Mag-log inArden let the boy go and the boy ran across the road and into his father's arms and the whole of the ridge road was quiet.
Dale held him.
"You are going home," he said. "You are going home and you are going to go to school and you are going to grow up and you are not going to be the son of a murderer."
The boy was crying.
"Papa," he said.
"Go to the Alpha," Dale said. "Go to the Alpha and stand behind her and do not look back."
The boy went.
He came across the road and stood behind me and June put her hand on his shoulder.
And then Arden said, "The trade is made. The boy for the Beta."
"He is not the Beta," I said.
"He is the wolf who killed Owen Halloran," Arden said. "And the whole of the territory knows it and the whole of the Council knows it. And the Council has been waiting for him since the tribunal." He put his hand on his chest. "So I am going to take him to Boise and I am going to give him to the Council and the whole of it is going to be answered for."
I stood in the road.
And then Elias came out of the truck.
He was in his coat with his side still wrapped and his face gray and he walked out into the road and stood beside Dale.
"Arden," he said. "You are not taking the Beta to Boise."
Arden looked at him.
"Keeper," he said.
"I am the keeper and I am the mate of the Alpha and I have been the cursed wolf of this territory for seventeen years." Elias put his hand on his chest. "And there is a thing about the keeper that you have not thought of. The keeper is the wolf who holds the circle. And if you take the keeper out of the territory, the circle is not held and the whole of the line is not held and the whole of the territory is not held."
Arden stood in the road.
"The Council does not care about the circle," he said.
"The Council does not care about the circle," Elias said. "But the ground does. And the ground is the whole of the territory and the ground is going to answer."
Arden looked at him for a long moment.
And then he laughed.
"Keeper," he said. "You are a clever wolf and you have been a clever wolf since the day you came out of the trees. But the ground is not going to answer for a wolf who has been standing in a circle in a wheat field." He turned to his four hundred wolves. "Take the Beta."
And then the whole of the ridge road went dark.
It was not a cloud and it was not a shadow. It was the light going out of the whole of the territory and the whole of the ridge and the whole of the east field.
And then the ground answered.
It came up out of the snow and it went through the whole of the ridge road and the whole of the four hundred wolves went down on their knees.
I stood in the road and the whole of it was dark and the whole of it was silent and the whole of it was the ground.
And then the light came back.
Arden was on his knees in the road with his hands on the ground and his face white.
"What is this?" he said.
"It is the ground," Elias said. "And the ground is the whole of the territory and the whole of the territory is the pack and the pack is the line and the line is the circle. And the ground is not going to let a wolf take the keeper out of it."
Arden looked up at him.
"You did this," he said.
"I did not do anything," Elias said. "I stood in the circle at the full moon and I took the vow and the ground is holding me to it."
Arden got to his feet.
"The Council is going to hear of this," he said.
"The Council has already heard of it," I said. "The Council is in Boise and the Council has ruled and the whole of it is in the register and the whole of it is going to be answered for." I put my hand on my chest. "So take your four hundred wolves and go back to the Snoqualmie territory and do not come back to this territory until the whole of the Council has ruled on the whole of it."
Arden stood in the road.
And then he turned and walked back up the ridge road with his four hundred wolves behind him and the whole of them went up the ridge and over it and did not come back.
The road was quiet.
And then a wolf came down the ridge road after them.
It was a herald and he had a white flag and a paper and he was out of breath.
"Alpha," he said. "The Council has ruled. The Council has ruled on the whole of it." He held out the paper. "The Council has ruled that the room is closed and the silver is the line's and the whole of the children are free. And the Council has ruled that the whole of the Council is to be rebuilt and that the seat of the speaker is to be given to the wolf who broke the curse."
I took the paper.
"That is me," I said.
"That is you," the herald said.
I stood in the road.
And then he said, "And Alpha. There is a thing at the bottom of the paper. It is the ruling on the Beta. The Council has ruled that the Beta is to be tried for the murder of Owen Halloran in front of the whole of the Council at the next full moon."
I looked at the paper.
"Then the whole of it is going to be answered for," I said.
And then June came up the road with her face white.
"Wren," she said. "The Council has sent a second paper. It is the ruling on the keeper. The Council has ruled that the keeper is to be tried for breaking pack law." She held up the paper. "It says the keeper took a wolf's life in the circle and the whole of it is a blood crime and the keeper is to be executed."
I stood in the road.
"Executed," I said.
"Executed," June said.
And then Elias said, "Wren."
I turned around.
