and took something from the folds of

Arlo did not deny it.Maisie's expression darkened until it was almost unrecognizable. She had only agreed to get engaged to Arlo because he seemed gentler. Compared to me, always a little distant and timid, he had made her feel safer. In the end, she had been nothing more than a prize Arlo had won, as if she were a piece of property. For someone like that, she had thrown away the man who had truly loved her.Full of regret, Maisie turned to me. "Jude, I'm sorry. I was blind. I didn't see him for who he really was. Come home with me, and we can start over. I swear I'll treat you right this time. I'll never let you get hurt again—""Enough."I said it quietly, cutting her off. My voice was not loud, yet the noise at the shrine's entrance died down at once.I looked at the people in front of me. Mom sat on the ground sobbing, and Dad stood there in a daze. Lorna was full of guilt, and Maisie's eyes were full of regret. They were all sorry. They were all apologizing.Yet as I loo

"Mom and Dad's love, Lorna's love, even your fiancée—everything you had, all of it should've been mine! And you? You deserved to be ruined!"A deathly silence fell over the shrine.Dad went rigid where he stood.Mom turned to Arlo in disbelief, her voice trembling. "Arlo, this isn't true, is it? Tell me it isn't true!"Arlo's face had already gone white as a sheet. He watched Mom fall apart, and then he suddenly began to laugh under his breath. When the laughter finally died down, he admitted it without a shred of hesitation. "I did it. Don't look at me like that. If you hadn't insisted on having Jude and pouring everything you had into him, why would I ever hate him?"Mom burst into tears, and they streamed down her cheeks. "How can you say that? You're both my own flesh and blood. I love you both!"Arlo reacted as if he had just heard the funniest joke in the world. "Don't give me that! Every parent has a favorite!"He yanked up his left hand, revealing an old light brown sc

"Is that what you call doing what's best for me?"Mom's crying stopped abruptly, and panic flashed across her face.Dad lost his patience. He pointed at Morwen and turned to Lorna. "What are you standing around for? Get rid of this woman! Bring Jude home! I refuse to believe all of us can't handle one random woman!"Lorna gritted her teeth and charged forward, ready to drag me out by force.Morwen raised her hand slightly, and an invisible force hurled Lorna backward. She slammed hard onto the stone steps at the shrine's entrance and coughed up blood."Lorna!" Arlo cried out and ran to her.My parents panicked and rushed over to help her up.Dad stared at Morwen in horror. "What are you?"Morwen did not answer. She only looked down at me and reached out to smooth my windblown hair."It's okay now," she said softly. As I looked at her, my eyes suddenly stung. In over 20 years, she was the first person who had ever stood in front of me and told me it was okay.Something seeme

Lorna snapped out of it and hurried toward me. "Come home with me. Whatever this is, we can talk about it at home."She reached for my arm, and I instinctively took a step back.Morwen stepped in front of me.Lorna's hand closed on empty air, and only then did she notice Morwen. She looked her up and down and frowned. "Who are you?"Morwen said nothing. She only stared back coldly, her gaze as indifferent as someone looking down at an insect. The look sent a chill down Lorna's spine, yet she forced herself to keep going. "I asked you a question! Who are you? Why are you with my brother?"I stepped out from behind Morwen."She's my wife," I said calmly."What?"Everyone stared at me in shock.Mom shrieked, "Jude, what are you talking about? What wife? Your brother's prophecy hasn't been broken yet. How could you get married? And who is this woman anyway? Where did you meet her? How long have you known her?"My voice was flat. "I've known her for seven days. Seven days ago, yo
