Chapter 3

Author: Genius Kitty
The next day, a colleague handed me two movie tickets. I was told that a new movie was released recently and that it was worth watching.

“You and Camelia should go. It’s a sweet romance, perfect for you two!”

The colleague winked at me, then turned back to their work.

I thanked them and hesitated for a moment before deciding to call Camelia. The phone rang for a long time before the call was connected.

“Waylon, what’s the matter?” Camelia’s gentle voice came through.

I glanced at the movie tickets in my hand. The couple in the movie poster was all wrapped up in each other. “There’s a new movie out. Do you want to watch it together sometime?”

“Things are busy at the office right now. I can’t get away,” Camelia refused. Her voice was calm but distant.

I was about to respond when a man’s voice cut through the line.

“Camelia, I…”

Before I could hear more, the call abruptly ended.

I was a little confused. Why was Grayson with Camelia?

The next moment, my breath caught, and a sudden surge of pain made me stop breathing. It was intense…

My cancer symptoms were growing stronger.

After a long while, I finally regained control. Cold sweat ran down my cheeks from my forehead. I redialled her number as my body shook. “Camelia, will you be back early tonight?”

I tried to keep my voice steady, not letting strain show.

There was a faint rustle on the other end, and after a pause, Camelia’s indifferent voice replied, “We’ll talk tonight. I have to get back to work first.”

The busy tone that followed drained the color from my face even more.

The late summer air was heavy and stifling. Dragging my weary body through it left me drenched in sweat.

By the time I returned home, it was already 8:00 pm.

I went to the hospital that afternoon for more tests. The doctor had told me I needed treatment immediately, or I might not have much time left.

I let out a bitter laugh. Whether I lived a day more or a day less, what difference did it make?

I pushed open the apartment door. As expected, no one was home.

This apartment belonged to Camelia. She asked me to move in since we were about to get engaged. Usually, she would have dinner ready by this hour. However, ever since Grayson returned, I had not seen her home before 10:00 pm.

I glanced at my phone and realized it was my mother’s death anniversary tomorrow.

Camelia finally came back around 10:30 pm.

She walked in, exhausted, and hugged me. The scent of wood lingered on her. That was not her perfume. It was another man’s cologne.

I froze for a moment, and the words slipped out before I could stop them.

“Who were you with today?” I was referring to the phone call earlier in the day.

The look on Camelia’s face stiffened when she heard that. Then, she answered in a soft voice, “A colleague. Who else would it be?”

Her tone was casual, almost careless, and she touched her nose. She was lying.

My heart let out a quiet scream. Whenever Camelia felt guilty, she had this habit of touching her nose.

After a moment of silence, my eyes stung. “It was Grayson, wasn’t it? He was at your office? Why? Do you think it’s appropriate to be working in the same office as your ex?”

I realized how hollow my own voice sounded, but Camelia seemed completely unaware.

She simply rubbed her forehead with a weary look and spoke to me in a coaxing, almost childlike tone, “Stop sulking. He applied to my company the day he returned. I made him a department head since he’s capable enough.”

I froze in place.

I was at a loss for words for a moment.

Should I ask why she did not tell me, or why she lied about him being a colleague?

Then, I realized, the word 'colleague' was not wrong. He was a department head at her company now.

Hence, I stayed silent.

The plan I had to tell Camelia about my cancer was quietly shelved somewhere deep inside me. I did not know why I chose not to speak.

I lay on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. The pain inside me made my vision blur.

Camelia was asleep beside me. My hospital reports rested on her bedside table.

I pondered and slowly came to understand…. Perhaps it was because I had finally begun to see that Camelia did not love me as much as I had believed.

When Stan saw Camelia again, she had grown painfully thin. In such a short time, it was as though she had become a different person entirely. She became silent and withdrawn. Her eyes were empty, and her hands and movements were dull. She told him she had moved to another city. She had only returned this time to sort through Waylon’s belongings.Stan looked at her. In her eyes lay a cold stillness. He asked why she moved to another city, and she told him that every single moment in this city reminded her of Waylon.Stan heaved a sigh. “What about Grayson? Are you two together?”He used to live in the same neighborhood as Waylon and Camelia. After Waylon’s burial, Stan ran into Grayson a few times. He came looking for Camelia, but each time, he left in a fury.Camelia was silent for a moment. “He’s dead.”Stan was surprised when he heard that. “He's dead? How did he die?”She shook her head. “He died in a drunk-driving accident.”Then, she said no more. She clutched Waylon’s

