 Reylap's POV

I ran. My lungs burned with every uneven stride, the forest a blur of dark shapes and shadows. Each branch that lashed at my face, each root that threatened to trip me, fueled my escape. I clutched the tattered remnants of my tunic, the only thing I had managed to salvage. “Please,” I whispered, a desperate plea to no one, “just let me go.”

The air thickened, a familiar hum resonating deep in my bones. It was time. No more hiding. No more fear. Not like that. I slowed, my breath coming in ragged gasps, and found a small clearing. The moon, a crescent sliver peeking through the canopy, cast an ethereal glow. I closed my eyes, urging the change. My muscles knotted, stretching and reforming. Skin tightened, fur erupted, bones shifted with a sickening crunch that always felt both excruciating and exhilarating.

A low growl rumbled in my chest as I opened my eyes. Rina. My wolf. Strong, sleek, powerful. She shook her massive head, scenting the wind. “We’re free,” I thought, the connection a whisper between us. *We are, Reylap. Finally.* Her voice was a comforting balm in the chaos of my mind.

I broke into a run, Rina’s powerful legs devouring the distance. The trees blurred into a seamless wall of green and black. My heart, now Rina’s, pulsed with a rhythm of pure, unadulterated freedom. We ran until the burning in my legs was no longer about fear, but about endurance. We ran until the Emerald Diamond Pack’s territory felt like a distant nightmare.

Then Rina faltered. A whine escaped her. *Where are we, Reylap? I don’t know this scent. This land is unfamiliar.*

My heart plummeted. “What do you mean, Rina? We just… ran.”

*I know, but I can’t place it. No familiar markers. We just kept going.* A cold dread seeped into my newfound euphoria. We had simply run headlong into the unknown.

“We have to be somewhere,” I muttered aloud, realizing the absurdity of speaking to myself as a wolf. I needed to think. Needed to understand. The moonlight was still dim. I needed to see. The shift was agonizing this time, a slow tearing of fur, a grotesque contraction of muscle. Each bone seemed to rebel against returning to its human form. I fell to my knees, gasping, sweat plastering strands of hair to my forehead.

I blinked, my vision slowly adjusting. The immediate realization hit me like a physical blow. My tunic. It was gone. Torn to shreds during the transformation. I was naked. Completely, utterly exposed in the middle of a strange, dark forest. Shame washed over me, cold and sharp. I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to cover what little I could.

Then, it hit me. A scent unlike any I had ever encountered. Sweet. So incredibly sweet it was almost tangible, like rich honey mixed with something wild, a faint trace of pine and damp earth. It pulled at me, a siren’s call to my very core. My wolf, even suppressed, stirred within me, a low hum of curiosity and something else… recognition?

Slowly, cautiously, I pushed myself to my feet. The scent was stronger to my left, drawing me deeper into the trees. My stomach rumbled. I hadn't eaten in what felt like days. Driven by hunger and that insistent, intoxicating aroma, I stumbled forward, my bare feet silent on the forest floor.

The sweet scent became almost suffocating. It was everywhere. My senses were overwhelmed. I knew I shouldn’t be here. I knew this was dangerous. But something primal overruled my fear.

A twig snapped behind me. I froze. The sweet scent vanished, replaced by the acrid stench of unwashed bodies and stale alcohol. My blood ran cold. I knew that smell. Rogue wolves.

“Well, well, what do we have here?” A guttural voice cut through the silence. My heart hammered against my ribs.

I whirled around, clutching my arms across my chest even tighter. Three figures emerged from the shadows, their eyes glinting with malicious intent. They weren’t fully shifted, their faces still human, but their claws were extended, their teeth sharper than they should be. Their scent was nauseating.

“Look, brothers, a little pup lost her way,” another sneered, his gaze sweeping over my naked body. “And her clothes, too.”

My breath caught in my throat. “Stay back,” I managed, my voice a thin reedy whisper.

They laughed, a cruel, mocking sound that echoed through the silent forest. “Oh, she talks,” the first one purred, taking a step closer. “A feisty one.”

I took a step back, then another, my bare feet slipping on the damp leaves. “Don’t touch me.” My voice held no power, no conviction. Just raw fear.

“And what’s a little girl like you doing out here all alone?” the third one asked, closing the circle around me. His eyes were predatory, hungry.

