Chapter 2

Author: Icy Shroom
Madison had never liked me. She had always treated me with cold indifference.

But ever since I moved into this house, she had never outright insulted me before. This was the first time.

The word mute pierced into my chest like a needle, crushing the excitement I had foolishly let myself feel moments earlier.

She stormed upstairs in just a few strides and returned to her room, leaving me standing there alone like an idiot.

"Mr. Simpson, even though you and Miss Clarke are getting engaged, everyone knows about your condition. Wouldn't it be better to just behave yourself and keep the peace?"

Bethany sighed as if she were kindly comforting me. But every word dripped with sarcasm.

She was right. I wasn't worthy of Madison.

But I... really wasn't lying.

Half a year ago happened to be the exact time my parents arranged for me to meet Madison.

Our two families had many business ties, and under pressure from her family, Madison had no choice but to compromise and agree to the engagement.

And from that moment on, I forced myself never to open the game again. I didn't know how to face AutumnWind.

Even if we had only been lovers inside a game, my feelings for her had been real. Through countless days and nights, I had grown so used to talking to her that I couldn't even fall asleep without hearing from her first. More than once, she suggested meeting in person.

But because I couldn't speak, my inferiority complex kept me from agreeing.

I originally thought that, in this lifetime, I would never have another chance with AutumnWind.

Yet, fate had played an enormous joke on me. Madison was AutumnWind. And she had already mistaken someone else for LeoWinter.

Lying in bed, I couldn't stop myself from logging into the game and trying to contact AutumnWind through my account, only to discover that she had long since dissolved our couple relationship. She had blocked me as well.

The bitterness in my chest made it hard to breathe, but all I could do was stay silent.

Still, I couldn't swallow this resentment. I was the real LeoWinter!

Madison simply couldn't recognize me because she'd been deceived.

I spent the entire night searching for the "LeoWinter" Madison believed in.

To my surprise, I actually found him.

He was a rising internet celebrity who had gained popularity over the past two years. His alternate account name just happened to be LeoWinter.

Not only that, but Madison was even following that account on social media.

Unable to resist, I clicked into his profile.

The more I looked, the more certain I became it was him.

At seven-thirty that evening, he had posted a new update.

"Looks like I'm starting the journey all over again. Good thing someone's accompanying me."

The attached image was a black-and-white anime boy avatar.

It was exactly the same one I had seen teamed up with Madison during her game earlier that day.

I immediately opened the private messages and sent him a text.

[Why are you pretending to be LeoWinter?]

He replied almost instantly.

[I have no idea what you're talking about. LeoWinter really was the account I used a few years ago, but it got hacked half a year ago.]

No. That wasn't true at all!

I was about to continue arguing when someone suddenly knocked on my door.

"Charlie, open the door!"

This was the first time Madison had ever entered my room.

And it was only to interrogate me.

"Who gave you the nerve to harass LeoWinter? Since you love causing trouble so much, let's just cancel the engagement!"

My heart sank, disbelief washing over me.

Our engagement had already been publicly announced to the media. And now she was saying she wanted to cancel it?

[I'm really not lying to you. I'm the real LeoWinter. I can show you our old match records, the conversations we had—]

"Enough! How thick-skinned can you possibly be?!"

She slapped my phone out of my hands.

Her face was icy. Cold and untouchable, she looked down at me from above.

"Getting engaged to you was already a last resort. Since you're still not satisfied, then there's nothing left to discuss."

A sharp pain twisted deeper through my chest.

I signed desperately.

[Why won't you believe me?]

But unfortunately... Madison couldn't understand sign language.

A sharp, bitter ache rose in my chest, and even the words I typed turned sharp and unrestrained.[Yes, I'm mute. I can't speak! That's why I was insecure. That's why I didn't dare meet you. Even when I used voice chat, I had to ask a friend to speak for me.][I foolishly thought you might have fallen for me—really me—and not just the fictional LeoWinter in the game.][But, Madison, you already slapped me hard with reality. What more do you want from me now?][You unilaterally ended our engagement, destroyed my reputation, and forced me to stay abroad for half a year to make room for a fake.][I did everything you asked. I've already stayed far away from you. What more do you want?]"It's not like that. I just got the wrong person. I didn't expect Bruce to be so bold as to deceive me. I really didn't think it was possible."She grabbed my arm, trying to explain. On the big screen, her and Bruce's avatars kept flashing, signaling that their match was about to begin.I shook her