I once asked Camelia why she could still stay with me while laughing and fooling around with Grayson. I also asked why she now wore such a revolting look of remorse. Her explanation, however, was laughable.“Waylon, I’m sorry. I thought the one I loved was Grayson. When he decided to return home for good, I couldn’t help getting close to him again.”She looked pained as she spoke.“But when I was with him, I couldn’t stop thinking about you. So, I kept telling myself that what I felt for Grayson was only the affection of an older sister for a younger brother. I was afraid you’d be upset and we’d fight, so I never dared tell you.“When I went to celebrate his birthday that day, I really planned to cut him off afterward. I just didn’t expect…”Before she could finish, her voice broke as she covered her face, collapsing into quiet despair.I gave her a cold stare. What was the point of love that came too late?“That’s enough. Stop pretending.”I ignored the shock on Camelia’s fac

Stan agreed almost immediately. It was not for my savings but because he genuinely felt sorry for me.“What do you need me to do?” Stan asked.“Just help with my burial. Bury me next to my mom.”I handed him a slip of paper. Written on it was an address: [46 Heaven’s Path.]That was the cemetery where my mother rested.Grayson came to see me later. He stared down at me, frail and barely clinging to life in the hospital bed. Triumph was written all over his face.“So, you’re really about to die? I was even thinking of inviting you to Camelia's and my wedding.”I quietly stared at him like I was watching a clown make a fool of himself.Sure enough, my gaze irritated him.“You think Camelia’s going to stay faithful to you after you die? Dream on! Look at you. You’re pathetic. You were never worthy of her!”I smiled after he finished saying those words.Camelia was standing at the doorway, and she heard every word Grayson said. She had gone to get me some water. Clearly, she had

I nodded indifferently. Camelia, on the other hand, clearly could not accept it. Her voice trembled as she asked, “Isn’t there any way to extend his life?”The doctor shook his head and glanced at me with a trace of pity.“His condition is too severe. It’s late-stage cancer. Even if you could find a miracle doctor, there’d be nothing he could do. The family should start preparing for the end.”Then, he left with the nurse, leaving only Camelia and me behind.I idly scrolled through the latest news on my phone.Camelia sat beside me, covering her face. Tears slipped silently through the gaps between her fingers. Then, I heard her whispering over and over again, apologizing in a low voice.“I’m sorry, Waylon… I’m sorry. Please don’t leave me…”I felt nothing stir inside me. From the moment I decided to leave her, I had never planned on forgiving Camelia. The woman who had once said she loved me more than anything only came to her senses after deceiving me. It was laughable.I s

Sure enough…I let out a soft chuckle. “You two look quite in love. In that case, I’ll step aside and make room for him.”Before she could respond, I hung up the phone. I pulled out my suitcase and began packing. Soon, the phone rang again and again as though it would not stop until I answered.I switched it to airplane mode, coldly and decisively, and continued packing in silence. Yet, a sense of emptiness crept into my heart. If I died, what would Camelia feel when she thought of me? Would she suffer the way I did? Or would she breathe a sigh of relief because she could at last be with Grayson openly? The thought shattered what little composure I had left.I slammed my fist down onto the suitcase. In no time, dark bruises bloomed across my hand.I tore the diagnosis report into pieces. White scraps of paper fluttered down from the air as though they were mocking my loneliness and disgrace. It felt as though an invisible hand had wrapped tightly around my heart, squeezing it un

  • The One Before Everyone Else   Chapter 4

Today was the day I went to visit my mother.I brought some candles and also held a bouquet of tulips. It was my mother's favorite flower when she was alive.Last night, I told Camelia that today was my mother’s death anniversary, hoping she would go with me. She immediately agreed. I had even set out her black outfit on a hanger, thinking she could just slip it on in the morning. However, after Camelia stepped out to take a call, she said there was an urgent matter at work that needed her attention when she came back.“Waylon, I’m sorry. This is really important.” Her voice held a hint of guilt along with her apology.I did not think much of it. These things had happened before, so I told her she did not need to come with me.After lighting the candles, I stood in front of the small tombstone, staring at the simple words that read out the name 'Polly Young'.“Mom, are you lonely down there? It’s okay if you are. I’ll be there with you soon.”I smiled. Ten years had passed, and
