The Not so Cursed Life of Brianna Lindolh
Author: Alisa Holmes

Prologue

The little girl could only let out a whimper as the figure outside kept banging her bedroom door, each strike was harder than the last... it was a miracle for the door to stand strong this long, "YOU BETTER OPEN THIS DOOR BRAT OR SO HELP ME I'LL BEAT YOU TILL YOU'RE BLACK AND BLUE." The dark figure bellowed.

She's gonna hurt me.

The trembling girl knew that it was no empty threat. Tears rolled down her porcelain cheeks, her lips dry and chapped... thoughts, dangerous thoughts running through her head. Her heart pounding in her ears as she tried to calm down but it was no use.

Her deep breaths turned into harsh ones, her eyes tearing up more as she curled into a corner.

It'll be over soon... it'll be over soon... it'll be over soon...

She tried to calmed herself down as she whispers these words over and over again, rocking her body back and forth...

She'll go away, she has to go away! Please go away... please... please...

Fear gripped her heart as repeat the words in her head.

At a young age, she realized that no one will ever her... not even God.

The banging stopped.

Everything was quiet as if time stopped.

A loud bang echoed through the halls as the door crashed on the wooden floors.

"What a bad girl! You made me break the door! You know what bad girls get?"

Her mother walks into the room, a broken bottle in hand.

"No! Please no!" The trembling girl forced her weak knees to stand as she scrambled away fearing for her life but suddenly the wind was knocked out of her... her back hitting the wall. Her mother raised the bottle in the air, an evil smile plastered on her face.

"Bad girls get punished."

With a loud scream, I bolted awake, I looked around the empty room to make my shaking form calm down a bit. I sighed and brought my hands in front of me before burying my face in them.

"It was just a nightmare, she's not here, and you're safe."

I mumbled reassuring myself as I sat back up. It's always the same nightmare, never changing. Like a broken cassette tape repeating that day over and over only to stop at that exact part before shutting down.

The sound of the clock ticking filled the cold room. Each tick reminding me of a timer counting down, it made me feel uneasy. She usually comes at this exact time, 11 pm, and if she did... I shivered at the thought; she can't find me right?

I brushed the thought aside, there's no use in thinking too much, no use in dreading about the past.

I fiddled with the hem of my shirt distracted with my thoughts from its recent turmoil.

"It's okay, no one is going to hurt you." I reassured the black void in my heart, "She will never find you... you're not Brianna anymore. When you left that house, you left everything behind including your name. From then on your Midnight, the past doesn't matter you're Midnight now."

"I am Midnight."
