Chapter 3

Author: Moon Puff
I never found out exactly what Fleur told Lenny afterward. Whatever it was, it clearly sent him over the edge.

Starting that night, my phone never stopped buzzing. Texts poured in one after another.

[You did this on purpose to tank my numbers, didn't you? Fine. Get ready to be famous.]

[Eight years in this business, and you're the first piece of garbage like you I've ever met.]

[You think you can just walk away from this? I'll make sure you can't show your face in this city again.]

I didn't reply to a single one. Trading insults with someone who didn't even know my real identity was a waste of breath.

But I'd underestimated just how far he was willing to go.

The next morning, I woke up to a wall of messages from a friend. "You got posted in one of the car-enthusiast group chats. Go look, now."

I opened the screenshots my friend had forwarded, and the blood rushed straight to my head.

Lenny had posted my photo—stolen from my social media—in several local car-enthusiast group chats. Underneath it, in bright red text meant to grab attention: [PSA: exposing a wannabe male escort. Couldn't seal the deal with his sugar mama, but he ordered a car anyway and refused to pay the balance. Fellow dealers, take note—block this guy on sight, don't waste your time.]

Under that, he'd posted my phone number and my messaging handle.

People in the group piled on immediately.

Someone wrote: [People actually pay for a face like that? How much a night?]

Someone else tagged Lenny directly: [Did you see him in person? Does he look like the picture? What would you rate him?]

I scrolled through the messages, my hands shaking so badly I could barely hold the phone.

A man who looked to be in his forties dropped a grimacing emoji and wrote: [I've seen this type before. Couldn't land himself a sugar mama, so he's out here faking it, and now his card's maxed out.]

Someone else laughed along. [Might as well sell himself properly then. Why bother buying a car?]

I took a deep breath, opened my laptop, and forwarded the entire group chat history to the branch general manager's email, with the subject line: [Urgent Report—Defamation of a Customer by Dealership Sales Staff.]

I'd originally planned to wait until my official mystery-shopper report went through corporate channels before dealing with any of this. But I couldn't afford to wait anymore.

Half an hour after I sent the email, I got a reply. The branch's general manager, a man named Franklin Reeves, called me himself, his voice all warmth and reassurance.

"Mr. Lane, I've seen what you reported. I've already taken serious action against the salesman—docked his bonus for the month. Don't worry, we have zero tolerance for that kind of behavior."

"That's it? Just a docked bonus?"

"Docking his bonus is already a serious penalty. Cut him some slack—it's not easy for him either, he's got a family to feed—"

He hung up before I could finish my sentence.

I stared at my phone screen, struck by how absurd the whole situation was. He'd branded me a male escort, exposed my personal information, egged on hundreds of strangers to harass me online—and all the company did about it was dock his bonus.

But the worst of it was still coming.

That afternoon, an anonymous account posted a set of photos to a local forum, under the headline: [Wannabe Escort Fails to Haggle Down a Car, Falsely Reports Innocent Salesman in Revenge.]

The photos showed my face pasted onto a shirtless man's body. The editing was so crude that anyone could tell it was fake at a glance, but nobody in the comments seemed to care.

[The bar for male escorts these days is really on the floor.]

[What did that poor salesman ever do to deserve this? What a piece of work.]

[Are escorts really this brazen now?]

Right on cue, another message came in from Lenny.

[How's it feel to be famous?]

[Forgot to mention—Franklin Reeves is my uncle. You really think reporting me does anything? Save your breath, kid. You're still young, you don't know how the world really works. If you've got nothing going for you, don't go around stirring up trouble.]

That was when my phone started blowing up. The post had been reposted to X, and someone had taken a screenshot captioned "Broke Wannabe Escort Tries to Shake Down Car Dealership." It had already broken a million views.

The comments were unanimous—every single one of them was tearing me apart.

[This escort really thinks he's somebody.]

[That salesman's just trying to make a living. Did he really deserve to get screwed over like this?]

[Wait, I feel like I've seen this guy somewhere before, isn't that the—]

My name, my phone number, my messaging handle—all of it was posted out there for everyone to see.

