After a few days of doing nothing but sleeping and binge-eating, Elena sat slouched in the sitting room. Her laptop was open in front of her, but she didn’t touch it. She stared blankly at the screen.
“Anything yet?” Sienna asked as she walked in with a bowl of popcorn.
Elena gave a slow shake of her head. “No employment needed anywhere,” she muttered, standing up only to flop beside Sienna on the sofa with a groan.
“That’s crazy,” Sienna said, offering her the bowl. “Let’s just wait a few more days and see what comes up.”
“Yeah. I’m not in a rush. I’ll take my time,” Elena said, popping a kernel in her mouth.
Sienna nodded, still scrolling through her phone. “Wait... Elena,” she began, pausing. “I know last time you mentioned maybe taking a waitress job…”
Elena didn’t even glance her way.
“I know, I know….having a Master’s and ending up waiting tables? That’s a tough pill to swallow. But hear me out. What if you try this nanny job instead?”
“Nanny?” Elena echoed, clearly uninterested.
“Yeah,” Sienna replied, her tone brighter. “It’s only for a month. You can do it while still job hunting. Keeps you active and sane.”
Elena stared into the distance. “I’ll think about it,” she replied flatly.
“Please do,” Sienna said, grabbing a handful of popcorn. “’Cause the pay is good.”
Elena’s head turned so fast it was like her battery just got recharged. “How good are we talking?”
Sienna smirked. “Eight figures.”
“Whaaaaaaatttttt?!” Elena practically screamed, her eyes flying open.

“No, I’ll make sure to put her in her place,” the lady said with a confident flip of her hair.
Chris looked at her for a beat, unimpressed. He scribbled something on his notepad, then muttered, “Next.”
The woman blinked. “Excuse me?”
“Thank you for coming,” Chris replied flatly, already turning to the next applicant.
The next woman sat down, a bit too relaxed. “Well, what I’ll do is super simple,” she said, crossing her legs. “If the child misbehaves, timeout. Or maybe a little clean-up punishment. Kids learn fast.”
Chris raised an eyebrow. “Not his kid,” he muttered under his breath, shaking his head. “Next.”
He waved her off without another word, scribbling a big X beside her name....
The notepad in front of him was nearly full of crossed-out names.
A young woman with bright red lipstick and overly high heels sat across from him.
“Do you have experience with children?”
“Well, I watched my little cousins once at a party until one of them disappeared. But I found him eventually!”
Chris blinked. “Next.”
A man in a suit three sizes too small leaned forward with a grin.
“I sing to calm kids down. Want me to... ”
“Neeeeexxxxxxt.”
….….
A woman in a sparkly blouse held up flashcards.
“These are my custom-designed discipline cards. I invented a reward system based on zodiac signs.”
Chris didn’t even lift his head. “Next.”
….…..
A girl chewed gum loudly while texting.
“Kids love me. I let them do whatever they want.”
Chris slowly raised his eyes, chewing back a sigh. “Neeeeeeexxxxxxt.”
Finally, he looked at the clock and groaned under his breath. “At this rate, I might as well move in and raise the kid myself.”
Chris’s phone rang and he picked it up instantly. “Mr. Damien Hughston.”
His posture straightened. “Yes, sir,” he muttered respectfully, already rising to his feet.
“I’ll be at the airport soon,” he added, snapping the notepad shut.
Without another word, Chris strode out of the room....
.....
A sharp knock hit the door. Elena, still in her hoodie and pyjama shorts, sighed and dragged herself off the couch.
She opened the door and froze.
There he was.
“Ray?” she breathed.
He gave a sheepish half-smile. “Hey... you look... good.”
She didn’t say a word. Just stood there.
Ray glanced down awkwardly, then back at her with his signature fake-sincere eyes. “Look, I know I’m probably the last person you want to see”
“You think?” Elena cut him off as she crossed out her arms.
“I messed up, okay?” he said quickly. “I panicked. I wasn’t ready back then. But I never stopped thinking about you.”
She let out a dry laugh. “Three years of silence and now you’re suddenly haunted by my memory?”
“I saw your picture online,” he added, as if that explained everything. “And I realised... God, I was such an idiot. You’re the one that got away.”
“No,” Elena said coldly. “I was the one you let walk away.”
He stepped closer. “Elena, I made mistakes, I admit that. We should’ve gone ahead with the wedding and all I know is I messed up and... ”
Before Ray could finish, a sharp voice cut in.
“Do you know what else is going to be messed up if you don’t get the hell out of here?” Sienna’s voice rang loud and clear from behind him.
He barely had time to turn his head before..
SPLASH.
A full bucket of iced water drenched his back and shoulders.
Sienna stood there, holding the now-empty bucket like a weapon. “Your clothes,” she muttered coldly, stepping forward to block Elena completely. “Do you even realise what you did? You wasted six years of her life just to show up three years later like some pathetic rerun?”
Ray opened his mouth.
“Bro, save it. Get lost before I call the cops,” Sienna snapped her eyes blazing.
Before he could argue, the door slammed shut in his face..
Elena let out a slow breath. “Thanks.”
Sienna exhaled too. “I swear, if he ever shows up again, I’m bringing pepper spray.”