There had been thirty minutes of pre-match preparation.Carla busied herself organizing everything we needed, talking nonstop the entire time. Finally, she let out a small cough."Uh... Boss," she said carefully, "what I said earlier was just me talking nonsense. I know you don't like me that way, and I won't force you into any decision."As she spoke, her eyes started to turn red.I couldn't help feeling a little softened. Even if her words earlier had been reckless, she had only said them to defend me.[It's fine. I don't blame you.]"Really?" Her eyes lit up. Then she hesitated and asked cautiously, "Then... if we win the championship, can you promise me one thing?"Seeing my hesitation, she quickly added, a little flustered, "Don't worry, it's not about you being my boyfriend. It's just... today is my birthday. I want you to spend it with me once. That's all. Can you?"The match began before I could answer. I simply led her onto the stage. Then I traced an "OK" into her p

After being blocked again by me, Madison felt an inexplicable irritation she couldn't quite name."AutumnWindy, what are you doing? The match is about to start. Let's do some more training. I'm really nervous."The voice in her headset carried a hint of anxiety. It sounded very similar to the first time she had ever spoken to LeoWinter—but somehow, something felt off.Since when did LeoWinter start calling her "AutumnWindy"?And since when had he become so willing to use voice chat?Back then, she had pestered him for a long time before he finally agreed to speak once. The match began. She seized an opening and locked onto an enemy target, while LeoWinter followed closely behind her in perfect coordination. But this time, the opponents were cunning.Another enemy flanked them from behind and suddenly dropped right in front of her. She calmly shifted her aim, but a sudden scream in her headset startled her.LeoWinter's character suddenly retreated, hiding behind her, leaving h

The fifty million could be withdrawn from the bank at any time. With that money, the gaming studio I had been planning for so long could finally begin. To be fair, Madison really was generous. That very night, I left the country.Other than leaving my mother a single message, I told no one where I was going.Of course, my mother immediately called to scream at me.But the moment I boarded the plane, I removed the SIM card from my phone and threw it away. If, in their eyes, I was nothing more than a worthless mute, then I would live for myself instead.Half a year later, my studio had grown rapidly.Because I never used voice chat while gaming, yet my gameplay was aggressive, fast, and precise, I quickly built a massive fanbase. I had become popular both domestically and overseas. And next week would be the first official competition I'd lead my team into.Carla Dixon skipped over cheerfully, carrying two cups of iced latte. Before I could refuse, she had already shoved the s

During the first year we played together, AutumnWind was always asking to meet me in person.I refused every time. She suggested video calls too, but I never dared agree. In the end, after she kept pestering me about it, I had no choice but to ask a friend for help. While we were gaming, he used a voice changer and spoke a few sentences for me.I stared blankly at Bruce and suddenly realized something. After the voice changer, my friend's voice really did sound a lot like his.No wonder Madison believed without question that he was LeoWinter."You're mute, after all. If AutumnWind ever found out the truth, wouldn't she be disappointed?" Bruce smirked smugly. "Even though I stole your place, I'm the perfect LeoWinter in her eyes."He laughed triumphantly and casually patted my shoulder."Compared to a mute like you, obviously it's better for me to be LeoWinter."Rage surged through me.Even the spot he touched felt disgusting. I violently shook his hand off my shoulder. But

Madison moved quickly. By the very next day, news of our broken engagement had already shot to the top of the trending searches.Photos of the two of us were plastered across the headlines, while the comments section filled with speculation about me.[So this is the heir of the Simpson family that made its fortune through tech? The two families seemed pretty well matched, so why'd they suddenly call off the engagement?][You must not know this, but Miss Clarke has a first love she can't forget. Obviously, her true love came back.][Does anyone else think it's because the Simpson family's eldest son is disabled?]Very few people knew that I was mute. All these years, my parents had never allowed me to attend gatherings within our social circle. But the situation had grown too explosive this time. It didn't take long for netizens to piece things together from scattered clues. In an instant, I became the target of everyone's contempt.[He never accomplished much to begin with. The