I could feel tears stinging my eyes. I was so tired. So defeated. I had just escaped one hell, only to walk headfirst into another. Rina was silent, subdued by fear, unable to come to my aid. My human form was weak, exposed.

“I… I’m just passing through,” I stammered, my voice trembling. “I mean no harm.”

“Harm? No, princess, I think you’re in for a bit of fun,” the first rogue said, a lecherous grin spreading across his face. He lunged.

I screamed, a strangled sound torn from my throat. I stumbled backward, pure panic coursing through me. My foot caught on something unseen, and I felt myself falling, falling backwards towards a dark, murky puddle.

Just as the cold water was about to engulf me, a hand, strong and warm, wrapped around my arm like a vice. It wasn't the rough, calloused grip of a rogue. It was firm, yet gentle, pulling me upright with surprising force. The lingering sweet scent, faint but unmistakable, suddenly flared, closer than it had ever been.

No. No.This isn't happening.Except it was. It was happening and I was standing in the middle of it completely alone, with no one standing up for me and everyone lying against me, out to destroy what's left of my sanity.“The council has heard sufficient testimony,” the elder said.“No,” I cut in quickly. “You haven’t heard mine.”Nobody responded, and that was when I stopped fighting. I finally understood that this room had never been about the truth. It had been about the story, and someone else had written it long before I walked through that door.I pressed my hand against my stomach. They weren’t listening because they never intended to.The elder continued. "Reylap Stark, the council finds sufficient grounds for —""I'm pregnant."The room froze.Even Farida stopped breathing for half a second. But, she recovered immediately, not looking surprised as she grabbed a glass of water.I kept my eyes on Malik. Only Malik. "Three months pregnant. I found out three weeks ago, but.. Mal

“No." Farida’s smile thinned slightly. “I said, kneel.”I looked at her slowly, exhaustion twisting inside me so violently I almost started laughing again. “You stole my ceremony, my mate, my title, and now you want my dignity too?” I tilted my head. “Greedy.”A sharp murmur spread through the room.Farida’s eyes hardened. “Mind your tongue.”“Oh, now we care about manners?” I asked softly. “I've set bones without anesthesia," I said pleasantly. "Delivered breech pups at midnight. Sat with dying men so they wouldn't cross alone." I tilted my head exactly the way she had. "I don't kneel for people who've never bled for anything in their lives.""Bold words," Farida said softly, "for someone standing in a puddle.""Bold seat," I shot back, "for someone who didn't earn it."An elder cleared his throat sharply. "Luna Farida, we apologize for —"I laughed out loud at that. "You're apologizing to her?" I looked around the room in disbelief. "I'm the one standing here soaking wet being accu

Reylap’s POVI heard the music before I even reached the gates, and I knew it was a celebration. I could hear drums and voices and that particular kind of joy that carries across pack grounds when there's good news, and for one foolish, breathless second my heart lifted, because I thought it was for me. I thought Malik had started without me, that he'd been so impatient to begin our night that he hadn't waited, and I was already smiling as I quickened my pace and called out to the guards."Open the gate. I'm late enough as it is, and if Malik starts complaining, I’m blaming both of you.” I grinned.Neither of them moved. The smile on my face faltered slightly.I slowed. “...Cute. Now open the gate.”Nothing.I stopped walking. "Did you hear me?""We heard you," the first one said. "You're not cleared to enter."The smile died. "I'm sorry — what?""No entry." He didn't even have the decency to look uncomfortable about it. "Those are our orders."I looked at him for a long moment, then

Reylap's POV“State your business!”The guard’s voice rang out through the drizzle just as I stepped up to the gates of Dark Moors Pack, and for a second, I genuinely thought he was joking.I stood there dripping from a miserable six-hour ride, mud clinging to the hem of my coat while my medical bag dug into my shoulder, and stared at him in disbelief. Then I lifted the folded summons from my coat pocket and waved it once. “I came to decorate your gate. What does it look like?”His expression flattened. The second guard snorted under his breath, quickly covering it with a cough.“I’m Reylap Stark,” I said, slipping the paper back into my pocket. “Your Alpha requested a healer. Unless someone suddenly learned surgery overnight, I suggest you let me through.”The first guard’s jaw tightened slightly at my tone.“We were told a healer was coming,” he said carefully. “No one mentioned your name.”“You summoned me.”Neither guard moved.A chill settled in my stomach. Healers were supposed