Ohhhh, I’m coming with you guys,” Vivienne muttered hastily as she strode across the marble floor in her heels. Both Mr. Hughston and Nathaniel paused mid-step, turning in surprise.Vivienne appeared a moment later, dressed in an elegant all-black dress that accentuated her curves, paired with a matching hat... the kind worn by women who knew how to command a room, even in mourning. She let out a nervous chuckle as she adjusted the sides of her fitted dress with slightly trembling hands.“I just felt… I needed to go say hi at the grave, too,” Vivienne added softly, her eyes lingering on both men. Then, with a faint smile and a tilt of her head, she added with intentional sweetness,“Since I’ll soon be Mrs. Hughston, it only feels right.”A heavy silence followed her words. But just then, the doorbell's DING DONG sliced through the room...“Oh!” she gasped, clutching her chest with theatrical flair. “That must be the flowers for the grave!”Without waiting for a response, she spun arou
Evening had already settled in.Dinner was being served as Elena busied herself setting the table when Mr. Hughston walked in. He’d been out all day for work, and his presence immediately filled the room.Their eyes met.Without a word, he crossed over to her and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. His gaze held a lingering apology for what had happened this morning.“It wasn’t what you think,” he said quietly.“Oh, no qualms,” Elena replied, keeping her focus on arranging the cutlery as she tried to appear unaffected. But he wasn’t convinced. He reached for her waist and pulled her gently but firmly toward him.“Are you sure?” he murmured, his lips brushing just beneath her ear as he placed a gentle kiss there.Elena's breath caught as he tightened his hold from behind. She leaned back into him, her resolve weakening until footsteps echoed nearby.Startled, Elena pulled away so quickly that it was as if nothing had happened.Mr. Hughston, you're home,” Vivienne purred, her voice thi
The morning light poured into the grand hallway as Vivienne stood by the staircase, peeking subtly toward the dining area. Her footsteps tapped out a steady beat as she paced, a little too dramatically...She paused, made sure no one was looking directly then let out a sudden cry."Ahh!" she gasped, stumbling and landing on the floor with a thud. The noise echoed just enough.Within seconds, Damien appeared from the hallway, his brows furrowed in alarm."Vivienne?" he called, rushing toward her.She clutched her ankle and winced."Please... I think I twisted it. I’m in so much pain," she said, her voice trembling softly...Without thinking twice, Damien crouched down beside her."Can you stand?" he asked.Vivienne shook her head quickly, her eyes watering just a little in a perfectly timed."Alright, hold on," he said as he slid his arms under her and lifted her off the ground with ease.Just as he turned toward the hallway with her in his arms... Elena stepped out of the kitchen. She
The morning felt a little more relaxed as Elena moved around the kitchen, putting breakfast together. She barely noticed him until his arms slid around her waist from behind, pulling her gently into his warmth.“What are you making, Chef Elena?” he asked, already pressing soft kisses along her neck.“Well, something light… for Mr. Hughston,” she teased, turning to face him.“Do I eat before I eat… or eat before I eat?” he said as he looked down at her.Elena burst out laughing, swatting his chest. “That was so corny!”“I don’t know about that,” he grinned, and before she could respond, he lifted her onto the counter.“Maybe this will give you a clearer idea,” he whispered, leaning in and kissing her, slow and deep.....There was a soft mechanical hiss and before Damien could turn his head, the door slid open.Elena quickly dropped down from the counter, adjusting her robe and brushing her hair back so as not to cause any alarm.Damien glanced at her briefly, then straightened up and
Damien had been driving around the town aimlessly, exhaustion crawling over his skin like a second layer. He’d been searching for hours, nearly ready to give up, when something or rather, someone caught his eye. A lone figure walking slowly through the park path, head lowered, hands stuffed in her coat pockets. His heart slammed hard in his chest. “Elena,” he whispered, barely believing it. He pulled the car to a sharp stop and jumped out, running toward her without thinking. She lifted her head, startled by the sound of fast footsteps. Her eyes widened. Before she could utter a single word, Damien reached her and without hesitation, yanked her into his arms. His hold was desperate, full of emotion, like someone clinging to a lifeline. Elena’s breath caught. Her arms stayed at her sides, confused, unsure until his grip tightened even more. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, still holding her. “I’m so sorry.” His arms wrapped around her even tighter, like he was afraid she’d
“Miss Elena!” Nathaniel called out with a laugh, stepping out from his hiding spot. He looked around, expecting to see her nearby. But there was no sign of her.“Dad!!” he shouted instead, spotting Mr. Hughston standing stiffly near the large window.Mr. Hughston’s stormy expression softened the moment he heard his son's voice. He turned around.“Hello, kiddo,” he said, trying to sound normal.Nathaniel frowned a little. “Where’s Miss Elena?”Mr. Hughston didn’t respond as he stared ahead instead.“Dad?” Nathaniel called again, louder this time.“She’s fired,” Mr. Hughston said flatly.“Huh?” Nathaniel blinked in confusion.“There will be a new nanny starting tomorrow,” he added, already moving toward the stairs.“But Dad… I like her,” Nathaniel said, his voice quiet, almost hurt. Before Mr. Hughson could reply, his phone buzzed.“Hello?” he answered curtly.“Mr. Hughston”, came Mr. Thomas’s voice from the other end, calm but urgent. “We found something... You’ll want to see this.”Mr
