The smell of the rain that fell earlier in the evening still lingered and the coldness of the weather wrapped me like a blanket.

The ground under my boots was soft, soaked through, every step whispering against the earth as Jasmine padded beside me, her breathing calm and steady. We were leaving Camellia’s house behind us; her words, her steady presence, and the weight of the essence now in her care still remained in my chest like an echo I couldn’t shake.

It should have felt like relief. I should have been able to breathe easier now that the tiny, corked bottle holding Thompson’s essence was no longer in my hands, no longer brushing against my palm like a hidden heartbeat. But instead, an odd emptiness filled me, like giving it away meant I had surrendered something of myself too.

“Clarissa,” my wolf growled in my mind. It's been a while since I had been in touch with her. She had been broken just as I was since Thompson had stolen the seat of the alpha. “Are you tired?” She asked.