"I am the keeper," he said. "And the keeper is the wolf who holds the circle and the ground is holding me to it. And there is a thing about the ground that the Council does not know." He put his hand on my face. "The ground is not going to let the Council execute the keeper. The ground is going to answer."
I stood in the road.
"Then the whole of it is going to be decided in one night," I said.
The whole of the mill yard was quiet and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the ground. It was the first of May and the wheat was up and the whole of the east field was green and the whole of the west line was green and the whole of the north field was green. And the whole of the mill was the whole of the keeper's house with the door that closed and the window that opened and the chair by the window and the rug on the floor and the crib in the corner. And in the crib there was a child. She was three months old and she had red hair and amber eyes and she was awake and she was making a sound that was not a word and the whole of her was the whole of the line.I picked her up.“Ilse,” I said. “The whole of the it is the whole of the it.”She made the sound again. And then Elias came in from the yard with his shirt sleeves rolled up and his hair in his eyes and his hands dirty from the fence line.“Wren,” he said. “The whole of the it is
The whole of the circle was quiet and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the mark. And then the whole of the it was the whole of the record. The whole of the line went up to the pack house in the morning and the whole of the them came into the Alpha's office and the whole of the them sat down at the long table and the whole of the them had the register and the crates and the whole of the it.The whole of the record was on the table. It was the new record. It was the record of the whole of the packs and it had been bound in leather by Arthur Renn and it had a brass clasp and the whole of it was blank. And it was waiting for the whole of the it.“Alpha,” Arthur Renn said. “The whole of the it is the whole of the record. And the whole of the record is the whole of the line.” He put his hand on the book. “And the whole of the it is going to be written by the whole of the it.”I sat down at the head of the table.“Then write the whole of
The whole of the circle was quiet and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the ground. And then the whole of the it was the whole of the mark.It was not a day and it was not a night and it was not a trial. It was a thing that happened in the circle in the spring with the whole of the line around it and the whole of the ground under it.The whole of the it came at dusk on the first full moon after the trial. The whole of the line came into the circle and the whole of the pack and the whole of the territories and the whole of the east and the whole of the them stood around the flat stone and the whole of the them put their hands on the stone. And then Ada of the north came into the circle. She was old and she had a cane and a shawl and she was the keeper and she had been the keeper for eighty-five years.“Alpha,” she said. “The whole of the it is the whole of the mark.”“The whole of the it is the whole of the mark,” I said. She put the
The whole of the packs was signed and the whole of the line was one and the whole of it was the whole of the ground. And then the whole of the it was the whole of the trial. It was held in the circle in the trees in the spring when the snow was gone and the wheat was up and the whole of the east field was green. The whole of the Council came and the whole of the territories came and the whole of the east came and the whole of the north came and the whole of the line came and the whole of the it was in the east field. And in the middle of the circle there was a table and seven chairs and the whole of the Alphas of the whole of the packs sat in the chairs.I sat in the middle chair with Ilse in my arms and Elias beside me.And in front of the table there was a wolf.It was Silas and he was in a gray coat and his hands were tied and his face was gray and the whole of him was the whole of the it.“Silas,” I said.“Alpha,” he said.“The whole of the it is the whole of the trial,” I said. “
The whole of the circle roared and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the ground. And then the whole of the it was the whole of the whole of the it.The Alpha of the Alphas stood on the flat stone with his staff in his hand and the whole of him was the whole of the it."Alpha," he said. "The whole of the it is the whole of the line and the whole of the line is the whole of the ground and the whole of the ground is the whole of the territories." He put his staff on the stone. "And the whole of the territories is not the whole of the Council and the whole of the Council is not the whole of the territories. The whole of the territories is the whole of the line."I stood in the circle."The whole of the it is the whole of the line," I said."The whole of the it is the whole of the line," the Alpha of the Alphas said. "And the whole of the line is the whole of the packs." He put his hand on his chest. "And the whole of the packs is going
The whole of the circle was quiet and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the ground. And then the wind came up.It came out of the trees and it came across the circle and the whole of the it was not the wind of January and the whole of the it was not the wind of the snow.It was warm and it smelled of pine and cedar and the inside of a cedar chest and the whole of it was the whole of the it.I stood on the flat stone with Ilse in my arms. And then I heard it.It was a voice and it was quiet and it came out of the wind and the whole of it was the whole of the it.It said: Wren.I stood in the circle.“Mama,” I said. The whole of the circle was silent. And then the voice came again. It said: I am sorry.I sat down on the flat stone.“Mama,” I said. The voice came out of the wind and the whole of it was warm.It said: I did the whole of the it the wrong way. I kept the whole of the it in a box and I paid the rent and I kept you out of t