The first time Fleur tried to win me back, she waited outside my office building, a bouquet of red roses in her arms. The moment she saw me, she rushed over."Baby, I was wrong. I misspoke back then. I didn't mean any of it."I stepped to the side. "First, I'm not your baby. Second, you told a livestream audience of tens of thousands that you weren't going to speak up for me, and instead said I was just prideful and stubborn. That's not misspeaking. That's betrayal."Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.I walked past her.Behind me, I heard the roses hit the bottom of a trash can.The second time, she switched tactics—no more playing the wounded lover, now it was the sympathy card. She called me, her voice thick with tears, saying she'd been fired."It's all because of that salesman. Somebody on that livestream dug up where I worked and posted it in my company group chat, calling me a horrible woman who helped a salesman harass you online. HR called me in the next day and sai

"Extortion? He's charging me with extortion?"Lenny gripped the bars, his eyes bloodshot. "He's the one who cut me loose first!"His lawyer said flatly, "Under criminal law, threatening to expose someone's crimes counts as extortion. That phone recording is not in your favor."Lenny was quiet for a long moment."He wants to take me down? Fine. I'll report Franklin myself. Embezzlement, bribery, falsified invoices, and an off-the-books slush fund. I know exactly what he's been doing. Every single thing he's had me do for him over the years, I've got a record of it."The day after Lenny's complaint went in, the financial crimes division opened a formal case. Franklin was taken from his own home—he didn't even have time to change out of his slippers. The investigation moved with startling speed.Over the previous five years, Franklin had embezzled more than $280,000 from the company through inflated repair-parts invoices, fabricated marketing expenses, and skimmed manufacturer reba

I only learned later that the salesman's full name was Lenny Sloan. On his first night in the county jail, he was already bragging to his cellmates. "My uncle's coming to get me out tomorrow. You watch."What Lenny didn't know was that corporate's legal department had already turned his entire record inside out. From the moment my report went in, they'd launched an emergency investigation—and what they found was staggering.Legal pulled every complaint filed against that dealership over the past three years.Lenny, thirty-four, had worked there for eight years. Over that time, there were seventeen documented discrimination complaints against him specifically. Twelve of those had been marked "resolved", but the so-called resolution amounted to nothing more than a customer service callback before the file got closed. The other five didn't even have a callback on record; they'd simply been filed away. And in the sign-off line for who'd archived them: Franklin Reeves, the branch gener

The people livestreaming exchanged uneasy glances. Then Lenny started laughing. "What are you even trying to pull here?"He pointed at my badge and turned back to face the bloggers' cameras. "You all see this? This guy's so desperate to avoid apologizing, he faked a badge. 'Mystery shopper'? I've been in this business eight years and never heard of such a thing. And that's a sloppy photoshop job if I've ever seen one."The car bloggers, who'd looked rattled just a second earlier, immediately puffed back up.Tyler Cross—the one with the dyed blond hair—stepped forward, holding up his phone. "Look, man, be real, there's no need for this. You ordered a car and refused to pay for it. That's rough on the salesman too. We came here today just to get you to make things right with him. Apologize, and this whole thing's over."Another one chimed in. "Yeah, own up to it. You're a grown man—just say you're sorry. Our viewers aren't unreasonable people."I leaned against the doorframe, wat

Once the story hit the trending page, plenty of strangers piled on to tear me apart. But it wasn't only people looking to insult me who came looking. The first message I got was from a guy who went by "Cola"—his real name, I'd later learn, was Jason Cole. He told me he'd gone to look at cars at the same dealership the year before, and Lenny had taken one look at his flip-flops and told him he was too poorly dressed to be allowed inside. He'd been so angry he slammed the door on his way out, bought a car from a different brand instead, and still felt a flash of irritation every time he thought back on it.The second was a woman Lenny had added on messaging. He'd sent her flirty texts every day, saying things like, "A pretty girl like you doesn't need anything fancy—get something cheap, I'll pick it out for you." When she turned him down, he'd taken to her social media with snide, backhanded posts calling her "picky" and "impossible to please."A third woman had it even worse. She'd g
